Adam Weitsman has been cautious about NIL

While that may not be how the NIL came about, it is certainly what it is being used for. Did anyone not see this coming?
It's as simple as a booster paying a recruit $100k to make a poster of him with a company logo on it. What happens with the posters is irrelevant.
But what is the offer sans our scrap metal King is $0 and he decides to make it $100,000? There is a significant difference between the two figures...

Lands pretty much came out and said "Syracuse isn't paying enough, I'm going elsewhere."

In a world where the money was equivalent, he's leading a top10 recruiting class instead of Brown being a sub 200 ranked replacement.

I honestly think we should create a "come play for Syracuse and advertise for Syracusefan.com" fund raiser... I'd put in $100 every recruiting cycle to potentially help Red and GMac close some "tougher"recruits. Wouldn't most of us?

I was replying to a post about the intent of NIL vs the actual abuse of it to flat-out pay players to attend a school. Your scenario is a separate issue.
But, to indulge you, certainly, the bigger the pool is, the more money can be spent on luring recruits. That said, does a player care if the $100k comes from Weitsman vs Skaneateles Jewelry? I would say, no, he wouldn't. He's not going to look at a list like this:

Anthony Adams: $10k
Bill Brassky: $70k
Chatty Cathy: $ 20k

and say, "I don't like that Anthony Adam's is only giving $10k. That shows he doesn't care about me. The list Duke gave me has 4 people who all offered more than most of your people."

To summarize, "Here's to Bill Brassky!"

Does anyone on this board have any idea where his money really comes from? Is it from crypto? I just have a hard time believing he's gotten super wealthy from scrap metal. If this isn't an appropriate question to ask please feel free to delete. Just curious. (I think it's a relevant question for a fan / fan base to wonder about...)

Have you seen metal costs these days?

Aluminum went up 40% in a year 2020-2021.

Scrap means he doesn't pay much of anything for it.

Hes as motivated as any celebrity businessman I've come across and once you have money it tends to become easier and easier to make more of it. Can't imagine he has done anything nefarious in decades if that is the implication and as you say feel free mods to delete for posting that last part.

Lol

Surely not serious?
Absolutely. It‘s an opportunity for players to earn revenue from marketing their individual brands.

they shouldn’t be GIVEN anything

I think Weitsman’s money would be better spent in improving our current players. If Jimmy, Buddy, Joe and Cole come back, then pay for off-season surgery that installs bionic technology into their otherwise un athletic yet skilled bodies. Of course, he would have to pay for the required physical therapy as well.

That's against the rules. But not forever. Might as well test it out and let the Supreme Court sort it out, and get in front of the trend in the mean time.

So you wanna create a fund almost like a SuperPAC and that money would go to a recruit or recruits approved by members of this board? Great idea. I'd be in.

As someone who sells a lot of metals from machining, almost everything you wrote is wrong. Recyclers pay good money for most everything except basic steels.

NIL is not supposed to be a vehicle to ‘give’ players cash.

You don't think so?
Then I guess all those offensive linemen down in Texas getting $100K or whatever it was, are going to be really surprised when they are declared ineligible.

Very reasonable take by Weitsman.
I don’t expect him to just throw money away.

He would pay for players that would give him some value back. Don’t blame him one iota.
I don't either. However, that's the difference between him and big time boosters of some other schools. Those boosters will absolutely throw money away to ensure their teams get the best players. It's not really about getting a return on investment for them.

It's not, but everyone knew that's where it would immediately go. Anyone that thought it would simply by doing some local commercials and charging cash for an autograph was foolish.

The anonymous brown paper bags the money used show up in can now be clearly labled, "Money for player X."

Not sure if this is serious. I posted earlier in this thread about how scrap iron is a basic ingredient in new steel. Steel mills pay for the scrap. Scrap dealers make their money off the spread between what they get paid and what they pay for the recycled metal. That people don't realize they can get paid for all of the scrap iron, copper pipes, cables, etc that they just drop off at the transfer station doesn't change the fact that it's a pretty big business.
The current price for cast iron is well over $200/ton. Brake rotors are even higher.

He purchased courtside seats that are expensive, he has donated to JB’s charity. He brings high profile guests to games.

He owes Syracuse basketball nothing. He is a fan.
Nothing bills, jets and giants fans love seeing more than Tom Brady court side lol

Color me shocked that people with the kind of business sense to amass wealth aren't chomping at the bit to overpay for advertising services from 18-22 year olds. I thought rich boosters were just going to be throwing millions and millions at kids? Huh, guess not. Will there be some exceptions? I"m sure there will be but there first few times a booster drops a couple hundred thousand and ends up in the Toilet City Bowl or flaming out of the NCAAs in the first weekend and watching the kids they paid leave and go pro, they'll probably rethink the approach.

As for a school like 'Bama, what are they going to start getting, a team full of 5 star recruits every year? Well, I have some bad news for you...

It depends on how rich the boosters are. Weitsman is rich compared to most of us but probably not compared to the richest boosters. There are certainly filthy rich boosters that have made excellent financial decisions to get where they are that will consistently throw money at 18-22 year olds to help their team win. To them it's no different than flying to Vegas to drop a bunch of cash at the casino. It's play money and the priority of their team winning trumps most other things. They're not looking at a financial ROI. We've already seen it with the facility wars. A chunk of that money will simply shift to the athletes. That's why it's easy to see which programs will be able to buy the best players.

People with business sense have been paying college athletes a lot of money for decades and getting no business benefit for it. As far as advertising services? That's just so that it looks legit under NIL. Here's an example, a local auto dealership pays 12 kids $20k each to take a picture of them and puts them on a calendar that gets put on the counters in the dealership. Or they go directly in the recycling bin. It's not about the $ return. We're talking about people that spend $50k on a watch they put next to the $50k watch they bought the year before. There are a LOT more of them out there than you think.
