Bracket Show

After MASH wasn't really a bad show.

This is more like The Walking Dead: World Beyond.

Where the main characters are so annoying you root for the zombies.

A show based around Klinger, Potter and Father Mulcahy? Let’s just give Nurse Kelly and Sgt Rizzo a spin-off. ;)

How about the year the bracket leaked out before the show? Fun times.

That was crazy! I think many here, including myself, thought we were out, especially after losing to Pitt for the 3rd time that year in the ACC Tourney. I thought the leak had to be bogus, but not long after, we were in and Dancin' just as indicated. It was glorious! We go on and beat Dayton as a 10 seed in the opening round...to that amazing come back W against UVA in the Elite Eight and off to the Final Four.

Ha - my first thought was when one of the board staples found out we didn't make it back in 07 or whenever that was...

And then a few of us sat there in the selection thread waiting for the inevitable meltdown.

If it had not been released in advance we were actually in the final 8 teams to get revealed, and we were squarely on the bubble.

Guarantee there's a quip about not worrying about debating the merits of Cuse getting a bid or not.

Remember the one year they released the teams in alphabetical order? Maybe the worst decision made in television history

I think that year there was an upset in the A10 championship which stole a bid, and then we had to wait for that nonsense on the show.

Longest wait between our last game and Selection Sunday ever.

Would have been painful and agonizing.

St Bonaventure made it, and everyone couldn't figure out if St Bonny was ahead of Syracuse.

Turns out they were listed as "Saint Bonaventure".

Syracuse came 1-2 teams later.

Otto is channeling his inner Jerry Reed in this new Nissan Commercial.

That was horrible, and SU was a bubble team too. I remember not seeing Notre Dame or somebody as they rolled through and I knew we were in. Anticlimatic, a modern day Heidi Bowlesque decision to do it that way.

I create a bubble team "tracking sheet" of shorts as the field is being announced to help me keep track of what is happening. I update it as teams get announced. It is helpful if an off the radar pick is made

It looks like it will come down to 5 teams for 1 spot - Rutgers, Notre Dame, SMU, Oklahoma, Xavier.

That being said the committee often has an off the radar selection or omission. So my tracking list ends up being fairly long and inclusive:

So 16 schools for 7 spots -- some of these are very likely or highly unlikely, but as I said some off the radar picks get made

So as we start 16 teams, 7 spots, % to get in per the bracket matrix

Davidson 100%
Miami 97%
Indiana 94%
Texas A&M 94%
Michigan 91%
Wyoming 89%
Rutgers 55%
--------
Notre Dame 54%
SMU - 42%
Xavier - 36%
Oklahoma - 26%
Wake Forest - 8%
VCU - 5%
North Texas - 5%
BYU - 3%
Dayton - 2%

And a look back at some very surprising omissions in prior year. In fact each of the last 3 years there has been a team at 90% expectation rate missing. The last 2 years it seems the committee has actually been friendlier in the last spot to mid-majors. That was not the trend pre-2016.

2021 - Louisville 92% (replaced by Wichita St)
2019 - TCU 93% (replaced by Belmont)
2018 - USC 93% (replaced by Syracuse, who was only at 12%!!)
2016 - St. Bonaventure 86%
2015 - Colorado St 91%
2015 - Temple 90%

Some surprising teams to make it
2018 - Syracuse at 12%
2016 - Tulsa at 1% (1 person out of 186 had them in)
2015 - UCLA at 10%

Based on what has happened in prior years there will more likely than not be a surprise omission. Although I have them in on my bracket, if I have to pick one surprise miss it would be Michigan.

And if I have to pick a surprise pick to get in - North Texas!
