Anyone hear this new stadium rumor

Beginning to look like they might have to name this thing the "Stephanie Miner Dome" to make it actually happen.

That's all political posturing. This is happening and they will make the announcement in the next week.

Is that your guess or do you have something a bit more substantial to back your statement? (Not being confrontational, just curious.)

Like I said in my first post, Minor's name was never mentioned in the first story to break on this and she was never invited when Cuomo spoke at the Biotech center...classic new York/new jersey politics is what is going on here.

That Kennedy site is too Damn narrow to put a stadium on it and the city would have to use eminent domain to make it wide enough and even shut down Erie Blvd. to make it a go. Biotech just spent 24 million to build their building plus the value of that land. Even though the state technically owns the land, upstate medical is not going to give it without a fight.

Think how much it would cost to shut down two roads or buy the land to make that footprint wide enough for even a 40,000 seat arena. will most of the seats be in the endzone.

plus they would have to take two parking lots around the area to be included and do you think the home owners want to give up the baseball diamond and basketball courts just a block east of the location to use as parking.

Remember the carrier dome is 500 feet wide w/o a buffer zone.

They are using this site to lay down the groundwork for another site for Possibly eminent domain laws to come into play.
.

I'm sure it is political posturing to a degree. But it still endangers this potential project's going forward. I've seen political posturing kill off more projects over the past 40 years than I care to think of.

My theory is this. Part is what I've heard. This was supposed to be annouced today at the state of the state address by the governor. Due the poor relationship between the governor and the mayor, she was not informed until late. The City is a mess financially. My guess is she leverages this situation for more state money.

If Cuomo's just looking to hand out half a billion dollars to Onondaga County before the election, why not keep the Dome, let SU put a few million into renovations, and take the state money for a high-quality light rail line that would service the Dome?

Much higher ROI on that than on a new midtown football stadium.

TexanMark, I know you're with me.

Because nobody in this country supports rails. Tragedy but true.

Like I said before, part of me believes this is political posturing. Cuomo and Miner do not like one another. Cuomo comes up with grand idea that will get Syracuse citizens excited. Miner rails against said idea. Cuomo turns public opinion against Miner for "blocking" the project. Syracuse citizens vote out Miner in next election. Cuomo gets rid of a problem. Maybe politics has made my opinion jaded? Maybe I can just see through the political BS? Only time will tell I guess.

Somebody's got to shoot this down. Makes too damn much sense. Besides, whoever let logic get in the way of a good board discussion?;)

Cuomo would support any republican from Onondaga county before minor.

She embarrassed him over the way he wanted to put pension plan into even more debt. She knows a lot more about pension plans than he does.

Maybe we should name the stadium "UNITY FINANCIAL STADIUM"

this is Miner's last term - only two terms allowed for city mayor thanks to Lee Alexander.

Nobody in Upstate New York, maybe.

Pretty darn popular elsewhere. New lines are opening this year in D.C., Seattle, Tucson (TUCSON!), and Atlanta (again, ATLANTA!). Norfolk opened one last year. And construction begins or continues on lines in Charlotte, Cincinnati, Dallas, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Kansas City, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, Tempe, San Antonio, and St. Louis this year.

If car-centric places like Norfolk, Tucson, Tempe, and Fort Lauderdale can build rail, of course a small old Northeastern city like Syracuse can do it and do it well.

Naysayers may nay, but rail is popular everywhere it's been built. If Onondaga County and the state are serious about leveraging public investment and building a successful region, past experience shows that rail would be a good project.

This is sounding more and more like a lot of hot noise, been what two days since the rumors really started and already people are backtracking.

This is a low density region with excess highway capacity. The "Rush Hour" is 20% of what it was 25 yrs ago. There's maybe 1/2 hr of minor congestion. There's no need for it. Who is going to use it? From where to where?

You know when there is a traffic problem in this town, one to two hours before and after a big football or basketball game, the State Fair, or when there is an accident or construction on 81 or 690. Otherwise it's not an issue. Daily normal traffic is a breeze.

Backtracking on a new stadium (or arena), yes. Miner has no say on improvements to the existing Dome, however, so there is still that. And the new Chancellor acknowledges that renovation of the existing Dome is indeed being discussed.

Downtown and Hill people. And those of us who live too far from work to walk and find car commuting unpleasant.

Excellent imitation of what critics said in every city planning to build mass transit, though. Somehow there was a need for it; people use it.

If the state is willing to give the county money to build a stadium I'll bet that Mahoney and Miner work out the differences. They collaborate well and it's crazy talk to say that you wouldn't take the money when the state is offering it. It'll get done.

There's no "Mass" to transit.

If there was a large area with dense population that need to be moved from urban neighborhoods to other places in the city, might make sense. If you had a large number of people converging on a central business district on a daily basis, it might make sense.

Neither of those exist in this community at this moment, and there's no prospect that it will be one in the near future.

Because a small segment of the population finds driving 30 minutes to work unpleasant, not so much.

the rail stuff is a big divide between right and left. lots of things are just philosophical disagreements where both sides know the other sides argument and reject it. but rail something that baffles each side. right has no idea why the left loves it so much and the left has no idea why the right doesn't.
