2016 Teleconference -

Stephen Bailey ‏@Stephen_Bailey1
Syracuse HC Dino Babers going on the ACC coaches' teleconference now. Will provide updates.

Syracuse HC Dino Babers on No. 3 Clemson: "I just don't see any weaknesses."

Syracuse HC Dino Babers: "We have a huge task and we're going to play in a hostile environment. ... Hopefully we can survive this thing."

Syracuse HC Dino Babers on playing in tough environment vs. Notre Dame: "I didn't think we handled it very well."

Syracuse HC Dino Babers didn't want to talk about moving RBs to different positions. Commit said he was told that would happen last week.

Syracuse HC Dino Babers also didn't mention a number of signees his staff is targeting for the 2017 class. At 20 now.

Syracuse Football ‏@CuseFootball
"The team draws energy from the way he battles. I like his fire and I like his grit." @CoachBabersCuse on @EricDungey

Andrea Adelson ‏@aadelsonESPN
Dino Babers on Clemson: "You may be talking about the best college football team in America, regardless of how the vote came out."

David Hale ‏@DavidHaleESPN
If Dino Babers was in the CFP committee room, pretty sure Clemson would’ve come out No. 1 by a mile. He’s making a STRONG case for it.

Matt Fortuna ‏@Matt_Fortuna
Dino Babers doing his best Lou Holtz impression with Cuse facing Clemson. As ACC moderator wishes him luck, Dino: “I’ll take all that luck."

Steven Bailey followed this with an unbelievably dumb line (recruiting and hearsay) of questions. He simply doesn't get it.

my first thought when I read the above was 'whos asking these stupid questions?'. it's the ACC conference call, who and why would ask about recruiting? The call is about upcoming game talk/questions. Its not the forum for the question. No he doesnt get it, he's an idiot.

He actually brought-up the quote from one of the RB recruits regarding current RB's changing positions! Such an inappropriate time and place to ask such a dumb question.

I would love to see SU limit his access.

really not the format to be asking those questions.

I don't listen to these conf calls, so I don't know all the topics. But from everything I've read about them, yes, it seems a little embarrassing to be asking those types of questions in that forum.

Like I have been saying...

the ADs office should contact the paper and have a discussion.

he probably asked it on the ACC call because Dino flips him off when he tries to gain access otherwise :0

he does realize that no coach is going to answer those questions about recruiting almost ever and position changes perhaps after the spring game if at all .

These are the moments where I have to question SB's overall awareness. I realize there a certain stories that they want to tell, or have been planning on writing. But, as mentioned here extensively, you have to understand the environment/forum you're in and wether or not it's the time and place.

He's loved writing articles about recruiting details in the past. Recruits that were stonewalled, what recruits have been told directly, etc., but this is another instance where he's just demonstrating poor judgement.

I would think so, yet he asks it anyway...

Not allowed to criticize Bailey around here. At least I can't anyways, got a stern talking to in another thread.

Sometimes I think SB asks questions he knows will get zero response so he can prove to his friends in the business that Syracuse likes to "limit access" and "control the narrative" - like those things aren't true about every AD in the country.

Ask tough questions that will get an answer.

It's worse than poor judgement...it's a complete lack of professional awareness and protocol.

Did he really think those were appropriate questions to ask on a weekly ACC teleconference? If so, then he is completely clueless.

IMO, it's not out of the question that Dino felt ambushed by his questions. Maybe the AD dept will have a heart-to-heart with the powers that be at the PS?

Not defending Bailey here. Just shedding more light on the situation.

The only reason Bailey asked what he asked on the conference call is because SU gives zero access. No ability to talk to anyone behind closed doors and off the record, no ability to get a feel for what's going on, no chance to discuss and flesh things out. Bailey is asking the question on the call because it's literally only the opportunity he has. He's taking advantage of an opportunity that SU can't control.

And SU can't cut him off because SU Athletics would look petty and hyper-sensitive. It would be a unnecessary bad PR situation for a department that has had bad PR situations in the last 5 years.

It's the dance that PR and journalists do.

Whether it was a good question or good timing is beyond my scope.

Yep. So he shouldn't ask that question at all.

Use the limited access to ask questions that will actually be answered. They don't have to be easy ones. But he had to know the % chance that it would be answered would be less than 5%. Coaches can't talk about recruits and def don't want to discuss recruiting during a game week where they are playing the #2 team. There are so many more things the fans/readers would want to know.

I think he thinks his readership is made up of just the people who leave the horrible comments about how bad we are. Digging for dirt gets you dirty.

There are so many things that fans / readers would want to know, but we don't get to know ANY of it. Babers is so insanely tight-lipped that NOTHING gets out. So any time any little morsel floats out, they pretty much have to run with it.

Why not try to earn his trust? Why keep asking these questions in a setting where it's obvious it's not the time and place? We all could have said there is no way Babers would answer that question in this format. I think it's counterproductive to the goal of more access when you continue to poke and prod in that situation.

Bailey hasn’t earned the right to talk to anyone behind closed doors or off the record. And he sure as heck isn’t going to get any good info when he always writes with a negative slant. His agenda is negative.

Yes I know it’s not his job to be a cheerleader but your access is limited when you’re not, and rightfully so.
