Board Administrator Email To The Athletic Department

Few companies are progressive enough to listen to customers and make real changes. Most companies are filled with over-paid leadership who think they know best. SU has not done one thing to make me think they'd listen to any good ideas. You don't think Jake or Gross have already been pitched thousands of ideas? How many have come to light? Bet you can count them on one hand.
Regardless, a company shouldn't be angry that a customer is expressing concerns or making suggestions. Companies make real changes all of the time. Every time an automaker redesigns a car, customer surveys and market research play a large part in the changes. If companies in a competitive market don't listen to customers, they go out of business as the customers go elsewhere. If the university is too arrogant to take free advice from the people they're trying to sell to, they deserve to fail.

The land can't just be redeveloped. People paid for plots. Under the agreements, that payment is used to maintain the grounds of those buried there. If you are thinking they will somehow convince the management of the cemetery to dig up the remains and move them somewhere else so they can have more parking for the dome or to build a dome there, they won' so let's put it to rest (so to speak).
If you gave me the option to be buried under a new facility that would help Cuse or be buried at a plain old cemetery like everybody else, I know what I'm picking.

I think most here would want their ashes mixed with the mortar of the Dome.

This thread reminds me of something I did many many moons ago. It was for basketball and was titled "Bee's Six Point Plan". I sent it to 3-4 people at SU and got a couple of thank you's. It wasn't just a rant but was well thought out and presented (I thought). I'm having trouble remembering many of them but I do know over the next couple years most of them were implemented. Some of the old timers from back in the day on the AOL board(?) like Cherie, All4, Tom etc might remember.

I remember that. Wasn't Point #1 - Fire Boeheim?
And I think Point #2 was Give more access to Roger Springfield.

Nice suggestions.

I will go off the beaten path and compliment SU for doing a much better job this season of showing instant replays of close plays on the scoreboards. They don't do it all the time but they are doing a much better job on this front. Was really disappointed over the past couple of years after we got the new boards and they were just left blank or showed an ad right after a controversial play.

SU needs to understand that the biggest competitor they are up against trying to get fannies in the seats for home football and basketball games is television. Just about everyone these days has a great HDTV and an excellent setup for watching games at home. A significant number of people I know that follow SU football and don't go to the games tell me that the experience is better at home. They can see everything from there, see the replays done properly, get info on out of town scores, get food and beer much cheaper, etc. And they don't have to pay for a ticket.

So things like making sure the out of town scores are updated regularly, religiously diplaying replays of interesting plays, making sure fans have access to good quality food and drink are important. I love the idea of getting craft beers, especially locally brewed ones. Sell some Finger Lakes based local wines. Open up the concouse on the west side of the Dome on the 1st and 2nd levels, move Club 44 into the expanded area and do it right, with things like bathrooms in place. Have food courts and seating areas. Bring in local restaurants and feature regional specialities like chicken and riggies, salt potatoes, Utica Greens, spiedies, Dino BBQ, etc. These things all give the fans a reason to come to the Dome instead of watch the game on TV.

I have been lucky enough to have gone to a lot of live football games. I question whether people who believe they can see everything have actually been to a game. Unlike basketball in which the entire half court can be shown in one shot, during a football game a television viewer can only watch what the camera is focused on. Typically, this means you will be watching the quarterback and will not see the routes run by the receivers. On running plays, the television viewer may miss downfield blocking and certainly will not see what is happening on the opposite side of the field.

That being said, replays are important. I was at the MNF game last night and the screens show the play as it occurs and then will replay it several times from different angles. I have heard a rumor that the screen operator will not replay plays in which the opposing team may have cause to throw the red flag and will replay reversible plays for the Packers incessantly.

I was frustrated though regarding the lack of information about Aaron Rodgers condition and the lack of any wi-fi or a good a data signal for my smart phones. Due to the students reliance on smart phones, colleges need to make sure this is not an issue. It has been a couple of years since I have been able to get back to the Dome for any type of game, but does it have wi-fi? If not, does anyone know what the cost would be?

At the end of the day, though, winning is what is needed to bring people back to the games. The athletic department in my other alma mater was in the red until the football team began winning consistently in 1993. Now, for good tickets, not only do people need to pay for the price of the season ticket, they also need to make a donation.

