2023-24 Portal Options

I’m not 100% confident on any of this. But I get the hunch that Judah goes through and tests the NBA waters but ultimately comes back for one more season. Jesse comes back. They fell Girard thanks for the last 4 years. Symir leaves. Bell transfers.

I think we have a starting line up of:

Mintz
Starling
Benny
Brown
Jesse

Copeland is the 3rd guard
Taylor comes in as a 2/3 wherever needed
Hima is the back up to Jesse
Carey doesn’t get much time but he’s still there

Then I think you go hard after 2 forwards in the portal. They don’t need to be studs but solid role players and potentially future starters in a season or 2. And then possibly go hard after a legit back up center if you can get one.

Realistically you pull that off and you have a top 15 team next year, if Autry can coach and develop even a lick lol

This is best case scenario. I think Bell posted something positive recently. Also the comments about Jesses girlfriend are very interesting. Was at senior game and the 03 celebration and I thought for sure he was done in CNY but maybe not.

Don’t forget 7’2 Patterson, doesn’t matter if he can’t shoot or dribble. He can eat up space with all that Tall.

You nailed it tho. Need some physical guys at the forward position. Basically length and rebounding then mopping up behind Judah and JJ driving is all we should need for offense

As frustrating as it is with the transfer portal, it is a great resource to turn around the program quickly. However, you need to have competent coaching on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. I think the best way to defend in today’s basketball is to have pressure defense and length. Just look at the athletes Alabama has all over the court.

The zone provided way too many open shots, and teams have three or four great shooters now. I hope we never see our center having to rush out to the three-point line to guard a wide open shooter

just gonna put this out there:

I think getting Dong and and maybe even Akok (portaling??) would be a great way to make up for the loss of Ajok.
Cracking Up Lol GIF

Disagree here with one thing.

You need a stud forward - or at least somebody better - to play opposite Benny. Not sure Brown is good enough now.

It’s an improved team, especially on D and athletically.

But we need shooters. I’d expect Judah/JJ to improve, Benny if he stays to be a solid 35%ish but then what? Does Bell come back and still get major minutes? Is Taylor any good? Copeland and Brown would be two non-threats, so that’ll hurt.

If we’re going to have two stud driving guards, you HAVE to put shooters out there too.

I think JJ specifically will make a huge jump. Like Judah, his jumper isn’t broken whatsoever so the issues with the shot not falling as consistently as you’d like could definitely be cleaned up with an off-season of work. I think Judah and JJ would be a very respectable backcourt from a shooting perspective assuming both put the work in this summer.

It’s an amazing movie. I watch it a few times a year. It’s on Netflix right now.
It's my go to Halloween movie recommendation.

Also, people forget how good Tom Hanks was when he did comedy.

The part at the end when he slides down the stairs makes me laugh every time.

I think it will be interesting to see if we start 3 guards vs our traditional 2 guards. Most of the rest of college basketball as moved to a 3-guard rotation and starting lineup. Just looking at the teams in the top 10 right now, and based upon what ESPN has each player labeled as:
Houston starts 3 guards and 2 forwards
Purdue starts 3 guards a forward and a center
Kansas starts 3 guards and 2 forwards
Texas starts 3 guards and 2 forwards
Marq starts 3 guards and 2 forwards
UCLA starts 4 guards and 1 forward
Arizona starts 3 guards and 2 forwards
Gonzaga starts 3 guards and 2 forwards
Uconn starts 3 guards and 2 forwards
The only team in the top 10 that starts 2 guards is Alabama. The start 2 guards, 2 forwards and a center... But one of those forwards is the best player in college basketball and also made 15 more 3s and JG3 did this year...

If JG3 and Mintz both come back, I would think there is still room in the starting lineup for JJ.

JJ and Trey Autry are friends right? He knows Red on a personal level?

Played on the City Rocks together.
Thanks. Just found a .com article quoting JJ in 2021 during his initial recruitment: Former Baldwinsville star JJ Starling has entered transfer portal: Could Syracuse be his destination?

“Coach Autry, Trey, that’s like family, that’s like my brother. We’ve been close since third grade. Met at a basketball camp at Syracuse. And then we played AAU against each other and with each other, so yeah, Syracuse is always going to be on my mind.”

Gotta be a lock.

Elijah-Hutchins-Everett just entered the portal. Was OVC freshman of the year. Averaged 11.5 points and 5.5 rebounds. Had SU offer.
Listed at 6’11” and 255lbs.

Pass - he doesn't have good hands, lacks athleticism and not much of an improvement over what we already have.

He put up 19 and 7 vs Purdue alongside a number of big games. Biggest question mark I see is rebounding

Haven't seen a film from this season but is freshman year film looks solid to me. Especially compared with most true frosh bigs. He's got some back to the basket moves, a little hook/jump hook and is a big physical presence. I can see some Arinze in this kid.

So why did he go ND in the first place again? Was it Dior?
