Buddy is Top 5 in NCAA in Made Threes

guarantee marek has crossed mid court more than buddy. that speaks to handle. a good thing to have.

There are some fair criticisms of Buddy. I wish he was a better rebounder and defender. I’m hoping he continues developing there for the next two years. I also think he should be playing 30-35 minutes instead of 40 every night.

But it really can’t be disputed that the kid has exceeded expectations. He’s shooting 40% from 3 with a high volume of attempts, many of them difficult, deep shots. And his ability to take the ball to the basket has vastly improved recently.

I’m excited to see how he continues to develop the next 2 1/2 years.
I bust on the rebounding, 40 minutes thing and do think he shoots a little too much, but I think your take is dead on and I completely agree.

if i was to post 2 years ago buddy boeheim is coming to syracuse and is going to lead us and the entire ACC in fg attempts what would your thoughts on the state of the program be ? (he's like only 10 shots shy.)
don't get me wrong the lad shoots it rather well. but is that who we've become ? 3 point chuckers ?

And therein lies my issue with hitching our wagon to Buddy...a high minute SG with very little versatility is problematic at this level without a much, much, much more dynamic PG.

I am curious what happens next season. But a tad frightened.

who should we hitch our wagon to?

i'll just read that as last. there's a lot more to shooting guard than just shooting.

But the point of the original post was about Buddy’s excellent shooting, but you were not going to let that stand, eh?

some of those guys were point guards or combos. Scoop, Triche, Dion and Gillon? You expect Buddy to handle the ball like them? I don’t think Buddy is any worse than Cooney, but behind Rautins. Better than White tho.

better than white ? at this point of his career i'd put buddy in the matt roe , marius janulis category. 3 point specialist.

better ball handler than White. You brought up ball-handling, remember?

LOL. buddy shoots 2 and you ask if i watch the games.

(which thanks to ACCN i can't usually but i know where the corn grows.)

What? Buddy can put the ball on the floor and get to the basket. He can back his man down and shoot over them. Janulis and Roe didnt do that. Those guys were shooting 3‘s 70% of the time. Buddy 60%. Buddy is not just a 3 point shooter. Turn on a game sometime. You‘ll learn a lot.

And he's only recently displayed this kind of scoring versatility. I'd expect his game will continue to evolve in this direction as he gains more confidence.

Highest number of 2-pt FG attempts per game in a Syracuse uniform:

Roe - 3.3 per game, 88-89 (his junior year)
Janulis - 2.6 per game, 97-98 (his senior year)
McNamara - 5.2 per game, 05-06 (his senior year)
Rautins - 1.6 per game, 09-10 (his senior year)
Cooney - 4.7 per game, 14-15 (his junior year)
Boeheim - 5.5 per game, this year

lottery picks derrick coleman and billy owens also avg'd less minutes than buddy this season.
pearl was around 33 per.

I see you're intent on working every one of your tired themes into this thread.

As for this one, context is important. In those years, SU won a large number of games quite handily, so players like that often watched much of those games from the bench.

Owens averaged 38 minutes per game in his junior season, 36 minutes per game in his sophomore season. Saying he averaged less minutes than Buddy is not correct.

But even if he did - and for others, like Coleman, who averaged fewer minutes - there are a bunch of reasons why that is/was the case. Blowouts and foul trouble likely impacted their minutes played.

I’m less concerned about the offense than you are - since the offense is significantly better this year than it was during the last two seasons, when we featured a more athletic, but poorer-shooting 2-guard.

My concern is more on the defensive end - need to see improvement from the guards and from the bigs for us to get back to where we would all like to be.

That trade off always existed - I do hate the thought that we just transitioned from, "man, we lost ugly...," to, "eh, I like rooting for this group, we lose fun."

That fun tends to dissipate against more athletic teams - luckily our schedule has opponents of that nature in shorty supply. If the enjoyment is that we can route the **** out of mid-majors, that's not an overall positive IMO. The one weapon we had was that we sucked, but our defense could throw off other power teams in the tourney. It also kept games against crap teams close - but now, I'm not sure what we have other than losing pretty. Which is pretty much Notre Dame's philosophy on basketball.

Again, very curious on next year and how the rotation shakes out, but having a PG/SG combo of this ilk, if the minutes continue, is going to be problematic IMO. I suppose if it balances out and we can get the defensive kicked back up - we're okay, however, in spite of the glorious numbers we're going to see on scoring efficiency I think we're going to have issues.
