2024 New York Mets Thread

I feel like we are playing with house money now. I like our chances against Philly. Ya gotta believe! Let’s go Mets!

In my 20s, I had a couple of relationships that deep down I knew were going to end badly and leave some scars (dating girls with eyebrow rings was a clue what direction things were headed) - but were really, really fun in the moment. I’ve felt for months like this Mets season is a lot like that as a fan - although it worries me I’m starting to think “maybe this is the one time when you knew something would end badly that it won’t”.

I blame Pete - when he came up I figured there were only two possible outcomes to that at bat - he hit a HR to launch the team into the next round, or hit into a DP to end the season and likely his career as a Met. I was hoping like hell it’d be the HR - but if I’m honest, I expected a weak double play ball. And here we are… LFGM

Citi field is going to be rocking for Game 3. Last time they were home was against the Phillies, which feels like an eternity ago. But for now, time to continue breaking opposing fans’ hearts on the road. LGM!

Senga starting Game 1. That wasn’t even on my radar as a possibility. Love his moxie and confidence but I hope there isn’t a lot of rust to shake off. Really want to take Game 1 to play from ahead with the Phillies rather than playing catch up.

Once upon a time a pitcher pitching like Wheeler was would complete the game. They always worry about the tiring starter and compare him to when he was fresh. the comparison is to what you might get when you go to your bullpen.

Excellent start to the series. Senga had a short outing but that isn’t surprising. He didn’t pitch all that badly. Win the next game and the pressure is really on Philly.

True…but all the metrics say pulling the starter after @100 pitches is the right decision, especially in this day and age, where bullpens are much, much better than they were in the 80s/90s.

Baseball is never, ever, ever going back to starters pitching complete games with any regularity. If your fresh bullpen arms aren’t better than a starter north of 100 pitches - you built a terrible team and don’t deserve to win. And even when you’ve built a great bullpen (like the Brewers) - weird things happen in the very small sample size of playoffs and your lights out closer will give up a game losing HR. Like what happened to the Brewers this year, and to the As in 1988 when they were pitching the second best closer of all time. And blowing a game happened to the best closer of all time in 2001.

PS - Was leaving Harvey in back in 2015 the right call? Or is it closer to reality that we only know it wasn’t because he blew the lead, not fresh bullpen guys?

"These franchises, relative neighbors in the National League for 63 seasons, are meeting in the playoffs for the first time Saturday in the opener of a best-of-five Division Series in Philadelphia. Soon we will know who wins “the damn thing” — as an exasperated Bob Murphy once said, after the Mets nearly blew a nine-run lead in Philly — and who must cope with the shame of defeat."

This has turned into quite an exciting game from the perspective of an impartial observer

Indeed. The series is shaping up as a high scoring series with lots of ups and downs. Reminds me a bit of the 1969 playoff series between the Braves and the Mets.

Let’s hope the Mets can prevail in the end.

Tough way to lose but I’m feeling pretty good about this team. I think the hitters finally have a winning, never say die mindset. It’s been years since I’ve seen this mental fortitude from them. The starting pitching has been unbelievable as well. I think this series goes five and will come down to which team’s bullpen can outlast the other.

Two teams with deep line-ups who can have a big inning at any time. It ain't over 'til it's over.

"It’s tough not to compare the two New York stadiums when both opened in the same year, and there are pros and cons in favor of both. The Citi Field crowd is closer than at Yankee Stadium, and although there was a certain history and charm to the old Shea Stadium, the new place is just so much nicer. If the crowd at the Mets’ watch party at Citi Field for Pete Alonso’s homer against the Brewers is any indication of what it’s going to be like for a real game, Citi Field is going to be a madhouse for Game 3 against the Phillies."

I doubt any of these authors have ever seen a playoff game at CitiField.

Their eyes will be opened tonight.

Did I just hear play-by-play man Adam Amin marvel at Starling Marte's 35 year old arm when Tyrone Taylor made the throw and then say that Alec Bohm "is now 2 for 35" when he was tagged out trying to stretch a single into a double?

Now they have it at 7-0 when it's 6-0.
