2021 Yankees Season

It’s not a perfect stat, but I’ll trust it over biased human subjectivity every day.

Cole - ok

Judge - ok

Montgomery over Loaisiga? Flaw

Maybe the lasagna gets overly penalized in the math for his 3 very rough outings. But in the other 48, 4 of them he gave up 1 run, 44 he gave up 0. He has 9 wins and they’re not because he’s blown leads and the Yanks came back to win. It’s because he kept games close.

Maybe Holds just aren’t factored in very strongly. Even though we now live in a bullpen world (complete games are dead) the Hold stat just never really took off.

Judge and Cole continued to make their team MVP cases last night. It’s a great time to be alive.

WAR is one way of looking at it, but if the Yanks are only 12-10 in Cole’s starts how much more valuable is he than say Judge?
I’m not sure those are correct numbers, but I heard a stat that said Yanks were somewhere near .500 in his starts.

That's the problem with a stat like WAR, IMHO. It's for the talking heads and stats wonks. Again, I don't get to see a lot of games, so correct me if I'm wrong, but most of Cole's losses came during a stretch when the team didn't play well - base running gaffes, low production WRISP, injuries, etc. And during that same stretch Judge was one of the few Yankees who consistently performed at the plate. So assigning value to an individual player when the team results were poor is arbitrary: the team didn't play well regardless of either player's efforts. So, the whole of the WAR idea is arbitrary at best - how do you compare an actual player to one who exists only in theory?

Does it matter that Montgomery pitched almost twice as many innings?

There’s a reason Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens weren’t relievers. Starting pitchers are more valuable. There talents would have been wasted as relievers.

You mentioned two of the best, so I guess I could say there’s a reason Mariano Rivera was a reliever. He wouldn’t have been as good as a starter.

Bottom line I think lasagna has contributed to a lot of Yankee wins and they’d be a lot worse off without him. Certainly more than 2.2 games.

And the 60 extra innings Montgomery pitched are irrelevant?

Yes, they're irrelevant.

Sigh.

I'll just ask a simple question. Which one do you think has had a bigger impact on this team?

I’ll give the nod to the guy who pitched 60 more innings.

I do think they are two of the four most valuable players this season, as their WARs indicate.

I gave up and blocked that dude a long time ago.
