2024 New York Mets Thread

"And in the middle of it all was Francisco Lindor, once again making the improbable feel inevitable.

“Everyone in the building,” president of baseball operations David Stearns said, “knew what was going to happen there.” He paused. “And to do it, is just absurd.”

"Every October legend needs a legendary October moment. For Francisco Lindor, this was that moment.

It’s amazing to try to comprehend what one swing of the bat can do — the stories it can write, the memories it can make, the reputations it can seal. But we saw all of that happen Wednesday night at Citi Field. We saw Lindor send a baseball floating through the Queens sky. And when it came down, nothing would be the same."

Actually, we were going to blow that game - and the series, having to go back to Philly and face Zach Wheeler. We had several opportunities to jump out to a lead and also an opportunity to extend it but couldn't get the big hit. Then we started to blow it in the 8th. But Lindor hit a grand slam and so we didn't blow it.

"Because think back to a few months ago. For so long, the narrative around the Mets’ longtime nucleus told a story of underachieving losers. It persisted with such intensity in late May that Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns fielded several questions during a news conference over whether the core was any good at all, worth building in, worth believing in.

Consider the questions answered, the narrative flipped on its head."

And remember that this was supposed to be a throw-away season, building for 2025 or 2026. The Met's brass denied that but nobody believed them.

I wish I was cultured enough to have some idea what this means.

The first is abstract art, like a fastball with movement.

The second is pointillism, "a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image", like a pitcher throwing to spots.

baseball it's a game of subtle strategy. of knowing your strengths and weaknesses and forcing your opponent into a mistake based on false signals. knowing when to hold em and when...

Bring on the Dodgers! Given the starting pitching is far less scary with this years group feels like a very winnable series.

Brewers fans still a little testy about how the playoffs went - the Lakeshore Chinooks are running a Jesse Winker special with $1.99 tickets next summer in honor of Winker’s .199 with the Brewers.

The Dodgers are playing well and I think are the most talented team in MLB.

That said, there are no easy outs this time of year.

Bring ‘em on!

Let’s go Mets!

MLB is thrilled they are guaranteed either New York or LA in the World Series. They’ll be dancing and celebration in the league offices if the Yankees advance also.

Apparently, according to David Samson - there isn’t much difference between Yankees-Dodgers and Yankees-Mets as far as anticipated ratings.

Neither are we!

Based on analytics, the Mets expected record last year was 80-82 - basically a .500 team. If they are only as good as last year, a winning record is possible. My only concern is if they are slightly outperforming expectations and could make the playoffs at the trade deadline - I’d rather not see them mortgage the future trading to try to make a one-shot postseason run next year. Issue in NY is a “win now” media will push for that.

I’m hoping 1983 is a good analogue for this season - a year to develop a bunch of young players leading to a long competitive run starting in 2025.

I wanted to revisit this comment - I think Sterns handled the trade deadline fantastically. Mets added a few pieces that have helped, but really didn’t impact any long term plans to bolster this years squad. Regardless how this year plays out, I think the Mets finally have the leadership to be able to sustain success - the future is bright!

"Lately, the World Series has mostly taken place elsewhere: 80 of the last 83 games have been staged outside of New York, dating to the Yankees’ last championship in 2009. The Mets reached the World Series in 2015, but the Yankees have dropped their last five appearances in the ALCS, three with Judge as their centerpiece."

"The Mets advanced to the National League Championship Series for the first time since 2015, and they will enjoy three days off their feet before beginning that best-of-seven in Southern California — latitude TBD — on Sunday. That gives New York plenty of time to ponder how best to shape its roster for a showdown with either the Dodgers or Padres."

“Right now it hurts pretty good,” Nimmo said after going 0-for-3 Sunday. He was pinch hit for in the ninth inning. “The second-to-last game against Philadelphia, I did something on the field and made it quite a bit worse. … When it gets inflamed and flares up, it’s a harder thing to calm down.”

The Dodgers may not have advanced to face the Mets in the National League Championship Series without Ohtani’s three-run shot against San Diego in Game 1. The homer revived the club after Yamamoto spotted San Diego an early lead. During the next four games, San Diego kept him from smashing balls over the fence and causing havoc on the bases. Ohtani went 2-for-15 with eight strikeouts after Game 1.

The Dodgers have the hitters to eventually crack Sean Manaea and the Mets’ staff, and with Jack Flaherty, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and a bullpen used to heavy lifting they’ll be able to tame the Mets’ lineup just enough in the NLCS.

The storylines would be endless. The hype would be, too. You might hate New York — hey, it’s not for everyone — but if you look away from this World Series, you’d be missing out on a whole lot of fun.

Manaea against the Dodger bullpen today. Sean has been very good in clutch situations. We need him now more than ever.

Man this is a resilient bunch. After getting absolutely hammered yesterday they come out, completely unphased, and put up a quick 6 run lead on the Dodgers. Vientos with the huge grand slam and the Mets head to NY with a split in LA. Let’s go Mets!

I hate games where we get an early lead and stop scoring, hoping the bullpen can hold the lead. It's like being operated on without an anesthetic.

But we finally got that extra run. Kudos to the Polar Bear for stealing a base, then scoring from second on a shallow hit to right center. He can move when he has to. Also to a hobbled Brandon Nimmo making a running catch in left near the warning track in the 8th. (But should Nimmo be out there when you are protecting a lead in the late innings?)

Then Diaz, of course, puts two guys on. But he closed it down and we go back to New York with a split. Now it's three games in New York. Maybe we won't even have to go back to LA. :)

In 1959, the Chicago White Sox beat the Dodgers 11-0 in game 1 of the World Series. The Dodgers won four of the next five to win the series.

IN 1982, the Brewers beat the Cardinals 10-0 in the first game. The Cards won in 7.

For us old timers on here… could the snake in the Dodgers dugout be reminiscent of the 1969 black cat against the Cubs during the pennant race? It was good luck for the Mets then let’s hope for the same 55 years later with the snake. lol.

The Mets have scored in 3 of 27 innings so far, 11%. The Dodgers have scored in 10 of 26 innings, 38%.

I give the Mets huge amounts of credit for getting as far as they have but it would be nice if they were so bad when the opposing pitcher spins the ball.

At this point I'm not sure I would play JD and Alvy... they are both in DEEP DEEP slumps.

We're getting whomped, 9-30 in total runs and 2-18 in our own park. We just aren't good enough to beat this team. I chose to look at it like it was an NCAA basketball tournament. It's 12 teams instead of 68, so this is kind of like making the elite 8. Pretty good, especially since this was supposed to be a 'throw away' season after we'd gotten rid of some super star contracts and were rebuilding with young players. I am concerned that we had some starting pitchers who had 'career' years and won't be able to duplicate them.

I know he's great but after the homer they were pitching to Ohtani like he was Kelly Leak with Ogilvie on deck - problem is it's Mookie Betts who is on a heater.

Walks in general killing the Mets.
