Anyone hear this new stadium rumor

I'm a fan of the alliance bank stadium site. Bus and train station there for out of towners. Destiny mall right across the street. Parking lot for tailgating. There might even be enough room to build a 45k stadium for football/ lax/ soccer/ baseball. Also next to it a 25k seat arena for basketball.

Ax the retractable roof. That's just an idiotic idea. That takes away probably 1/3 of the price tag.

And I imagine that they will do a better job negotiating the naming rights this time.

The Carrier name rights deal was historic in the sports world. Clearly, the out clause was not in the best interests given the corporate pull out, but innovation rarely comes with perfection.

They have some of the most in-the-know minds of sports naming right on various boards up on the hill. Not a worry. But don't expect a big, huge honkin' check either...though that depends on what sports will actually be played there.

Why would anyone outside of Syracuse support that? State championships are fine in the Dome. Just don't see the politics of that working.

Too many public events have been bumped from the Dome because of University events and uses. Like track & field, for instance. And when was the last time a big concert was held there?

Let me put in my vote for the Inner Harbor right now. You have such a great entertainment and travel infrastructure right there. 81 and 690 exits right there. Shuttles or cabs from the bus/train station would be a snap. You've got the mall, and it would connect the North Side of town to Franklin Square and Downtown. Plus plenty of parking (on flat ground!) to make for epic tailgating. No more hikes up the hill to go to the game. YAY!!

I like the Inner Harbor idea as someone who lives within walking distance to it, but I really think it would be better suited to have more hotels built there and not a new stadium.

I like the Kennedy Square idea which is not too far away from the Connective Corridor. I would rather see it go here than south campus as it integrates the university more into the city. It has the potential to really improve that part of the city over to Burnet Ave. Plus it would be closer to Shifty's ;)

By the way, NYS just shelled out $1billion to Buffalo a little over a year ago, what makes you think that Cuomo isn't looking for other ways to make an indelible impact of his governing for when he runs for the presidency?

http://www.governor.ny.gov/press/12042012-buffalo-billion-investment-plan

Syracuse needs a concert venue, the Crunch need a new home and the dome will need a new roof within the next 3 - 4 years. Why not combine all three and build a state of the art facility that would be the envy of colleges everywhere?

I'm skeptical, but Brent Axe knows nothing.

Interested to hear your take on this Mets based on your knowledge about Syracuse and the current plans regarding all of the recent construction around the dome from SU and ESF.

I always preferred south campus for a new stadium. Build up the area between main and south over time so it's one long campus.

But, something close to the train station would be great for us car-less city folk. Isn't Destiny like the 5th largest mall in the country now? Just something else to add to the draw.

Instead of a retractable roof, I'd much rather see some kind of retractable seating. Something very unique, like how the grass rolls outside of the stadium in Arizona. Make the basketball games much cozier by moving the seating.

20 years from now, SU will still be playing its football and basketball games in the Carrier Dome.

Tarky is still alive. Someone wake him up.

I would put the over/under at 10 years. The university can get far more value out of that land, right in the middle of the campus footprint. That's the part you're missing.

This is not just a "sports fan" / athletic department decision. The university would prefer to keep the academic portion of the campus contiguous, and they could put some great facilities in that footprint.

From the government perspective, this is a construction jobs boost to the local economy and is a good use of tax dollars, compared to a lot of other programs. It would certainly enhance the experience for everyone. The cost of the Houston stadium is very encouraging.

And from a fan's perspective, as unique as the Dome is, it could be a much better experience. Imagine how many people we might draw to games if you could actually park and comfortably get to the venue. As our fan base ages, this is not insignificant. We could draw an extra 5,000 easy if it were simply easier to get to football games, and the experience was first rate, with good seating, quality food and drink, wide concourses, luxury boxes, better bathroom facilities.

