2022 World Cup

Let me talk a little more about the bracket.

I think the Netherlands is vulnerable, and not just because of the flu that is going through their squad. They missed the last 2 major tournaments. Louis Van Gaal is a conservative coach, and he has been battling cancer, with something like 25 chemo treatments this year. They have 2 quality attacking players, but they have a new goalkeeper and not a super athletic midfield, although they are good technically.

I think if our midfield still has the legs, and if Berhalter gets Gio Reyna into the game for more than just a cameo, we can win this game. But if we don't beat Netherlands, surely Argentina will. To me, the Netherlands is like this tournament's Belgium.

On the other side of our bracket, I would call Japan v. Croatia a toss up. Japan is playing their best ever, pretty much, beating Spain and Germany in the Group. They have a Bundesliga side, for the most part, with a handful of Premier League defenders thrown in. Croatia has strength in the midfield, in particular, although Luka Modric is getting up there in age.

It's hard to see Son and the Hwangs carrying South Korea past Brazil. Most of Korea's defenders play in the Japanese League. 3 or 4 of their midfielders and attackers play in Europe, but mostly not at the big clubs. Even without Neymar, Brazil has too much talent all over the pitch not to advance. Brazil should beat either Japan or Croatia in the Quarterfinals to get through to the Semifinals.

That would mean Argentina v. Brazil in the Semifinal from our side of the bracket.

Among the other 8 teams on the bottom of the draw:

Spain should beat Morocco, Portugal should beat Switzerland, England should beat Senegal, and France should beat Poland. France rested their whole squad in the 3rd Group game (which they lost with their reserves ...). When they did this in 1998, they went all the way and won the Final. Robert Lewandowski can create chances out of nothing, but he's not even getting touches, let alone service from the Poland squad. I see something like 3-1, France.

Out of the 4 name teams in this side of the bracket, I think England is most vulnerable to Senegal, even without Sadio Mane. They will be athletic. Edou Mendy is a shot stopper in goal. Koulibaly has had a good tournament for them in defense. They won the Africa Cup of Nations. If there's an upset, that will be the one. Otherwise, it's quarterfinals of Spain v. Portugal and France v. England / Senegal.

Semifinals, Spain should be favored over Portugal, and France is probably going to beat England, unless some sort of internal chemistry problems derail them.

So that would be Spain v. France and Argentina v. Brazil. That would be epic. Of course, if England snuck past France into the Semi's vs. Spain, that would be probably get record-setting ratings in the US.

I also have a hard time seeing us get past Argentina. They not only have Messi, they also have Champions League standouts like Darwin Nunez of Liverpool, Angel DiMaria, Paulo Dybala and Lautaro Martinez in attack.

Their central and holding midfield is not quite so full of stars, but they play hard and physical, and employ the tactical foul. Emiliano Martinez is excellent in goal, and they have a lot of defenders who play regularly in Spain, England and Italy.

Argentina is a hell of a team. I think they might win it all. It's interesting that the bracket is set up for Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to potentially meet in the Final. That would be something, wouldn't it?

And like Argentina, Portugal has a lot more talent in their team than just their talisman.
Nunez is from and plays for Uruguay

Liking Switzerland over Portugal

I don't think they have enough goals in their side. Embolo is good, but Shaqiri doesn't strike me as a guy who is going to get enough big goals to carry a team deep in a tournament. They have some talent in midfield (Xhaka, Vargas, Jashari, Zakari, Fassnacht), and in defense (Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez), but I think Portugal has a better team.

Take Ronaldo out of it. They still have Joao Felix, Bruno Fernandez, Bernardo Silva and Rafael Leao in attack, along with William Carvalho, Ruben Neves and Joao Mario in central / holding midfield. On defense, Pepe looks 100 years old, and really shouldn't start any more games for them, absent injury. They have Ruben Diaz from Man City, Dalot and Cancelo at the fullbacks, and 3 excellent goaltenders.

I like Portugal. If Spain weren't playing so well right now, I think that at another moment in time Portugal could knock them off.

Groups of 3. How dumb. Any system in which MOST in a group advance is dumb.

Yes, if 2/3 of the teams advance anyway, why play the group at all?
Seed the Top 16 teams. Have a play-in game between the remaining 32 teams, with the 16 winners meeting the 16 seeded teams in a round of 32, and go single elimination for 5 rounds until you have a champion. Waay more drama if the entire tournament is knock-out format.

Louis Van Gaal on Saturday's opponent:

Despite, the Netherlands' pedigree as a three-time World Cup finalist, van Gaal was adamant his group would not be taking the Americans lightly.

"The USA has demonstrated that it has an excellent team, I would even say one of the best teams," he said. "A team that is fine-tuned, a very tough match. I am not going to downplay the USA. I think they are an example of what a good team is supposed to be."

Very nice words from a legendary coach, reaching his twilight years. Thank you, sir. I hope we live up to it.

I'm getting way too amped up for late at night, but a lot of the foreign press is giving us a solid chance to beat the Netherlands tomorrow morning. We are kind of a darling upset pick, and people all over the world have noticed the performance of our midfield. Now, only if we can find a couple goals!

I like Spain a lot but once you get down to the last 8 teams, I think especially this year. At least 6 have a solid chance of winning it all. There’s a handful of very good teams. I just don’t want to see Ronaldo, can’t stand that guy and all his antics. You can’t play defense on the guy anywhere near the box b/c he’s just going to fall down and draw a foul.

Watching us be able to control play, hold on to the ball and have numerous scoring chances against England told me we really have been improving US soccer. It was very rare in the past against top level opponents we could do any of those things through an entire game. I’m excited for the future in general and I think we can beat Netherlands and not just a pipe dream feeling.

Today's starters...

Going with Jesus instead of Reyna. Prayers.

Seriously though.. Ferreira is a better option than Wright.

Aaronson will be one of the first ones off the bench. Hopefully Gio too.

Sargent is out, so we have 25 today.

I don’t what the deal is and it’s prob been debated a million times on here but IMO Reyna is our best crosser and free/corner kick person. An area we’ve done poorly in so far this tournament.

Surprised he's going with Pulisic to start. Figured put Reyna in for Pulisic to start, bring him and Aaronson on as super subs - one around 55 minute mark, the other around 60 minute mark.

Also, thought CCV should get the nod, hopefully Zim stays steady.

Real opportunity for MLS guys to show out against a bunch of euro players.

We look smaller but faster as a team.
