Brian Ward Fired

We are:

102 - scoring offense
86 - total offense
96 - first downs
79 - 3rd down conversions
123 - red zone conversions

Defense has been up and down all year, depending on the game. Offense has been terrible all year. These are Grob numbers. I realize DB is more directly tied to the offense than he is with the defense, so it's easier to find fault by some posters with the defense. But the numbers are what they are. I can see the offense is terrible and I can quantify it as well.

There are many fish to fry, along with Ward. So as I said, I don't disagree with letting him go but at this point he seems to be a scapegoat when the offense is one of the worst in the country.
But there are fundamental issues why the offense is struggling:
- The OLine is atrocious
- QB is hurt / possibly overrated

The defense has no excuses for historically bad play. NONE.

That’s why Ward needed to go

since alexander left the program and bergeron became starting ol the offense has been better is all i was saying

No depth on the DL, Cordy having to even play. Excuses can always be made for why being crappy on one side of the ball means the coordinator has to go but being crappy on the other side of the ball are just fundamental issues that are okay.

I don't disagree with that at all. I think Bergeron has played really well for being in his position with no experience. I don't think we really disagree that much, most likely. I will say, why weren't changes to the OL made or tried earlier. Especially in games like HC to see how players would do? That is also on the coaches on the offense. The failure to make any adjustments as the season was crumbling is very concerning.

Defense was supposed to carry the team this season. It has been as much bad as good. A performance like yesterday has to carry consequences and you can’t fire the team.

Ward will land a position coaching job for next season. It’s not like these guys go hungry when they’re let go.

A good start to addessing this program’s collapse this season by Dino. Would expect to see several more of e staff replaced by January.

Kendall as OC
Ash as DC

Spend the money

What’s DJ Durkin up to these days, is he still in college coach purgatory?

Any other successful DCs that turned HC and it didn’t work out?

Other random names of smaller school DCs who seem to be having success:

Brian Borland - UB
David Reeves - UAB
Clayton White - WKU
Ted Roof - App State, but he’s been all over

Charlie Strong might be out also right?

I had a chance to talk with Coach Ward several times. Kind of quiet and reserved but friendly and heart felt. I think he is a quality person. Wish him the best in his future endeavors. Agree that Bowling Green is a likely landing spot for him.

just guessing here but back around the holy cross game the teams coaching staff probably still thought heckel would be back this year so making changes at that point probably not a need or at that point they didnt feel bergeron was ready to play?

Durkin helped kill a kid. Now that may have been a career booster for Brian Kelly somehow but no way in hell we will/should hire a POS like Durkin. Since you are Chip, if you were being sarcastic, um, nevermind

I would be a lot more hopeful about this firing if I was convinced it was Babers' decision and not Wildhack's. I am not entirely confident in Dino's ability to hire and oversee a staff and to make difficult staff decisions when necessary. Coaches are often fatally insecure, valuing familiarity and allegiance over challenge and performance, and Dino might not have escaped this flaw.

dino has replaced his DC before...

What makes you think this wasn't Babers' call?

Firing Ward now means we have the chance to pick up defense coordinators dismissed before the end of the season. Smart move. Someone was going to get axed at the end of the season anyway, might as well do it now - especially if there is someone on our radar as a replacement who is available.

I’d imagine the offensive side of the ball will see someone(s) ushered out as well. Why not now? If there are 2-3 people being let go. I imagine the offense would suffer badly (even worse?!) in that instance. And maybe their desired replacement(s) are currently employed & would wait for the off season to explore a move.

Just speculation, I’m probably the least informed person on this board.

Have you read through the thread. Kim McCloud was his DC at EIU and BGSU. Then he hired Ward but made McCloud his Asst. HC.
