2023 Spring Game Friday April 21st

Tommy DeVito proved to me, you can't just go off practice and a golden arm. Need to see Justin perform in live action, versus a real opponent. Can he hold up physically, and will the game speed not be too quick for him, still need to be answered. Fingers crossed though.
I agree totally. Sadly if he proves it then Garrett is hurt and I ain’t ready yet but we should get Lamson in early and a lot in easy games. Shouldn’t be running Garrett and all starters deep into second half agains Wagner either again.

Totally agree, get the bkup QB some meaningful touches vs. Colgate and hopefully Western MI. Will likely pay dividends down the brutal part of the schedule.

What about Delaine? Wasn't he supposed to be a pretty big recruit?

I'm nervous as can be about our CB's. Hoping we can move 1 of our safeties over to CB. Secondary is thin and Dline is deep. It's like bizzaro world.
Dont know much about Delanie. Everyone develops at different rates. Every team has groups that are more experienced than others. We will see how the corner's develop but right now they are thin like you said.

This is where the DL and LB's stepping up and playing like we think they can would help give those DB's some time to develop and hide some of their flaws.

Stuff the run game and force some 3rd and longs. Make that QB throw in fear.
Great points

We actually talked about this same thing last year. I said he has a way of dropping balls to receivers that they don’t have to slowdown for. I said the 2 td were a great pic of what I meant and I believe u said u didn’t see enough of him yet or he hasn’t shown enough. I forget.
I think Lamson is the favorite to win the back up spot but its very close. I see things that I like in him but I also consider what I am evaluating him against. It seems like some are exagerrating his performances. I dont really see him throwing guys open that were covered. Both QB's had similar days. Carlos just got off to a slower start. Maybe Im not seeing things that you see. Thats why I asked for your insight.

Carlos’ wheels are going to cause big problems.

Our D didn’t have to account for that at the spring game because we had an extra DB due to scheme and we were playing touch. Carlos also had the B squad OL for the most part.

Im still higher on CDRW to be honest

Yup two of Carlos drives got destroyed because of Kauhi

Whichever way it goes, I'm just thrilled that we're talking about backup QBs that aren't short on tools. Feels like we often turn to a walkon or a stretch offer guy. Both CD-RW and Lamson have legit skills and athletic ability and you can see the starter potential in them.

Both these kids are just levels above what we’re used to. We’re still a ways away from having what we need in the QB room to be a top 25 program. Beck will get us there though I hope

I think Carlos as u know has a way better arm but he seems to throw it a bit like TD on a rope and hard always. He can run well and he is big. I just see Lamson as a better thrower. I think he throws guys open more than Carlos does anyways. Obviously he doesn’t like nfl guys do but better than we have had previously. His mechanics are right about where they need to be and it’s a feel I have about him. As another poster pointed out that he has to prove it in games when he is gonna get smacked. I think he could be a great backup and hopefully a starter next year if he proves himself.

Carlos showed great touch on his TD passes Friday. I like Lamson's mechanics better as well but that doesnt make him a better QB alone. Carlos also went against the #22 and #23 defenses in the country. Weve seen Lamson go mostly against back up teammates (w/ vanilla looks) There is no way I can determine how much better he is than Carlos at this point.

Agreed. I don't think we will really know anything about Lamson until we see him against live competition, facing a real rush and more complex coverage schemes. Until then, his decision making, poise in the pocket, and accuracy (for the most part) look promising.

I think because we like his potential we tend to enhance his performances. The offense ran mostly quick game 1 read routes. Mostly in's, seams with an occasional curl and vertical route. 1 run play ( split zone).

Yup. We need to consistently add QB talent each and every cycle. The same goes for the OL room - still looks alarming like the weakest link.

For sure. Next to nothing should be concluded based on the Spring game. That was by design.

Anyone that can comment on how the event went after the football ended? We headed out right away. And my now almost 14 year old was too cool to go down anyway.

Great post, we didn’t have that luxury last year between the injuries and the DL being so green

I've been to a lot of spring games. In fact most. This was among the drabbest for me personally. Couple the fact that my son didn't want to hang out after the scrimmage, with the fact that they did not have an "on-field" event afterward, and we were left with the usual half-ass type scrimmage, which I totally understand.

I took the time that I was there to look around at the rest of the room. I saw a lot of things that in 2023 are not proper to make fun of so I wont.

But that building? I gotta say, we are some lucky SOB's. I have always loved that facility, and never ever thought it would be what it is today. What a glorious place to spend an otherwise dull evening.
