That's what I'd have you believe! But I was a late bloomer. Slick enough but so money, I just didn't know it.

You're a big winner. I'm gonna ask you a simple question and I want you to listen to me: who's the big winner here tonight at the casino? Huh? Tee, that's who. Tee's the big winner. Tee wins.

Hey! I get to use this: :vomit:

I saw a tribute to Dean Smith yesterday. It emphasized what a terrific human being he was. It also showed him in practice, yelling at one of his players to shut up because he does the talking in practice, not them.
Telling a kid in "practice" to "shut up" is a polar opposite from screaming and coupling that with a face thats borderline maniacal on national television isn't the same thing. BTW how many times did Dean Smith get investigated by the NCAA? I like the very descriptive barf tag. I consider this very appropriate for those that defend Boeheim and their reason for doing that. "My god if we lose Jim Boeheim this program will dissipate to being a non factor. That my friend is or would not be possible or even probable

I found your comment about Dean Smith being investigated interesting because the academic fraud that's being investigated at North Carolina supposedly goes all the way back to when Smith was coaching. I doubt the NCAA will want to touch that!

When people wanted JB to retire in the late 2000's I did a study who when happened when the 25 winningest basketball and football coaches of all time retired. 84% of the time the next guy had a worse winning percentage.

Smith obviously gave them permission to film his practice, which means he knew it was going to be on TV.

I don't know what games people have been looking at ...BJ has no interest in defense and if you don't play defense for Boehiem you're not gonna play. I've never seen Boehiem as mad at a player as he was at BJ ...good thing it was a televised game or it might of gotten ugly... Patterson is getting playing time because his defense is so much better then Joesph's...I thing he might have a future here because of that.

His defense is better than Joseph's, but that doesn't make his defense good. JB has said "he's playing because there is nobody else". There's many more options next season with two guards coming in and more opportunity for G to play at the 2 or 1.

We've had a lot of players that struggled for years yet contributed later in their careers at SU. Some of those same players were rumored to be considering leaving and some did, but few left and moved on to better things. I hope BJ sticks it out and develops into what we need and want him to be. These kids make a big commitment to come here & play and we shouldn't be too quick to give up on them. Some of our most memorable seniors were very puzzling underclassmen. Hang in there BJ...
I'm not sure how many on this board have played college ball but I can say from experience that coaches can really get in your head and make you feel like crap and that you aren't any good. I don't agree with this coaching style and JB is notorious for doing this. That is why half the guys on the court play tight and are afraid to make mistakes. I think BJ has a lot of talent and I'm hoping he progresses next year and is a 7 to 8 point scorer per game.

I think he's just being honest and telling where you are in this level. That's Jim Boeheim's style of coaching.

Anyone who's played sports at just about any level knows one fundamental fact: The coach doesn't waste his time on players he doesn't think can improve. As a player, you're taught very young that if you're not playing and the coach isn't on you, it's time to worry because he doesn't think you can help the team. The coach's kiss of death to a player is ignoring him. Now, if you're playing all the time and not hearing it from the coach--Ennis last year--that's one thing, but sitting and getting ignored, well, either you might want to find another line of work, or the message is you're on your own to get better.

The fact that Boeheim is on BJ means he thinks the player has much, much, much more in him than he's currently showing. It's a good thing and all the other stuff about yelling at him in public, calling out players in press conferences, blah, blah, really is pretty silly. The point is, does the coach think the player can get better? If he does, the player gets the coach's attention, in whatever delivery format. If not, he doesn't. As for the delivery, if the player can't get used to hearing the message while dispensing with the format, he's got a huge problem because it doesn't get any easier at the higher levels, whether it's playing ball or holding down a job. Anyone who's played or had to hang in there with a tough boss knows that. Bosses typically don't yell at you anymore but they're not usually your friends and you'd better be ready to hear stuff from them you may not like.

Most of you seem to think of the coaching relationship as one of parent to child--it's got nothing, as in absolutely nothing, to do with that. The coach isn't your friend, he's not your mommy or daddy, he's the coach and his job is to get the most out of you he thinks is there. With BJ, obviously Boeheim believes he's got a lot there. Many kudos to BJ's dad, who obviously fully understands how this stuff works.

I don't think Boeheim yells at players and makes snarky remarks to strengthen the player. Likewise, when he threw his jacket off and stormed the court during the Duke game last year, I don't think it was to send a message that the refs needed to do a better job calling fouls. I believe he does those things because sometimes he reacts before he thinks of the consequences.

So a coach who's been on the job for 40 years just reacts before he thinks? Really?

I'm sorry, but that is downright stupid.

Even if he had firmly decided to leave, he still have to convince someone to give him an opportunity at the next location and mailing it in doesn't help him there.

There is nothing that I have seen with regard to BJ that would suggest he has mailed it in. Is he frustrated? I'm sure he is.

you have every right to judge what you see and form an opinion, as do I.

Yes in the heat of battle, competitive people lose their cool.

So you're saying that yelling at a ref over a bad call and yelling at one of your players over a bad play are the same?

You should think before you post.. JB has not done too bad over the years.

JB is first and foremost a basketball coach. The game is televised but he's trying to win games, not play to the media or the crowd in the gym or watching electronically. He has a team to create and is passionate about it, to the point he gets very direct with his players. He's a very bright man and has a low tolerance for fools and those that don't listen. He's frank to the point of being rude and incredibly competitive. He may not fit everyone's model of a nextgen basketball coach, but is a coach that does stand-up comedy when pressed, and not likely to become more politically correct.

He's a basketball coach and wants to finish his career that way. If you expect something different from him, perhaps your expectations need adjustment because he's going coach his way and leave when he's ready. I don't think he's full of himself, rather the opposite. He thinks his primary job is to coach basketball while many think his primary responsibility is to answer for SU to fans & media. Personally, I've worked with a lot of different groups of people and some of the most exceptional people I've worked with have been seemingly arrogant, rude, & a pain in the butt, but in reality were just more focused on their job than on social niceties. I like that he's a coach and not a PR guy, but know there are many that don't agree.

I am not debating for a minute that he is a great basketball coach. He absolutely is. My only point is that not everything he does is calculated. This includes the times he has yelled at players, made glib remarks and stormed the court.

Does this mean I don't want him as my coach? Of course, not. And I'm reasonably certain that the next guy won't be as successful as he is. But that does not mean that Boeheim is above criticism, certainly not on a message board.

Of course he's not above constructive criticism.. But you cross the idiot line when you say he needs to go. (not speaking about you)..
