Brent Axe finally says it

i don’t know which position coaches are responsible for which special teams unit. But Dino has said a few times that’s how they’ve divided it up. Instead of one assistant being responsible for all special teams he’s got an assistant being responsible for a unit. I’m guessing but for example Monroe is responsible for the kick off team.
Oh, I thought you were referring to a separate kicking specialist not part of the 9 coaches.
The dedicated part of your original post threw me off.

If we have a tight ends coach, we could let him go. Just have the right ends work with the line.
We don’t even use the TE’s anyway.

Make Ferri the ST coach and have Coach Samuel WR/TE with a grad assistant or whatever.

The coaching is holding this team back

And it's frustrating

By my count, Dino left 10 points on the table at the end of the 1st half - 3 from the blocked extra point / safety on the recovery - his fault for not having a special teams coach. And then the loss of a TD opportunity, to have to settle for a FG again for clock mismanagement - and then miss the FG.

Of those 10 points, 6 are directly on Mr. Groza.

And yet we still won! Shrader played quite a game, and made the throws that he had to. That's probably how we should look at his passing for now. He threw some bad passes that are likely to get picked off by another opponent, but aren't we due a little luck? He made gutty throws. I saw him check down to his second receiver several times. He got so many third down (and fourth down) conversions.

Quite a finish with that bomb. I really didn't think we were going to do it, with the way that time was melting away. That last 20-30 seconds of the game seemed like they lasted for about 10 minutes!

I don't like when coaching is conflated with game management. Yes, the game management has been terrible but that's like 5% of what a HC does. It is a very important part of being a HC of course. The kids are playing hard and are put in a position to make plays, and isn't that what good coaching does?

I want Dino here next year because assembling a good team that plays hard is the most important thing a coaching staff can do. Through all the setbacks this team has not quit, and the head coach deserves credit for that.

Well said. I would add that the offensive game calling has gotten better as they have chosen and practiced more specific plays that suit Shrader and Tucker as a tandem. I like how Courtney Jackson, Queeley and Alford are becoming more regular contributors.

They were pretty good at both run blocking and pass protection today. I know Va Tech stopped Tucker in the second half, but they couldn't contain Shrader, too. We still had 3 procedure penalties that I recall, but it seemed like progress. More than 500 yards is a good job in my book.

What’s Bud Poliquin think of the Captain of those brash football playing whiz bang minions?!

No, we’ve had plenty of issues on special teams this year. Return penalties have been bad. We’ve had multiple blocking breakdowns leading to blocked xtra points and punts. I think we had some organizational penalties earlier this year…two illegal formations on punts against Rutgers I think.

There are lots of reasons kickers miss kicks. Mostly it’s a bad swing. But kickers notice bad snaps, undue pressure from the edge, players racing on and off the field at the last minute and of course laces facing the wrong way

I don’t think people truly grasp how delicate the timing is on every kick…and how important repetition and trust are. It bothers me how late Smzyt begins his kicking motion. He’s almost waiting to see the hold completed before starting his approach - that’s too late. He didn’t do that his first coupe of years I don’t think.

our kicking unit does not look like they’ve had a ton of reps together. I don’t think Smzyt is comfortable out there for more reasons than confidence in his kick swing.

having a coach who is held responsible for this would improve organizational matters….which is where the problem starts.

your last sentence about “kickers missing kicks not being special teams” couldn’t be more wrong.
Great post. Dino deserves the criticism. His game management has been horrendous and has cost the team 2 games.
Special teams are a hot mess.
On a positive note he hired an excellent DC and OL coach.
The kids are playing their arses off for him
Tommy and Taj being gone has cleared the deck for this to be Shraders team
And this is Huge yesterday's win takes the heat off JW and provides him with a legitimate excuse/reason to give this staff another year.
I believe that regardless how the rest of the season goes a year from now we will look back and realize how important yesterday's win was for SU footballs future.
Shrader was beyond brilliant he willed the team to win and with the win and the fashion in which he led it set SU up for a very good next two years.
Yesterday was Billy F Huge.

Just watched that extra point highlight. McKinley had possession and then fumbled when he hit the ground. Play should’ve been blown dead. Why no review?

im sure dino has voiced concerns to his boss which probably reports it to acc office but at that point most of the time it gets put in the shredder. college refs should be held to a standard like performance review like workers in real world
I think it’s more than that. I just don’t think Dino has the respect with the officiating crews or hierarchy that makes the decisions. He also doesn’t strike fear into these crews that he would call them out publicly for this BS without fear of punishment.

Of course the coaching is holding this team back.

Brent isn't wrong.

Agree the timing sucks. But Dino's disastrous end of half 1...which very well could have cost is this have cost us this game...shouldn't get ignored because the team rallied to win despite him.

But the timing sucks.
How does a team rally despite its head coach. There is no proof of this weird mythology

You've never heard of QBs changing the play that the coach sends in? Happens all the time.
Shrader looked like he ad-libbed a couple of those plays in the 2nd half.

I look for all the cuse content I can get but I’ve given up watching Axe. Nothing new to share and from this is sounds like he’s trying and failing to stay trendy with the fanbase.

Axe gets a pass from me after his Don Corleone impersonation. I find Nate Mink's face very punchable though.

Brent Axe is and always has been a dork. I can't think of a guy who possibly adds less to a conversation. I'm amazed he's maintained employment all these years.

Dork? What we in junior high?

Brent Axe gets ratings by echoing the common fan’s sentiment/voice.

Most fans, most notably myself, are reactionary and dumb.

I don’t blame talking heads and radio personality’s for takes that age like milk. Mine age worse typically.

He’s gonna be the same guy getting casuals listening to espn radio riled up and ready to buy tickets later this week

Pretty sure they just read here and regurgitate our takes
