under Doug, the talent has been upgraded, but his coaching is still lacking. Is there anyone who can say that this is a well coached team that is sound fundamentally? Watching other teams today, I realize how far we are still behind the elite teams. Who can say with certainty that the coaching will improve over the next few years? I have no idea if a coaching change is warranted, however, I do know that Doug is not in the same league as a lot of the top head coaches out there today.

so we are like 110 other teams in that we are not as good as oregon or alabama? you make it sound like the talent is equal is all coaching.

We are not an elite team. We have not been elite since the late 90s and probably really the early 90s. Turning this thing around will not happen overnight. Or in four years. We are not located in a talent hotbed. This team is much more competitive than its predecessors and much more fun to watch. I see progress overall. Some steps are forward and some are still backward but the state of the program has improved. Despite this fans will probably still not come out in numbers until the bandwagon is in full gear which is probably still three years away.

We are not fundamentally sound. That shouldn't happen in year 4. It is getting old. This isn't a talent issue. The question is why are we so goddamn sloppy? If it is because we are young then next year should be a leap for us. If it is because we are not a well coached team, as Marrone keeps saying every presser, then he needs to be replaced.

Penalties

2009 59th
2010 101st
2011 83rd
2012 106th going into Cincy game

To compare

UConn

2009 2nd
2010 16th
2011 37th
2012 12th going into USF game

Mistakes can make a difference in Ws and Ls. We keep making them despite the players changing.

Also an interesting stat: on average this year we fall behind by 12.2 points every game. So despite being only 4-5, never being blown out, and leading the whole games vs UConn and Pitt, on average we spot our opponents a 12 point lead. The funny thing is we score 0.3 more points than our opponents this year. The UConn blow out kinda skews things in our final ppg difference but even if you take out the UConn game the average amount we trail by becomes 13.75 and the final score is a 3.375 deficit. So on average we make up 10 points per game after trailing by nearly two TDs.
