131 FBS teams x 85 scholarship players = 11,132 total players
3,085 transfers ÷ 11,132 total players = approx 28% of players transferred
Yeah, if I'm understanding this correctly, that's 23 guys per team. That can't possibly be right.
Just checking what I could find online for lists... 2 4 7 lists yearly transfer status and it looks like it's August through July. The following is for Syracuse. Note that not all players ended up anywhere else.
2022-23 Window - 10 so far, more to come before July I'm sure
2021-22 Window - 18 players
2020-21 Window - 16 players
Yeah, it's tracking both ways but I counted only outward going... yes, it does appear many enter the portal and end up in limbo. Sad.This is tracking both directions.
Is that part of those totals?
I’m too lazy to count.
Also - walk-ons are listed (in those instances when they have entered the portal)
So far, the portal has been an overwhelming net-positive for Cuse.
But, we’ll hafta see where we are after the bowl, and again after spring ball, to see how it actually sakes out in total for this year.
It’s scary how many athletes seem to have portaled out….
… into oblivion.
Good perspective, thanks for sharing. The “energy vampires” Saban alludes to were not created by the portal, but I’m sure it is exacerbated.
I agree with the sentiment. I think the concern many players have is similar to the NFL. If they get hurt in the game then they are much less attractive on a market where there is not much margin before these guys end up without a team.Interesting article. I like the term 'energy vampires.' So true.
But it's interesting to get some of Sabans thoughts on what's going on.
“The transfer portal has created a real challenge for all of us in terms of how to manage rosters,” Saban said. “Name image and likeness is something I think is great for the players if we can keep it in the context of them being able to do that. When you start using it to get guys to come to certain schools based on how much money they can make, I’m not sure — That’s the reason that you go to college is to create value for your future. So that’s going to trickle down to the high schools in terms of some guys are going to say ‘I’m not going to play for my team in high school because I’m going to get this much money to go somewhere and go to college.”
Side note but porta-ling and skipping the bowl games...I though about Courtney Jackson and Linton and these guys and giving up their opportunity to play in a bowl game. I don't know what I would do, if I would scrap my bowl game to move on after putting in the work all season. These are opportunities that don't come around often but I guess being young you don't recognize that. I think if I were to advise a player I'd tell him to wait until after the bowl game to make the move.

The other consideration is also driven by margins and decency bias. If you wait on the portal and comparable players jump in first then they have a greater chance at filling a slot that could have been a fit for you. I think this second consideration is the most important for why kids jump in the portal immediately. It’s a game of musical chairs right now because the window is so long.
Saban doesn't like it because it doesn't create an advantage for Bama.
It’s a problem for him because the transfer rules mean he can’t lock up 5 stars. Kids want to playSaban saying it's an issue should be an eye opener, because he's saying it from a position of strength. His school will NEVER be out bid. My interpretation of his comments is that the roster management is the real problem and if it's a problem for Bama think about it from the Syracuse perspective.

Uhhhh
His school WAS outbid. He was complaining about A&M this offseason
No, you're mistaken. Here's the quote by SabanNo his larger gripe is roster management and he’s right. He had 12 scholarship players a out. It’s an issue.
We had 3 dbs and people wondered if we could field a secondary.
And if Bama really really wants a player they won’t be outbid. They’ll find a way, let’s be real.
I feel real bad for Saban and Bama.....NOT !!!!Interesting article. I like the term 'energy vampires.' So true.
