Now that SU has renewed the Gtown rivalry I think the last game that needs to happen every year is Uconn and SU in MSG. We are very much tied to MSG with Uconn and it would be a very hyped up game every year. Our game with St. Johns may cause some difficulty with this but I feel this needs to happen. This would be the game I would travel to NYC for.

We don't need them.

You might be in the minority.

The hate for UConn is exactly why I want to play them. I hate them more than any other team. More than Duke. More than Gtown. You would be excited to see them play in MSG. So much history there. My Gtown hate is tempered because they haven't won in a really long time. I HATED losing to UConn and loved it when we beat them which is why I loved those games. Ignoring them won't make them go away like some people believe they are going to do now that we are in ACC.

One word. No.

I'd rather play UConn every year than G Town.

Uconn beens more of a rival to us than G Town has for over a decade now.

Cuss me out if you'd like, but it seems obvious.

I'm one who never wanted to play Georgetown ever again, hasn't been a real rivalry for a long time, and it was their stance along with St John's, and the other Catholic schools which led to the demise of the Big East. When we joined the ACC, we should have left all the Catholic schools behind.

I would agree with part of this. However, rivalries are the way they are because of the history/tradition. Think of this as being similar to UConn's success. Non-existent, then ~25 years of success. Now they're the best team in college basketball history.

I'm part of the younger Syracuse fan generation, but anyone who doesn't agree with Georgetown being our biggest rival hasn't been alive long enough to see the history between the two of us or they haven't put in the time/effort into watching old games, reading old articles, or reading the posts right here on this forum.

Just my opinion.. but I think in the past 10 years our top rivals have been

Villanova
Uconn/Louisville
Pittsburgh/Georgetown

That's just my opinion. I agree with what a lot of people are saying in this thread. But I just think a series between Uconn and SU would be far more exciting.

Many reasons why I have no attachment to playing Uconn. Really I do not care about Gtown much either, but they at least give us exposure in the Wash/Balt area.

Uconn is not a long time rival, they were late comers to the league, and parlayed that to some considerable success. They have always been a poor fan base and in my opinion can rot before I would want them on the schedule for a series. Before entering the Big East we played them occasionally, but they were small time and never considered a rival. You thinking of them as a rival shows you have not followed SU for very long.

St.johns provides us with MSG/NYC exposure.

I've followed Syracuse for nearly all 20 years of my life. The way I see it is, it's a new century. Uconn has won multiple national championships in the past 20 years. They are a top tier program regardless of their history or fan base. Our team will be better for playing programs like Uconn, not play G Town and SJU. G Town should just be left to rot.

I don't mean for any of this to be offensive, just speaking my mind. I don't have nearly as many years watching CBB as some of you do.

Think of the environment in and around MSG if we were playing UConn in NYC next year. That is what college basketball is all about. Now think of SJU or Gtown fans if the game was in NYC. UConn fans are the worst. But they travel. Fans are what makes great rivalries and we don't like each other. Gtowns fans are for the most part non existent. The SU/Gtown rivalry is what made me a fan. But the UConn games are what brought it to another level.

Not denigrating your fandom just it's lack of longevity, and historical relevance. St. John's is our longest rivalry of the group we are discussing. True they have been down for quite a while. Georgetown would fall in between, and Uconn comes in dead last. Their recent success was because of one very good coach coupled with being in the Big East. We should contribute no further to their programs survival by playing them in a future series.
We have a strength of schedule in the ACC that does not need embellishment further.

We recruit the Wash-Balt area. We recruit the Philly area. We recruit the NYC/NJ area and have a zillion basketball fans there.

Hartford and Storrs does diddly for us. We don't need them. Gtown, Nova, SJU, Duke, NC, Pitt is fine.

inb4 UConn trolls come out and say we're "scared"

I've thought it would be awesome to have MSG split with half the tickets sold by SU and the other half by Storrs. Make it a basketball version of the Red River Rivalry. But I've been to a few of our games against them in the BET and we dominate the bars in the MSG area before the games. I think that's because our fans mostly either live in the City or are there for the week. Their fans pollute metro north so they don't have as much time for pregaming.

I grew up with the original Big East, that's when I fell in love with Syracuse. I would rather keep those rivalries alive than with any team from the 'expanded' Big East. I'm old school, I guess. UCONN doesn't do it for me. They never have. They have had a tremendous amount of success and we've had some good games, but playing UCONN just doesn't excite me for some reason, there just doesn't seem to be any true rivalry between the teams - the true rivalry with UCONN seems to be among the fan bases if you ask me.

I'm not that old so correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't uconn part of the "original " Big east? They sucked for a decade while we dominated and the big east was in its heyday, but they were never an " expansion" team.

I like the Georgetown series. Always needs to happen.

In basketball they were, but came into the football league late they played div 2 until they decided to upgrade many years after the football portion of the league was formed.

id be fine playing them once in a while but annually no need with gtown, nova and st johns

UCONN is playing Duke at the Barclay Center this year but I'd rather play SU in MSG.

I doubt it will happen. UCONN would be ok with it but JB doesn't exactly have a reputation for scheduling tough early in the season. Not saying that's bad, just that he is more inclined to play tune up game than, say Calhoun or Ollie or Izzo who seem to think it helps them in March.

I get the sense some SU fans push the Georgetown rivalry hard because they don't want to admit that UCONN has achieved rival status.

Let's face it - Georgetown is nice from a nostalgic sense (closing Manley and all) but UCONN is a bigger name and a bigger game.

You thinking of them as a rival shows you have not followed SU for very long.

The fact you wrote this and the fact that many UCONN fan don't consider SU to be a either (Duke, UNC, KS, KY instead) is exactly why the game should be played.

Fans here and the boneyard go out of their way to deny the reality - UCONN and SU are each other's biggers BB rival regardless what message board posters say.