I think the right size is 45,000 for football (which is about what the seating would be in the current Dome if it were simply seats instead of benches). Have to have 27-30,000 for basketball. One person above posted about movable seating (better than our current bleacher set up, but similar - but with a press box and better camera support facilities, at the top, etc.), so we could create a more intimate basketball experience when we have the really big crowds.

It has been a horrible mistake the day it was built there, why make another one 50 times as ridiculous putting SU that far away from campus and completely wasting an opportunity to do something right. That stadium should have been downtown and anyone involved in it's construction said that putting it where it is now is a huge mistake.

In that case, why not just put the stadium in Liverpool or Solvay, just wow...

Wasn't the Zac Brown band a big draw last year? I remember hearing about it.

I'll leave the University's growth stuff to people that know more than me. OttoMets seems really plugged in and he has low expectations. In the past 10 years, Newhouse has grown, Whitman has a new home, the College of Law will soon have a new home, the school Faulk spent millions on will have a new home, new housing was built, and several athletic facilities, including the Dome were upgraded. I'm not sure there is a need (or even ability) for the University to continue proliferating the way you suggest. Interest rates are rising and the cost of education is spiraling. Somethings got to give. Couple that with SUNY Upstate being a dumpster fire...

As Jeremy noted, NY, Onondaga and Syracuse are all broke (and hemorrhaging population). Destiny USA was a scam. Attendance at the State Fair is down. Apathy abounds about the Chiefs and Crunch (and maybe even SU football). Syracuse is not a destination. This is not a "build it and they will come" situation. Cuomo couldnt find Syracuse on a map, and he wouldnt care if he could. Read about ALbany's convention center debacle for some insight into public sector projects upstate, and that's in the State's Capital. I really like Syracuse and enjoyed my time there, but it is a non-starter in the Capital Region.

I'm sorry, but i feel very strongly this will never happen. You guys are talking about more than just brick and mortar. Retractable roof; light rail; relocating infrastructure and business; continued cleanup of inner harbor; TM mentioned a rack railway for Pete's Sake.

Thank goodness the Dome is perfectly suitable for everything SU needs.

the only thing i could see that could maybe reverse the trend is if fracking is approved. Injection of young labor, new corporations with gobs of money, jobs, economical development, etc. But i think that ship has sailed as well.

Yes but the Dome has never lived up to its potential to have 6-10 huge acts a year.

you are correct in your statement. Some of the buildings up on the hill are very old and they need many mechanical upgrades. You just can't shut down some of these academic buildings with out a place for them to go. The dome is a very big footprint to build modern, state of the art academic facilities that some of the Donors want and still be on campus. I know that Syracuse wants in to all that is being spent around the state on the new Nano Technology in Malta and now Rome N.Y. This area fits in with Cuomo's new tax breaks of starting new business in the state that would be tax free for ten years on college campuses.

But that footprint is way too small down near Erie Blvd. site...Inner Harbor would good to go all out and the state does have some control of the lands there also

Matt. You nailed it.

Wow...talk about CNY defeatist mentality. The number 1 reason the area is losing population is jobs. This has the ability to enhance the community and create jobs. Should CNY just give up and admit defeat or fight to keep the young here?

Build a similar (Multi Purpose Dome - BBall, Football, Lax, possible convertible for Hockey, etc.)stadium to the dome on south campus, drop I81 to a street level boulevard and connect the city to the University with walking bridges over the traffic.

Yes but the Dome has never lived up to its potential to have 6-10 huge acts a year.

The Dome is a "tweener".

Winter concert acts that are designed for NBA arenas use a stage set-up that's too small for the Dome.

Summer acts prefer outdoor venues.

This is wrong. The dome is fine and people shouldn't be forced to pay for it. I hate this garbage
but who is going to stop them from doing it?

but I am much open to spending money like this on a college than a multi-billion dollar pro sports franchise who pay players a $100 million plus for a few years.

Everyone talks about the land where the Dome is being to so valuable. I would love to see the demolition costs to raze the dome so they could actually build there, aside from the cost of a new construction. Would be very interesting.
