Boeheim's Army / TBT 2025

This is why I can't get into this tournament. There are so many Cuse basketball alumni, you can't build a team of just them?
Tried to get Tyler Ennis, but his new deal precluded him from playing. Still a good chance that Joe Girard is added but, as we’ve been told repeatedly, he’s not a PG.

6 of the 8 on the roster, plus the head coach, are Cuse alumni. Always the preference but to be competitive at the highest level in this tournament there is a need to fill in the gaps. PG was an obvious gap with very limited Orange options.

Exactly.

A lot of guys are no longer playing. Those who are still playing often use the Summer to be with their families or heal/rest from the rigors of whatever foreign pro league they are playing in. In addition, players change schools so much these days that players' affinity for SU isn't what it once was.

6 former Orange players (plus potentially others) is a step back in the right direction, so we should enjoy it while it lasts.

I also think that the TBT in general -- and I know we had the outlier year where we won the whole damn thing -- has shown that many of our more recent players aren't quite as good as we believe / that Boeheim coaxed a heckuva a lot of productivity from guys who were great system fits, but maybe not quite as good as we think they are.

I also think that the TBT is different -- you aren't looking to field a P4 college lineup, with two big guys. Waterbug guards who can take anyone off the bounce and mid size guys [like DJ Kennedy] who are versatile, can rebound / defend, and score at all three levels are the way to go -- and we don't have lots of players like that who fit into either category from the end of JB's tenure.

Hughes is interesting; he is probably the closest we've had over the last ~10 years of JB's tenure who is closest to the DJ Kennedy-archetype [maybe Battle, too]. Otherwise, the majority of our guards have been combos -- good players, but not the type who thrive @ TBT.

Very curious to see how we are going to defend teams with a lot of guys who can beat you off the bounce.

I hope Girard is our last guy. He would be fun ti watch in a TBT type setting. But probably the best addition would be an athletic defensive minded guard.
Agreed. Looks like we have 5 guys for the 4-5 spots. And 4 guys for the 1-3 spots. Ideally a point guard over 6 ft.

The make up now may force Jimmy B or Perkins into some 3 spot minutes. I think both better as 4’s. And if the 10th is not a pg, probably makes Hughes the backup pg. I think the better option would be another true pg, especially w Gilyard being small. They often decide this tournament as we saw the year we won, we had 2 good ones.

Likely to play a three-guard lineup:

Guard: Gilyard
Guard: Hughes
Guard: B. Boeheim
Forward: Perkins
Forward: Starkey/McCullough

Malachi first off the bench at the 2/3. McCullough/Starkey split, with Christmas and J. Boeheim seeing spot minutes. Do need another guard though.

I didn't bother watching any of it for the past few years, BA didn't have many Cuse guys. I'll watch this year again, more Cuse guys. As you said, "a step in the right direction."

Given the portal and graduation, you will recognize more SU guys on BA than you will on the actual SU basketball team when the season starts :)

This is unfortunately spot on. I really hope with the settlement that maybe there is a shift in kids staying out longer and rosters having some continuity and maybe 2-3 changes per team vs roster flips annually.

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Boeheim’s Army will open The Basketball Tournament July 19th at Onondaga Community College.

It will play another team from Central New York.

Boeheim’s Army, the top seed in the Syracuse regional, faces No. 8 Herkimer Originals at 6 p.m. The game will be televised by FS1.

Should Boeheim’s Army beat Herkimer Originals, it will face the winner of We Are D3 (No. 4) and Layne’s Hope (No. 5) at 8 p.m. July 21. Layne’s Hope features Syracuse-area players Jordan Roland and Lucas Southerland.

The No. 2 seed in the region is Stars of Storrs, a team of mostly Connecticut graduates.

I am going to the July 19 games. Never been before, pretty excited. Buddy was the main reason I finally bought tickets. Can’t wait to see him in Cuse script.
