Another AWFUL crowd being shown at the open of the telecast

Which is more people that was in the dome today

-

i'm not arguing that. it was an embarrassment today. but a bad 4 years like we had under Gerg, and basketball would be looking a decline as well. in this town you just can't pencil in 25k

This I have to disagree with. Alabama would draw more than 42,000. Absolutely, no doubt, 100%...at the same time I see what youre saying. The problem lies in that its Tulane. We will get a bigger crowd for Clemson, Pitt, BC than we did today. If you look at hoops, how many people come when we play teams like Wagner last year? For a lot of schools its a lot, but realistically there were 13,000 in the seats (Im sure announced was 5K bigger) for a 35K capacity stadium. Do I expect us to sell out 35K for Wagner in basketball..no. I really do believe that there are some other forces that have made our attendance for football what it is. 1) Get a Life...many did. 2) G Rob years. 3) TV...every game is on TV and its a hell of a lot easier for people to watch it on TV than have to go to a game. It sucks, and I dont get it as I am at every game, but its reality. Partially Marsh is right. Partially its other factors.

Good points. One thing people never mention is the different times of the year. Many people especially on great weather fall weekends dont want to be stuck inside the dome for 3 plus hours. Winter time i cant wait to get the hell out of my house because i never go outside in the winter because its such a terrible time of the year.

Heres the thing. Even at 9-12 we still have a chance to go to the final four. At 0-1 ( hell even at 12-0) we have zero chance of playing for a title. Hope helps put fannies in the seats where no hope does not.

what another pathetic showing. i know the attendance was announced larger then Wagner, but it wasn't the actual case. Absolutely embarrassment. Not to mention half the people there aren't even paying attention to the game, and too busy socializing. I actually got looks by the people in front of me who were trying to talk and i was yelling in the seat behind them. i gave them a look that said DO NOT WITH ME, and they went right back to gossiping. I looked around and it was happening all over, nobody clapping, cheering, etc. Plus the student section totally cleared out at halftime. By the beginning of the 4th quarter we were lucky if there was 12k left.

And no way hoops draws 30k if we are 9-12. this town is as fair weather as it comes. everyone wants to sit home, watch on tv, and b!tch about the uniforms (which are quite nice if i may add), but nobody can get out and support the team. simply pathetic

i forgot to add what a terrible job by the syracuse marketing department. didn't hear 1 word all week about this being our 700th win

You might want to get on SU marketing, the SU folks that do the donation/pricing structure, the surrounding areas like Buffalo, Rochester, Albany and closer (we aren't a state school) and the alumni who don't flock to football games. The ONLY people supporting the program are the local season holders and local non seasons all in smaller numbers in the past for a variety of reasons not all of which is having leaves to rake.

i agree with that, but how do you explain almost every other bcs school in the country? at most places football games are events where at very worst people use it as an excuse to get away and party.

the only problem i had with the marketing of this game was it was our 700th program win, and i'm willing to be 75% of the fans had no idea. how about a couple radio/tv spots asking fans come out and celebrate our 700th win. i agree with everything else.

Because football here is not a religion like many people have said. The nfl rules over college in this state. It just is what it is. Same reason why when alabama or arkansas are 8-8 in hoops they play in half empty arenas too.

There needs to be some serious investment of time and staff on a creative marketing approach. It might be a smart idea for SU to join forces with the Chiefs and get a real marketing group in as consultants. IMG sells corporate sponsorships and ads during broadcasts.

People on this board have come up with some good low-risk ideas (buses from Albany/Buffalo) already. Anyone know if SU has any ads in Buffalo at the Ralph or First Niagara? Seems like it might generate more ticket sales than those at Yankee Stadium.

Why not look to get into some kind of package tours- combine a game with a Finger Lakes Wine Tour, Golf at Turning Stone or in Lake Placid, put a 10k race on Sunday morning after a home game and have it finish at midfield of the Dome? Try to get people (alums included) to make a weekend of it in CNY but highlighting something that appeals to people other than die-hards.

Have in-stadium giveaways of significance. Give a trip to Duke/UNC with the hoops teams, ACC tourney tickets, autographed items, court-side tickets, a car from Fuccillo.

There should also be more local business involvement. Daryl/Floyd should be heading downtown to companies regularly. Have meet and greets, luncheons with coaches or former players. Make it personal to people.

I didn't even know about 700 until the other day when someone mentioned it here.

No "----" Bees. Pathetic. No billboards, no TV adds, 1 radio commercial here locally. My workmates didn't even know there was a home game this weekend. What? SU marketing is pathetically non-relevant!

Did they spend all of the ACC monies already?

I agree with most of that. We need to market from Buffalo to Albany and from Binghamton to Watertown. Not NYC.

I don't know I guess I just remember going to game after game for years where I couldn't even hear the person next to me. I guess I just don't want to accept that it could actually come to this. More depressing then anything else.

Hate to even say it, but maybe were to the point where we actually have to remind the community that there is a home game this week?

I agree.

We have 14 days to create an 'event' around the next game. It starts with getting a game time announced and out there. By Tuesday everyone in Onondaga county needs to know the time of the Clemson game. Gives everyone a chance to gets their crap together to prepare to attend.

As much as I hate to say it , maybe they should black out the home games unless x number of tix are sold.I am totally embarrassed at the size of the crowds.Maybe they could show the games after they have been played.I don't know what the answer is but this crap cannot continue.

Never gonna happen

To Marsh's point, do you think that people in Syracuse understand how good Clemson is? They definitely know Duke and UNC are games they want to attend in basketball. The marketing department needs to educate the "basketball people" in the next two weeks. I doubt there will be a sell-out, but 45,000 would be fantastic.

Yes, I think people know. They're the big name in the acc. They know it. The problem is the casual fan is looking for an event. To get 45k, it has to set up perfectly. 3:30 or later game so everyone can rake their leaves and then make it to game.

It would still draw 30,000 three times.

Basketball they talk about moving the court to the floor to try and get 45,000.

Football an undefeated #1 ranked Alabama could come in and we wouldnt draw 42,000.

It is what it is and its never going to change.

That's some hyperbole. The hoops team has demonstrated that it can go 30-1 and be ranked #2 and not draw 30,000 three times.

For both teams, nearly every game is televised. There aren't enough fans to sell out; there aren't enough casual spectators to make up the difference for any but the largest event games. Tulane at 12:30 did not qualify. Those of us who showed up had a fun time, though.

Actually, student section was less than Wagner from my observation. Hang your heads low, students.

Hoping for better in 2 weeks. We'll see...

For those too lazy to get out of bed by noon and watch a free and exciting football game, yeah. They should be embarrassed.

But it was an OK student turnout - better than probably two-thirds of the games in the past four years. Late-arriving, though. I was way later than I'd like (walked through the door to catch kickoff at 12:30) and the student line was still almost as deep as Archbold, waiting to get into the Dome. Kids probably waited in line for 15 minutes and missed kick. Someone's got to fix the security theatre business. It's not helping.
