AJ Long medically disqualified due to multiple concussions..transferring

From the interview with Long,

"I couldn't even tell you how many (concussions) I possibly had in the last three or four years. And I didn't want to bring them forward because I knew my time would be done."

I mentioned earlier that kids lie about injuries all the time, competitive nature to do that. To echo what he's saying here, I was once knocked out cold for a couple of seconds in a college lacrosse game, hopped up, had no idea where I was and even ran the wrong way on the field for about 10 yards. Went off, trainer asked me if I was ok and I told her I was fine. Went back in on my next middie shift. No way should I have played again that day.

I got dinged and saw stars several times over a few seasons but I never told anybody. The only thing you're thinking about at 19/20 is not playing and losing your spot.

I feel bad for AJ because it's hard to hang it up when your'e that young. Being that it's football and his symptons he's making the right decision.

this kid is driven man and i'll root for him forever. I can only hope my kids' are this goal oriented and driven at the same age.

"At some point, he plans on returning to the football circle. Whether that's as an undergraduate assistant with the Orange or a graduate assistant is left to be seen. But Long's aspirations to inspire and mentor younger players and provide opportunity for boys like he was given resonated throughout the 35-minute interview.

"I feel bad for some of these colleges because I plan on putting together some of the most insane college recruiting classes that you've ever seen," Long said. "My goal as a recruiter and coach is at one point to get the top 25 kids in the country in one class."

Later in life, Long hopes to open his own high school and continue helping athletes to greater opportunities through the sport that threatens his well being."

That's what I don't get. It's been 11 months since he played a game. He hurt his hand, was learning a new grip and redshirting. Suddenly his career is over due to concussions?

We'll have to get used to suddenly losing players like this as there's more and more scrutiny of these things and of course they'll have our best wishes going forward in life. But how does a kid who hasn't played since last season suddenly have multiple concussions? And if it was based on something that happened last year, why did it take so long to determine it? It doesn't make sense.

Did you read the AJ Long interview on Syracuse.com? It is pretty clear how everything happened and when.

Did you read my subsequent post from 10:27AM today?

Great kid. He has more going for him than most middle aged people: The kid has focus, determination, ability to deal with issues - especially the ones beyond his control. Gotta respect the kid. I hope he stays Orange and HCSS is able to work him onto the team in other ways.

Best of luck, AJ.

Yet we are so quick to say Dungey will be okay, because he went into the locker room and was allowed back out on the field. Of course he says he is okay. But is he?

Long suffered a concussion falling out of bed. Dungey took a rocket to the head. For the 2nd time.

Any chance he just wants to attend school closer to home, since he can't play anymore?
Ya, I obviously don't know. Just thinking the fact that syracuse is a good school and he would be going for free.

I honestly question a coach who would be completely willing to take on a kid who has already been medically disqualified for concussions. Obviously, maybe a second opinion from different doctors will reveal something else...but that's a very dicey situation for sure, if he actually wants to go somewhere and try to play.

No idea if that's what's going on here, of course. Only time will tell.