Here's a recommendation. Why doesn't Syracuse start using social media and advertisement to create a buzz around its games? Its beyond me that we are still using a grass roots campaign to create excitement on saturday when we live in a world dominated by the possibilty of social media. It makes no sense

That was. Cool.

Of course it is easier to do when you are 7-0.

I think this is a great idea. If your seats are behind an endzone and the play is on the opposite end of the field you can't tell what's going on. And the whole thing about refs not wanting controversial calls replayed is BS.

Every play is live on the big screens at the dome.

Does SU give out free tickets when they know there is not going to be a sell out? Just to get people in there to buy food and drink. I work for a major employer in Syracuse and I don't remember ever getting free tickets. Our Rochester office gets free ticktets all the time. Rochester Amerks having a tough time filling the seats, we get a email saying we can have free tickets. The freaking Buffalo Bills did the same thing last year. Game against St. Louis no one cared about. Here's some free tickets. The only thing worse than giving out free tickets are empty seats. An empty seat isn't buying food and drink.

If the cemetary, or portions of it, are no longer for public use, there are state laws saying that after 75 years of non-operation (a period of time in which the next of kin all would be presumed to have died), then the land can be redeveloped. Oakwood Cemetary, or portions of it, seem like they are no longer in service. Land around the campus is obviously at a premium, so without moving the Dome, what options do you have?

Parking garages on all of the current lots. Costs some money but would add some parking..

Nah. There are strict laws about what can be done with cemeteries. I think state law requires the remains to be moved and it's extremely rare for that to happen. Oakwood is a historic landmark and nothing of the sort will happen with it simply to provide more parking for the dome. They would have to get relatives to consent, etc... good luck with that. Not sure where you are getting your 75 year rule.

Oh, good to know. I haven't had a chance to go since they put them in.

Agree. Oakwood is most definitely still in use and as xc84 says, it is a treasure. Was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, one of the most famous landscape architects ever, who also designed Central Park in the City. It is going to be a cemetery forever.

Here is a link to the various laws regarding cemeteries in NYS. Skim down to page 6 - Section 164 of General Municipal Law, regarding abandoned cemeteries. There actually is no 75 year waiting period in that particular statute, but you have to give public notice to heirs of the deceased, and other procedures must be followed. Point being you can redevelop cemeteries, as distasteful as you may find the thought, under certain circumstances.

While I am not a big fan of traditional burial and cemetary usage, I worry about the history lost if these are simply redeveloped.

It has already happened thousands of times in this country. Land is valuable. How many burial grounds from the 1700s and 1800s are still around? Not very many. Those that remain are usually tied to a church.

And Allied Chemical was dumping raw chemicals into Onondaga Lake for decades too. Doesn't mean we should continue the practice.

the Dome and the campus for that matter, are probably sitting on an Indian Burial Ground now.

im not for moving them, just creeps me out...but i can imagine the countless bottles of whiskey downed, as developers sat in Pubs overlooking the Queens Cavalry Cemeteries going 'how the can we build there??'

Not relevant. Oakwood is not abandoned or even close to that state. In fact, I bet there is considerable funding in place for it to be maintained for many years to come. However, even if it was abandoned, and the city would want to take it on (which would be nuts) , the remains would have to be moved to another cemetery. Point being, there is no way in hell Oakwood will be moved. Point being, Oakwood cannot be "redeveloped" by SU.

I doubt the whole oakwood relocation thing would ever happen especially with its history. But that type of thing is not unprecedented in Syracuse, the Brewster Boland brockway complex was built on the former site of St. Marys cemetery which had all residents moved to a new site which I believe is in Dewitt. Just a food for thought. If its for a parking lot I see no chance also we are living in a very different regulatory and politcal correctness era than 1964 when much of this took place.

It is unprecedented. Oakwood is a large and historically important cemetery. It is well maintained and on the National Register of Historic Places.
The cemetery you speak of was a long-neglected one. SU still had to move the remains to the newer St. Mary's in Dewitt (and I think St. Agnes) in order to build there.
