2022 Coaching Carousel

Hiring Martin could really help UMASS possibly getting an invitation to the Big East as they look to expand before their new media contract.
Just be happy the Cage could return.

If the Big East expands Dayton, Davidson, St. Louis, Richmond would be ahead of UMass ceiling is the American when that conference lost 4 teams it didn’t even get considered.

I've read they are looking at UMASS in the east and Dayton and St Louis in the west.

Where did you read that? Please post would be interested in reading.

It's been kicked around on the Boneyard and UMASS hoops board. UCONN and UMASS have some new understanding that they have mutual interests and they like their new found rivalries in football and soccer and think a basketball rivalry would be good too,.

Why would UMASS settle for the Big East when the Big Ten should be begging for them any day?
I'm not going to talk about this anymore on this thread about coaching hires.

I appreciate my good friend CousCuse's passion for UMass athletics but this is your monthly reminder UMass fans/alums hopes are much more in line with with is plausible right now.

That said, Frank Martin's ceiling at UMass is very high and for the first time since I've been there I have reasons to be excited about their athletics outside of the hockey team. Fingers crossed that good Syracuse news starts to pile up on top of it after Jesse last night.

Frank Martin is a P5 hire who could have gotten a job in a P5 conference. He probably would be looked for the Syracuse job when it opens. I think his taking the UMASS job portends other things going on behind the scenes. If they did get a NBE invite, he is probably promised a sizable salary increase.

Frank Martin at Syracuse !!
Good one. LOL.

Listen good for UMass but Frank Martin took a job like Archie Miller looking to rehab his career in a league he can get an at-large bid out of if he has a good enough year.

Martin was at South Carolina 10 years and made the NCAAT one time.
He wasn’t getting another P5 job.
He got about the best job he could without sitting out.

Martin has that 1 Final Four from his 1 tournament bid in 10 years. He was 20 games under .500 in SEC play.

I think Rhode Island hiring Archie Miller was a better hire. I do think Martin deserved another chance and good luck at UMass but he isn’t close to a guy who could get the Syracuse job.

Obviously I'm biased but I think Martin is a better hire than Archie. Dayton is one of the "easiest" mid-majors to win at and he did nothing at a borderline blue blood with plenty of in-state talent. Martin has New England ties from his assistant coaching days and AAU programs like BABC were tweeting his support earlier this week.

Of course this is college basketball so URI could be awesome and UMass could still stink in a couple years but right now I don't think they could have gotten a better coach. Kids seem to love playing for Martin.

Very reasonable take.
I think both made good hires.
A-10 is good enough to get multiple at-larges every year.
Dayton, Richmond, VCU, Davidson, URI, Bonnies, UMass, Philly schools.

Good midmajor.

South Carolina has to be about the worst job in the SEC. He had a lot of good years there and was 9-9 in league this year. He also did well at K-state, one of the worst jobs in the Big12. Borh of those programs don't have any of things that a coach can lean on, and they are up against powers.

I can understand your thoughts about SC to some degree but not K-State. They have a great fanbase, very good facilities and a history of good basketball although not in recent years.

K-State isn't terrible, their just on the bottom rungs in the Big12.

I highly doubt the Big East is expanding anytime soon.

K-State is a backwater if there ever was one.

Good for Colgate. For a long time it appeared they had no interest in being good at sports. Looks like that is changing. I hope Matt stays there the length of the contract and continues to win.
