Brian Ward Fired

Had to do something. No point running off players who were part of the 10 win season.

Stanard has a pretty good resume to step in and stop the bleeding.

Also I think the next 2 games are pretty winnable. Wasn't Louisville in worse shape this time last year than we are now? Wake will be tough but if we are coming off 2 straight wins that could be a fun one.
Love the optimism, not a chance we win next two, I will happily gorge myself on crow on this board if it happened.

To do what?

I thought Dino might do something to Ward based on his post game radio interview. He said something to the effect that players made mistakes as well as the scheme. He doesn’t usually say things like that.

you said offensive was bigger problem than d. The d was supposed to be the strength of the team with a bunch of returning players. Thats a bad sign for d to give up so many points

It is but as bad as the D was saturday the offense has been terrible the whole season. The D was solid last year overall. To me there are bigger glaring weaknesses in the coaching staff then Ward, especially to let go the DC before the season is over. I don’t disagree with the decision at all.

there is progress being made on offense, while the defense is going backwards

he’s a very good defensive coach. DBs at PSU and da Bears. DC at Miami, Fl and Ohio St.
And a pretty decent judge of talent / recruiter

D has not kept us in games. They have been ok against some bad teams and terrible against good ones.

Thank you. "The defense is not the problem" narrative is terribly misguided, IMO.

The coaching fraternity is an old boys network, so I'm sure that Ward will land on his feet somewhere. Best of luck to him.

We are:

102 - scoring offense
86 - total offense
96 - first downs
79 - 3rd down conversions
123 - red zone conversions

Defense has been up and down all year, depending on the game. Offense has been terrible all year. These are Grob numbers. I realize DB is more directly tied to the offense than he is with the defense, so it's easier to find fault by some posters with the defense. But the numbers are what they are. I can see the offense is terrible and I can quantify it as well.

There are many fish to fry, along with Ward. So as I said, I don't disagree with letting him go but at this point he seems to be a scapegoat when the offense is one of the worst in the country.

Perhaps Bowling Green

Ya think?

It was an unprepared defense. Maybe there’s more to the story than Ward as to what happened yesterday. But I’m not surprised that he took the fall.

He’s the DC in the record books for some of our worst performances of all time. Unfortunate, but true.

I’m curious where we go from here.

Yep. Worst 4 yards allowed games - and two of those were against Wake and BC. Yikes...

One thing I did like about Shafer was when he was the DC here. His defenses were killer. If we could get a coach that can run a system like that...players love playing in systems like that as well. Blitzes galore, QB is consistently on his ass, top run defenses in the country year in and year out. We would just need DBs to improve. I’m all for an aggressive, attacking defense rather than what we run now.
Shafers nutty approach to defense was enjoyable. Similar to Pitts defense. Blitz and blitz some more. I think even Babers couldn't deal with the 3 man rush zone coverage on 3rd and long.
