2027 Recruiting

I’m not sure who Cuse is targeting, but as a data point the following five stars that have been announced by IL follow Cuse on IG:

1. Holbrough - perfetti also commented on his IL post, which James liked so we have a real shot there I feel
2. Sobel
3. Asaro

JT Cross does not, while Woods does fwiw

Pretty remarkable how few Long Island kids were featured by Inside Lacrosse in the class of 2027. Team 91, Express, Shore 2 Shore, Legacy all still with really strong programs. I think they are probably hurt by the lack of reclassing.

I don't know about all of the five star kids, but it's telling they pretty much all go to private/prep schools (I know Holbrough's a reclass), and Canadian kids like Matthews and Woods are going to be 20 during their freshman seasons in college.

One local name I’m looking at is FO middie Julien Watts. A Watertown native who played as an 8th & 9th grader at South Jefferson, Watts reclassed to ‘27 & is entering his 2nd year at reigning IL National HS Champion Loomis Chaffee. Named a 4 star by IL yesterday, Watts plays club for Hilltop & Orange Crush. He took nearly every FO for the Haudenosaunee U-20 team as one of the youngest players in the tourney at 17. His sister plays at Albany & his brother attends Cornell. Also plays box for the Jr. Knighthawks.

With FO mid being a priority in the ‘27 class & the Promise Scholly in play, “Juice” Watts is a name to keep an eye on.

Today’s recruiting is so different than 10-20 yrs ago. Preps get the automatic bumps. Plenty of normal HS kids will get recruited but just won’t have stars. Plus many kids haven’t even been evaluated based on where they play. The kids that can play will be found.

Hearing SU will definitely be targeting Woods and Marachek. Woods will be tough as NYC noted previously he will have a large amount of suitors. Expect most of the usual suspects to be involved especially UNC and UVA. Spallina I think will depend on a few factors. he's a good player but I suspect he's likely a plan B guy. Couple of other NY guys SU will be targeting as well.
i heard woods is a high academic kid. i still would expect cuse to be in the mix for a canadian from culver but just something to keep in mind...

ayden matthews of course has a brother at penn state so it would be an upset if he goes anywhere else...

sobel has been rumored to maryland for months

Good point, could be IVY bound.

Did JT Cross’s dad go to Notre Dame? Feels like if that’s the case they would be front runners for his services.

Bingo. The recruiting media basically follow the prep school beat, and are pretty clueless about public school kids. From my neck of woods, a Darien middie that didn't see any time this year was rated a 3 star, while a teammate who started at midfield and is on the same club team was not rated. Who do you think has a better beat on these kids: the coaches who see them every day or the recruiting analyst who saw 1 or 2 games their club team played over the summer?

Generally speaking, I think these rankings weight club ball WAY too highly. And the less said about the blind eye they turn to significant holdbacks the better.

Class of 27 5 Stars that Follow Syracuse Lacrosse on Instagram, a good start to overanalysis

This does not mean we are in on everyone on this list, or out on anyone not

Anthony Asaro M Garden City

Moe Sobel G IMG (From South Jersey), wants to Study Sports management according to his recruit profile, which we have a good program for, so could be a positive.

Bodhi Harmon G Culver (from Colorado)

James Holbrough A Berkshire (From Rochester Area)

Ayden Matthews M Lawrenceville (From Ontario) plays for Orangeville in OJLL, so lots of Cuse connections there

Teddy Oh G Taft (From California)

Cole Stankavage A Ardrey Kell (Charlotte NC Area for those who don't know)

Riley Woods A Culver (from Ontario) seems like a big Academic Guy

Maybes
Nick Lagunowich A Chatham and Luke St Pierre D Lawrenceville (from dont follow Cuse Lax, but do follow Steve Angeli, just a fin little trivia fact

John Lynch M Belmont Hill and Conor Morsell A Haverford are on private

will probably do this again with 4 stars later, but I'm not staying up that late tonight to do it, cuz I need to trravel with the band to atlanta for saturday.

1. James Holbrough, A, Berkshire School (MA)
2. JT Cross, A, Valor Christian (CO)
3. Riley Woods, A, Culver (IN)
4. Brandon Fodor, M, Delbarton (NJ)
5. Ayden Matthews, M, Lawrenceville (NJ)
6. Anthony Asaro, M, Garden City (NY)
7. Moe Sobel, G, IMG (FL)
8. Teddy Oh, G, Taft (CT)
9. Conor Morsell, A, Haverford (PA)
10. John Lynch, M, Belmont Hill (MA)

I noticed that midfielder Adrian Sweeney from Cicero North is ranked 100. Midfielder Lee Warren from Guilderland, NY (near Albany but he's part of Sweetlax Upstate) is ranked 82. Defender Jason Cunningham from Hilton, NY near Buffalo (also where Braydon Pike went to high school), also part of Sweetlax Upstate is ranked 42. Midfielder Grady Goodberlet from Honeoye Falls-Lima near Rochester, also part of Sweetlax is ranked 34. Attackman Cole Stankavage is from North Carolina but is part of Sweetlax Upstate, he's ranked 16 and is a five star (and like Hawknate pointed out, follows SU on instagram).

Hilton is a Rochester suburb.

I'd definitely keep an eye on Warren, believe there is significant mutual interest. SU has had mixed success in Rochester but I expect them to be on Cunningham and Goodberlet, though I suspect Maryland will be sniffing around there as well. I don't put a ton of stock into who does or doens't follow SU on instagram but it's never a bad sign. You would assume SU would pursue Stankavage but again with these 5 star attackmen you really have to identify 1 or 2 and make a big play. I suspect SU is going to take at minimum 3 attackmen in this class, I suspect like Woods he is one of the guys they will make a play for.

Edit - I would also think SU would make a play for Asaro and someone commented on Holborough following SU on instagram. Again though I would caution everyone that while this is a massive class for SU the top end of the D1 pool for lax recruiting is cutthroat. The usual ACC suspects, Maryland plus the IVY's (who have really come on) not to mention Cornell are all going to be extensive competition. Getting 1 or 2 guys from that top 10 list would be a great accomplishment. Think SU is gonna be involved with at least 4 of the guys on that least maybe 5 but again keep expectations in check.
