After watching……

Those games are officially over, no more participation trophies, man up….the real season begins now when we face a full court press every game from here on out.

I missed all the cupcakes we have had on our schedule. Some of you are stuck in years past.

VCU, AZ St, Indiana, Nova, FSU, Auburn, Gtown. That is 7 of our 12 games. 1 total that were in the Dome. Only Cornell and Lafayette are outside the top 200 in KenPom.

We simply have to execute now and keep getting Benny, Symir and Frank time to develop and hopefully get Bourama into shape as well to be an option if post season play becomes a reality. We won't see an ACC stretch any tougher than what we faced out of the gate this year.

Rebounding is an athletic endeavor.
The reason we beat FSU is they couldn't hit water from a boat shooting 13% from the 3 that night.
Yeah, I think some have sort of forgotten that. We were very fortunate as FSU was beyond dreadful that game.

But we were pretty bad offensively, too - it was one of those games where toughness wins out, in a venue where the home team hadn't lost in over a year - that's not a win to poo-poo in any way, nor is it to say a few of the losses so far are in any way excusable

When we are on, I think we can hang with anyone and potentially win. But, when we have unforced turnovers and play lazy, we can get crushed by anyone. This team has to have the discipline to control the effort every night. The shots won't drop every night, but they HAVE to value the ball and play smart every single play of every game.

Teams are doubling Joe on the press so someone else needs to go to the ball. Buddy or Swider have to flash and then hit Joe cutting. Make teams pay for pressing. Joe doesn’t always act like he wants the ball against the press and stands around. They don’t take inside cuts to the ball. Basic press offense. If they front Joe just clear behind him and throw over the press. We never do this.
This seems like something that needs to get resolved, especially for situations when we're nursing a lead at the end of a game and teams press us. Joe is obviously the guy we want to have the ball if it comes down to being intentionally fouled, but we also don't want to turn the ball over in these situations.

Yep, this could be an issue. We need a team approach to breaking the press. We need good spacing, and our guys have to know that completing a pass isn't the end goal. Setting up the receiver of the pass to have vision and space is important. Also, the other guys have to understand how to create space, and other guys have to make themselves available for a pass. Watching us try to break a press looks like utter chaos. Like others have mentioned, I am sure they do it well in practice going against walk-ons that don't pose much of a problem. They should ask Dino if they can borrow the defensive secondary to help them practice against the press.

Was anyone else trying to figure out different rotations when Jimmy went out with that shoulder issue? I was like "Ok, Benny isn't quite ready to be a starter, but maybe this will bring him along faster, it has to. But, who else. I guess with Bourama being available, Frank could try to play forward. I have been clammoring to try it for a while, but as an experiment in blowouts to see how he moved and flowed with the offense. Oh god, this is going to be bad. Jimmy is back? Oh good..."
Jon Bol looked more confident in his time yesterday, he could surprise.

I will take your word for it, I know he got in, but I didn't notice him at all.
He did for a few minutes, he looked focused and moved well in the zone. In previous games he played in, he kind of looked a little goofy. Maybe it was a sign for Benny that he has to pick it up.

FIFY. That said, hope the kid improves. Seems like a quality young man.

Athletic ability is way down the list:
1. Intelligence- reading the shots and the angles. Knowing where the rebound is most likely to go.
2. Heart and hustle - boxing out, getting physical and not giving up on the ball.

Dennis Rodman would have been a great rebounder if he couldn’t jump a lick.

I understand people not seeing it, but Benny is a player. He isn't the swaggy, doesn't give a crap city baller. He is a very talented, athletic and skilled player that is trying to think his way through a game right now. His confidence looks shaken, unfortunately, we don't have any of those swaggy, I don't give a crap city ballers to take him under their wing and teach him to be a dawg. Benny needs to figure out how to be a dawg. He's better than anyone on the team. The only one that doesn't know that is Benny. I think Dion, Carmello and DC need to come up to the hill and practice with Benny for a couple of days.

Benny, Symir and Frank tonight…..how can anyone question why the starters play so many minutes? Their basketball IQ tonight together, equaled that of a tomato can…..dear lord!
After 40 some odd years of coaching here, that question imo pretty much still hasn't been answered or explained."At least logically"

You can probably pretty much say that about every team in the power conferences. People need to stop twisting the issue well I'm not even going to talk about it anymore cuz there's no point but this team will be a bubble team at best unfortunately

You have added so much to the conversation. Such an astute and well thought out argument.

Hard to tell...
They beat Boston U Terriers by one and got outrebounded.
FSU is 191st in rebounding.
FSU is 300th in points scored.
Purdue, who is very good, pounded them by 28.
Hard to tell just how good FSU is.
I’m thinking FSU will finish in the top half of the ACC, same as SU.

I agree this seemed to be one of Benny's better games since exhibition. It seems to me like he plays his best in the first few minutes and then for some reason it slowly starts to erode? Not sure if it is concentration, game speeds up on him or what? I do not think he would be tiring.
I thought Benny would at least be able to be as effective as Quincy was as a freshman. That hasn’t happened so far. I’m hoping he improves by later in the season.

Could happen...I think it's one of those years where you could be in 6th place
two games above twelfth.

Next you will spew Chaz Owens will be in the rotation next right.
That was one of your takes before.

Why don't you people leave Chaz alone. That kid at SJF would become a bear of a lineman with a serious training and development program, if you can't see that your blind.

I got nothing against the kid at all and appreciate everything his dad did for the program.
I never put any expectations on the kid because I can be realist and not pretend he is something he isn’t that you try to spew.

Your takes are to elicit reactions. So I commend for being able to do that.

Chaz played a few minutes in 2 games. Against Lafayette he made a great pass to Jesse for a dunk and against Cornell he went up and got an offensive rebound and stuck it back in. Both were very strong legitimate plays. He seems very athletic to me and is always watching intently when Boeheim is going over plays with the players during TO's. He got an academic award last year for his GPA, Beyond that I don't know what his situation is. I do find it hard to believe that he would do less than our 5 star recruit is doing at this point if he were to be getting those minutes.

I just disagree with the first sentence. We cannot beat anyone aka everyone. We can be “on” and beat some solid teams, but we simply won’t be able to beat top tier teams regardless if we are “on”. I do understand the premise made though.

....are you from the Rochester area? SJF?
