Anyone hear this new stadium rumor

Not quite clear exactly which blocks they are referring to. But at least the scale shows about how big it is compared to the existing blocks. IF (and that is a big IF) this is real, the good thing is that there would be lots of space around it which could be purchased for parking lot space. Those existing small businesses in that area (corner markets, Dr. offices, rental properties) would seem able to be easily convinced ($$$) to relocate. I have to believe they would leave Erie Boulevard as an access road on the north boundary.

An added plus of this site, I suppose, is that it really would just stretch the University northward...giving it still the feel of an on-campus complex, accessible to students and locals alike. Of course, it would be removed from proximity to the Quad. I can see why some think this site has real possibilities.
I worked at the biotech 18 months ago when it opened. You nailed the location from Left to Right and all you needed to do was move it up two blocks on the screen. I used a scale rule and the stadium would be over Erie Blvd.

and I liked what you did, it makes it so much easier to see the results

For those who haven't paid attention - the way Cuomo operates is to cut a deal or make some proposal where the the deal has basically been made - a couple of days of buzz about (whatever it is) and then something gets announced. Assuming the State is involved, it would be surprising that wasn't the case here.

Fair enough, but there's a reason cities don't build sports facilities with thousands of surface parking spots in urban neighborhoods.

I get it. I really do. And I trust your judgment and knowledge.

I like the idea of keeping the stadium near campus but trying to cram it into that area with limited surface parking makes no sense.

We probably get 1,000 more a game with a stadium at the bottom of the hill. We might get as many as 5,000 more a game with good parking and tailgating.

Not exactly near campus, but lots of other amenities including hotels, restaurants, plenty of space and access to the thruway - the old Carrier Plant site. They even did us the favor by leveling the buildings and grading the site. We can pay them back by naming the new Stadium after another sponsor not named Carrier.

There's no way to know this for sure, but I fear that those who think that lack of parking options keeps them from Dome events would find any parking arrangement unsuitable. It's just difficult to get 40,000 drivers into one 250,000-square-foot parcel and have all of them satisfied. And, if there were ~8,000 spaces, might that change in atmosphere result in some fans losing interest? I really don't know.

I do know that the football stadium/giant lot combo is inherently incompatible with the urban environment. The only NFL stadia in cities that I can think of that have done a really good job integrating into the neighborhood are the Seahawks stadium (and that only has 4,000 spots, some in garages; and it's a stretch - really on the fringe of downtown, next to railyards) and Ford Field (funny, since many wouldn't point to Detroit as an example of positive urban anything). Denver and Baltimore and a few other cities have built near downtowns, but their giant surface lots are blighted dead zones much of the time.

The new Vikings stadium has potential to boost up the east side of downtown Minneapolis; I wouldn't be surprised if that works out well.

We could strive to set an example of how such a big facility could complement and enhance the city; that'd be a great thing for Syracuse and a model for other areas. Hopefully we won't settle for the old way of an island stadium in the middle of a lifeless sea of pavement.

Good point, not surprising that an announcement would happen once the new chancellor took over and not before.

What are you basing that upon?

Just curious, as I live in Minneapolis.

The states real big Event in Syracuse is the state fair, the state fair grandstand is a horrible venue which should be used for chevy court type events. A 40 thousand seat arena could draw the biggest acts in the country during the fair time and also bring in monster trucks and other events that could be tied to state fair events though not on the grounds(no way never there) of the fair but perhaps close like near the mall or even downtown. Cuomo is a big thinker and one of the downfalls in the state big event here in Syracuse is that the concert draws for fair time are really lacking. Cuomo might be able to sell public money for such a venue if he can pitch it as an upgrade for the state main showcase event in upstate NY . just 4-6 events in that type of venue with 30-40 thousand people during fair time could really boost the fair image and take. Its one way they state could justify using public funds for a college or other sports teams arena.

As was the case more than 30 years ago, the Fairgrounds is the worst site they could choose.

Maybe, maybe not...

"Chobani, the best-selling yogurt brand in the U.S., has given Ulukaya a net worth of $1.1 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He is founder and sole owner of Chobani Inc., whose sales have quintupled since 2009, and has never appeared on an international wealth ranking."

Ok. I didn't reply because I was guessing there was zero chance of that happening.

Wouldn't SU still have nearly all of the parking which is currently available, PLUS whatever parking becomes available around a new site on Fayette? There is a lot of parking up and down University Ave. Lots of open lots that would be in walking distance. The point being, we would still be using the lots we have.

you're probably right, I just can't think of another donor locally with enough cake or the desire to be able to throw their hat in the ring.

Who says it has to be local
no one, but it would kind of suck if it was a company that had no local ties to the area other than having their name attached to the most iconic and well known heart of the city.

Increasing popularity of light rail and the completion of the St. Paul line (which merges with the main line in that area, if memory serves) is going to offer another high-capacity mode to get people to the site, and it's my understanding that the Vikings and the city have come together to push some non-auto-oriented tailgating (food trucks and such).

The city's doing well, real estate is a little cheaper in that neighborhood than it is in downtown proper, and there's been some residential development around the Dome. With the new stadium and these building blocks in place, I think more residential and retail will follow.

The area around AT&T park in San Francisco has also exploded according to the taxi driver who took us from the airport to the hotel. If done right, it can spur development - especially bars and restaurants.

I still don't like the idea, especially if it is under 45,000 for football.

San Francisco was / is exploding anyways...place is filthy with money. Sometimes the stadiums find the right neighborhoods.

I think politically, to be able to say you're rehabilitating a declined area like Kennedy Square, that gives Joannie and Cuomo great political ammo vs the Harbor.
Where are all of these Carrier employees? All of my buddies were laid off and the Carrier building is a dilapidated ghost town, sxeveral hundreds of thousands of square feet abandoned. Just like GM Fisher Guide, Lockheed Martin and so on.

Ironically the huge abandoned Carrier property could hold a gigantic dome facility plus ample parking.

Those damn liberals and their crazy minimum wage and over regulation. ;)

People without kids - disposable income!

I just don't think SF is a valid comparison. Still think this is nuts, we'll see. The NYS legislature is a killing field.

I visited SF for the first time last February and kind of fell in love with it. Just a beautiful city. Spotlessly clean in every way. And the best meal I've ever had at Keiko a Nob Hill with the wagyu beef add on to the tasting menu with wine pairings. Can't recommend it more.

how about the old NPG/Chrysler site. Lot's of space around the area and a few different ways to access the area

Beginning to look like they might have to name this thing the "Stephanie Miner Dome" to make it actually happen.
