ACC, PAC-12, and BIG alliance / conference realignment

ACC has dead wood and the Big 12 doesn't. Once Colorado jumped and OU and UW fled to the B1G, the ACC could have offered Cal, Stan, ASU and Utah and would have got them.
iowa state and wvu say hi

The ACC did try, the article from Adelson last week noted the ACC has had discussions for over a year with PAC 12 schools. As has been noted about 5 dozen times the remaining PAC schools didn't want to leave which was shown correct when they tried to keep the conference together until the bitter end. It also seems unrealistic to expect the ACC to take 7 PAC 12 teams at any point.
The B1G wasn't going to let any other conference take OU and UW. Can't see taking both teams from Arizona, ASU is the big market team.

This is why I admire Brent Yormark from the big 12 conference. He is Bold and aggressive. If we had him is ACC leadership, I bet he would’ve pushed to make this happen.

ASU Utah Colorado Stanford Cal capture 4 of the major western markets. The great thing about realignment is that these teams will become available again in about six years.

If the ACC had been bold and aggressive when USC and UCLA went to the Big Ten, they could have added Oregon, Washington, Cal, Stanford, Arizona, Utah, Arizona St for a Western division.

To try and re-create that with Oregon State, Washington State, San Diego State, Cal Stanford SMU illustrates a huge wasted opportunity.

Checking in, has the Atlantic coast conference grabbed any teams from the Pacific coast yet?

Can’t force someone to leave if they don’t want too, I would say the P12 had inept leadership that didn’t see the writing on the wall

On the bright side, I look forward to our first 10:30 PM matchup vs Cal, with Dave Pasch and Bill Walton.

Sick. Any teams located next to the Indian Ocean we could pull in next?

I find it hard to believe ESPN is signing off the ACC adding 7 Pac 12 teams. ACC in my mind could have been more aggressive previously but your talking about teams literally on the other side of the country that clearly had reservations about leaving even when the PAC 12 was on its death bed. The ACC making a preemptive strike for UCLA and USC just wasn't feasible for a variety of reasons.

And if I asked Jennifer Aniston out on a date 30 years ago, she still would have laughed at me.
What are you talking about? ASU is an AAU school and wanted to be in a more academic association like the ACC, especially with Cal and Stan. I'm sure people there and Utah are wishing things worked out differently.

A lot of teams potentially to be in the ACC were proposed in the 1950s as The Airplane Conference.

[I think Tom had a post about this conference about a year ago.]

I mean, every time you think it can't get wackier, it does.
ASU and Utah were very hesitant and didn't really want to join the Big 12 but felt they didn't have any other choice.

I think it works best for Stanford / Cal for the league to add Wash St and Oregon St. or some other west coast teams. I don’t think that works best for the ACC and I don’t think calford is in the position to dictate terms
SU basketball is playing in South Dakota so why not Pullman or Corvallis. Easy flight trips out of Syracuse.

I’m not a huge fan of this. Seems crazy to only add 2 west coast teams by themselves. If we are going to do it, wonder if it would make sense to grab Washington state and Oregon state as well. Merge with the PAC and get their 16 million worth of NCAA tournament units. ACC teams I believe are right around 40 million currently. Tell them we will take them but they will make 20 million. Which would probably be more than they would make in the MWC or AAC. Now you’re looking at roughly 96 million more dollars to pass around the ACC. Half of the four teams annual payout, the tournament units, ACC network value from Oregon, Washington, and California. Not to mention if there is anything like the 4 years with no payments that has also been discussed, that would be an even bigger monetary value.

You know what, screw it, add SMU and San Diego state as well. 6 western oriented teams. ACC network into California, Texas, Washington, Oregon. Tell each team they will only get 45% payout till 2036. Without calculating ACC network revenue from those states, this would be an extra 120 million, not to mention the roughly 16 million in tournament units or the thought of teams forgoing payments for several years. Take this extra 136 million and make it incentivized. Better your revenue sports do, the more money you get. Competition would bread more successful sports programs. Which would then make a more successful conference.
