60's Songs

When I was in social work school we had a "Social Worker Follies," a satire of everything social worky. It was a performance in front of the entire school. I wrote and performed this Dusty Springfield song, and a young man fell in love with me. Here are the lyrics:

Etiology of a Social Worker

I've never really had a goal to call my own
But now I've got to have one and be on my own
So what are my talents? What have I got?
The only thing I do well is I talk a lot.
So that gives me a clue:
SOCIAL WORK is what I'll do!

Helping other people makes you feel so neat.
Especially when your clients kiss you on the feet
I'd be so empathic, and always touch base.
You'd never see me turn a person into a case.
It's clear the world needs me!
A SOCIAL WORKER's what I'll be!

I love it at my agency
There's just one thing I hate.
My paperwork's three months behind
And I may not graduate.
(I swear I'll do it!)

It's a noble calling for the soul that's true
Besides, there's really nothing else that I can do.
I'm not maladjusted. I'm really quite nice.
And very good at giving other people advice
I'll sit their psyches free!
A SOCIAL WORKER's what I'll be.
