Bronco Mendenhall

great article one can take well beyond the football and football coach world. Can't help but like the guy as he's such an anomaly in the sport at his position. Think Dino has many of those attributes as does his program now (just watch the interviews with his kids), which is why I've always liked him and the overall culture he's created here. Interject some winning football into the mix and wow, yeah, sign me up.

Dino has a lot of coaching life left in him but Tony White might be a nice succession plan.
do you go with Coach Beck and offense or White and defense... hmm coach just left and the decision is between a young up and coming offensive coach or a well known defensive coordinator. Where have I seen this soap opera before?

I am afraid if he gets back into coaching he might steal OCRA and QBCJB...
Did he do enough to land a good P5 job? I mean he should be linked to every bad one but BYU right now is better than it was under him and UVA was in the easy half of the ACC.

Gotta hope they like Dino though because this is a concern. Mendenhall would be a pretty safe hire for Nebraska.

That ESPN article, which was really well written and worth reading (nice find MSOrange), certainly implies he is thinking about coaching again some day.

Interesting to see how he has become friends with fellow good guy Clark Lea.

Agree, if he gets a HC job, it is very likely he will be calling Coach Anae and Coach Beck. Bronco is only 56. Those guys would likely have jobs longer if they went with him than stayed with Dino. Of course, the chance to be a HC would probably happen sooner at Syracuse.

I think we want to root for BYU to do well. Could see them reach out to Bronco if they need to make a change and it would be really hard for anyone on his old staff, pretty much all BYU people, to turn him down then.

Give me Tony White all day

Beck isn’t even an OC yet so we’re not quite there. But I hear you lol.

That would be tough and real cutthroat since Bronco called Dino about Anae and Beck.

Sitake's locked in at BYU.

He won 70% of his games at BYU and has 135 career wins.

Yes, Bronco has done enough to land a good P5 job.

You wonder if schools will be nervous about him stepping down again in a few years

Eh, maybe.

Bronco is kind of a weird dude. He does things his way.

To his credit, his way works a lot better than most other coaches.

Shafer flashbacks. Don't hire the defensive head coach to "keep things together" hire the young offensive mind as the head coach and roll the dice. Just like we should have hired Hackett we should hire Beck over White if it ever came to that.

I don't care what side of the ball they are on as long as they're good program managers with the right systems and philosophies. If you're a defensive guy you hire good offensive assistants. If you're an offensive guy (as you suggest) then you hire good defensive assistants like Dino has.

At the end of the day, the head coach has to put a good staff together for what will work at Syracuse or you could do what Shafer did, hire all your buddies and talk about the gold old days in the MAC and drink beers together. Shafer was a decent DC but such a hack as a HC.

hiring all of your buddies and drinking beers together sounds like a lot of fun!
