I was fortunate at SU. I was an all state prep QB walk on from N.J. who no one but Rutgers offered, was given a scholarship at SU but almost flunked out my freshman year due to the load of FB vs. academics. However, I had the opportunity to watch the last really great back to wear 44. The backfield of Floyd and Larry ran around, past and through opposing defenses. A very great time for me, every SU fan and the FB program.

I agree with using 44 as a recruiting tool. It should never have been retired. We need another back with the skills of a Little, Brown or Davis.

But I also believe the most important position on the team is the QB.

We need great QB’s like McNabb, Graves, and McPherson. As everyone knows, or almost everyone, we were on the very, fast track for the services of Michael Vick. He was on a campus visit with his idol DMc, starry eyed for SU and ready to commit. DMc was on the phone with his mother who was delighted about the call. She was the decision maker and told DMc geography was what it was all about and her son was going to play in his native VA. Vick and had no option but to listen to mom. Otherwise the transition to Vick, who was 22-2 for two years as a starter with VT, would have been seamless and it may have begun the great QB tradition at SU.

Since DMc we haven’t had a quarterback who doesn’t look like he’s a deer in the headlights throwing on the run to anyone and encountering the inevitable interception, IMO.

The two points: get the 44 in front of the right back and recruit another DMc. EASIER SAID THAN DONE, but until then we are not the prominent FB program we used to be and won’t be until these two points are addressed.

The QB’s that won:

D. McNabb : 95-98 9-3, 9-3, 9-4, 8-4 35-14 .714

Marvin Graves: 89-93 5-4-2, 10-2, 10-2, 6-4-1 31-12-3 .707

D. McPherson: 83-87 23-9-1 .712

Very nice recount of our three greatest QB's. Who would be fourth? Nassib?

Cassata had a great senior season. IIRC, he and Csonka played in a post season all star game in Hawaii and the two of them tore it up. Before that though, Cassata outplayed Heisman winner - UCLA's Gary Beban at the tail end of the season. I think I got that right.

Put up 50 plus points both over a 100 yards rushing.....Hula Bowl? Hawaii

Rick Cassata was damn good and Todd Philcox went 10-2 as a starter. Two guys that nobody talks about.

Dungey and Womack look very, very talented.

But I completely agree with OP and really appreciate his unique view on the matter.

Total yards: Rick Cassata 266, Gary Beban 9. SU wins 32-14.
