Nothing terribly novel here, but Matt Hayes (writer) ☝️ is very well connected to Stankey. Not saying that Stankey served as a Ghost writer here, just that the author’s mindset was very likely pressure tested via Stankey in the last few weeks.

But this cannot be as we were informed over the past several months that UNC is THE PRIZE, not Clemson or FSU.

On a serious note, the SEC can want Clemson and FSU immediately but Clemson is not likely to pay the exit fee right now and it is hard to imagine that FSU can raise funds for the exit fee any time soon. They won't have a quick ROI, and can get out for peanuts in six years, possibly a year or two earlier as the exit fee drops.

If they leave after 27-28 then they just have funds withheld. They wouldn’t need to raise exit fee money. Although without income they would need funds to pay for salaries and costs. Also this is assuming they get a full share in the new conference which probably doesn’t happen. Especially before the new TV contracts.

I don’t get the premise of the article’s headline. The B1G needs to catch the SEC in both sports.

Yeah, really. Just because Michigan and Ohio State won titles, that does not disturb the analysis. So what if Florida and Tennessee haven't won lately. Georgia and Alabama started rolling.

The bigger issue for the SEC was perhaps the B1G getting 4 spots in the playoffs to the SEC"s three. But I suspect that will fix itself this year. And if not this year, then next year when the SEC goes to 9 conference games.

Clemson also has to wait for the Dabo buyout to go down. $60M right now. But if he starts winning again in 2026-2027, they may have to extend him again or risk the brand fading by 2030-2031. If he keeps losing, the brand could fade and they will need to find $25M in buyout PLUS the exit fee. They are picking a bad time to not have a great team...

The CCGs are dying. Nobody wants to play (or watch) a game where the only thing that matters is seeding. However, play-in games are where the money is. Its a playoff game, only the conference gets to keep the money. More people will watch #3 Ohio State play #6 USC (or #4 Indiana vs #5 Michigan) for the chance at a playoff spot... than #1 Oregon vs. #2 Penn State for a trophy for a conference that neither played in 40 years ago.

And that is one way of understanding why those that have been talking this the longest feel that any break away will mean just 4 conferences at absolute most, with only 3 more likely, and only two preferred by both BT and SEC. So no more set aside for a champ of a non-Major conference.

The most important goal of the people pulling the strings is creating a new top tier for CFB that will mean culling out most of current D1A (FBS) schools.

1980 was the last UNC ACC championship in football. But 1981 was a team that in some ways was better, even with 2 losses. One was because turf issues meant that we were short 5 or 6 starters (GT easily had the worst turf in ACC history). The other was by 2 to eventual National Champ Clemson. Danny Ford and a number of Clemson players said after the season that their toughest game al year was not UGA with Herschel Walker nor Big 8 champ Nebraska but UNC.

I think the doing less with more begins to apply in late 1983 and then takes over the rest of Crum's tenure. It may have peaked in Mack Brown's first 2 seasons: 1-10 and 1-10. It has never gone away.

That’s fine. My point is that when a conference has 4 auto bids and some 7-5 team gets in automatically while a 9-3 team in another conference does not it makes the whole thing stupid.

None of this is even pretending to crown a champion. It’s just a grab for guaranteed money. Players and fans be damned.

But college football fans will happily eat up this slop, and even defend it, because that’s who we are and what we do these days.
 
20+ team playoff? No point in the regular season at that point. Have a mildly successful season and you get in the playoffs... wooo.
