Anyone hear this new stadium rumor

I think we see it come to fruition sooner rather than later. If Cuomo and the County want to get it done. It will get done. Where there is smoke there is fire.

Unless the state is going to kick in a huge chunk of the money (they wont) Cuomo can want to go get it done all he wants, the realities of the $$$$ will never get this off the ground.

This would be a bad move. Here in Minneapolis, the U of M used to play at the Metrodome--10 minutes away from campus via public transportation from some parts of campus, but literally a 10 minute walk from other parts. But students didn't go and barely turned out for most games--it was just too far and too much of an inconvenience.

It's all a matter of perspective. 10 minutes is nothing to adults who already commute to the game. What's the difference between driving to campus or the inner harbor? But it would make all the difference in the world to students.

Maybe it's because Minny was a habitual 3-9 team had something to do with it.

They aren't turning out now as it is for football. And they are going to stop going to hoops games?

People bitch about lack of tailgating, that would solve that issue. I bet the traffic and walk take the crowd down for most football games by 10 to 15 percent.

I disagree. I look forward to seeing this get done. I think this is further along then many think. I don't see a pipe dream after reading that article. Time will tell. State or county being broke won't stop it. I still see state spending on construction and development all over, all over. Will be great for Syracuse

What would happen to all the iconic SU small businesses in and around the campus (Varsity, Manny's, etc.) that rely on revenue from SU games if you put a stadium on South Campus or the Inner Harbor? Wouldn't they inevitably go under?

The thought of having a UConn-esque football atmosphere where we have a depressing stadium in the middle of a big soulless parking lot makes me want to punch myself in the face.

There are times when progressive forward thinking is great (i.e. the move to the ACC) but I think there are other times when you just need to not mess with something that has worked so perfectly for so long. I think this new stadium debate falls in the latter group.

I would be one in favor of them making upgrades to The Dome to bring it into the 21st century.

I wouldn't be against thats for sure, but when push comes to shove I just don't see it happening. The state and Cuomo love to talk a big game but there are so many other issues I just don't see them spending what will probably be close to a billion dollars on this project.

Or maybe it was because it was just off campus, and too big if a hassle for students.

It is asinine to repeat an avoidable mistake made elsewhere.

Putting it at the inner harbor just because there's space would be an example of not thinking things through.

Naming rights = $$$. One of the new casinos coming down the pike perhaps?

something is going on here as I was working at the Biotech Accelerator project when Cuomo visited and gave a speech. He mentioned that they were hoping to get more high tech companies down there and just a few months ago I thought I heard something about a new hospital center to be built.

Now Cuomo has been at war with Minor over pension fund things and she was right to oppose them as Cuomo was looking to raid them in a back door way. Now COR development has Minor's stepson on their board and he may even be a Vice President or something, and COR currently has the rights to the site. 14 acres is not a big enough footprint to have 20,000 seat arena and have on site parking without taking other peoples land. Where is parking now to help ease the situation there, not much from what I remember.

It sounds like the state is still a battle with Minor as she is not being mentioned in the story here as someone who is on board. Sounds like petty politics is being played out here and the taxpayers will pay for it as my guess what ever gets built they will get massive tax breaks from the state and it will hurt the current property taxpayers in the future.

I'm not buying this at all as this a narrow piece of property...

just click on the satellite image. the site they are talking about would be the block north of point no.3 and the one block east of it

The thing is it wouldn't be in the middle of nowhere. The city struck out once by throwing alliance bank stadium up by the train station. The inner harbor idea would actually connect the mall with downtown. Run a train from campus. If only we had a name for the train... Hmmm.. But, all that being said I still love the dome. I like this as a 10-15 year plan.

yes mark, and to put the size of property in perspective just look at the property next to the Biotech Accelerator and notice only 8 rows of cars there for parking. That would along Fayette street by almond, but all the blocks are about the same. In order for it to work they would have to claim Water st. and all the properties to the north of it to Erie Blvd.

How can there be a "political buzz" about the project if Miner, Mahoney, and DeFrancisco don't know anything about it.

As long as the Post-Standard is throwing darts against the wall hoping that something sticks ... why not say that the new facility could include a monorail and free pony rides?

Agree. This sounds like total fantasy. It's going to be a 40K seat stadium that serves SU football and bball, an 8-11K Crunch hockey arena, a 10-15K-seat concert venue, and have a retractable roof? I don't see how it could serve all those different masters. How do you reorder the place to fit each purpose? What if there are conflicts? Who gets priority? If they built this, it would be the first of its kind in the nation and it would cost a fortune.

If the Governator wants it - it will probably get done. Isn't he up for re-election this year? Gee, what a coincidence.

The revenues from the facility would probably amortize the tax exempt debt very nicely. Some public authority could probably own it and lease it to SU. Unless, there is something quirky about NYS I am unfamiliar with, I don't see the financial math as undo-able.

I certainly like TexanMark's thinking of 44,444 seats (not benches - seats). I don't see the need for more than that capacity.

Since I am coming from 600 miles away, I don't have a preference for location. You all know better than I where the best place for it would be. I would only say that if there is a location that would draw more fans, offer a unified tailgate location, help the community in some other ways it would have my support.

Student don't support the program as they used to (nationwide trend by the way), so I don't think that should be a deal killer. SU can figure out how to get them there if they want to attend; many other school have to deal with this issue.

I would guess that they would tear the dome down and use the space for academic buildings.

Here's the deal though - a retractable dome would be pretty special and the buzz alone would help recruiting for a some time at least.

Needs to be part of Destiny, inner harbor, Armory. Monorails to the stadium. Heck, attach it right to Destiny. Families take a train from Buff/Roch/Albany. Shop, dine, game.

your right and the inner harbor has a much bigger footprint

you are correct as the dome has the biggest footprint of useable land left on the hill that the University owns.IN 2007/'08 I worked on the new S.U. science center and that was being discussed about and moving a new stadium to the inner harbor area and Congel being involved as a big money man. Think Cleveland and Foxborough Stadium with all the shopping being tied in. I think even Orangeyes would confirm this story. What's odd here is that COR development even owns the rights at the inner harbor.

Perfect place to have games and the new World of Beers bar that just opened up would be a great place to tailgate in bad weather

A retractable roof for 3 football games a year? Maybe a concert or two in the summer? What a waste of money.

Of course you are saying that without the benefit of any cost numbers or financial projections. Probably better to hold off on judgment until we know at least a few facts.

Here is all I need to know about cost numbers...

Fixed Roof $ < Retractable Roof $$$$

We're not getting Final Four's in Syracuse, not getting a BCS or Playoff Bowl game, not getting a superbowl etc. A retractable roof would be a waste of money. Even if it was given to SU by a super wealthy donor, its just a waste of money.

Won't be anywhere near a billion.

If they keep it around 45k I could see it running around $500M but that is just a guess.

I wonder if we have the technology to be able to push more seats into a half dome configuration (like two decks)? I'd think you'd have to keep them bench seating to save weight. I really think we need to keep our seating capacity to 27-30k for hoops.

Another thing about the capacity...it might be similar in size to the current Dome but will it have suites (Lexus and Chase) like at MetLife? That cuts down on capacity but is an income generator. The retractable roof to me is essential.

The big downside with the Kennedy area is we'll have scattered, urban tailgating still. Can we get the students up and down the hill? Would a rack/cog rail line work up the hill or is it not that big a concern and light rail is fine? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rack_railway If they build this without an integrated mass transit (light rail) they are going to be sorry.

South Campus and the Inner Harbor area tailgating would be much better. I think South Campus would be the best but the Inner Harbor would be similar to MetLife Tailgating. The biggest advantage with the Inner Harbor is the ability to link the University-Downtown-Inner Harbor-Destiny-Alliance/Train Depot and the Airport via light rail. Syracuse could really benefit from this. Highway infrastructure is there already. Land is available to build a spur line for light rail. Congel very well could be the naming sponsor and he could build his emerald OZ hotel too! :D

The huge downside to the inner harbor is the site is furthest away from campus. I really enjoy having games on campus. But let's be honest even South Campus is really not going to feel much like being next to the Quad. So many different angles.

For the basketball games ...it doesn't' matter where they build an arena the students will find their way to the games. Those students will move heaven and earth to get to the games I have no doubt about that. For football, well...different story.
