Class of 2023 C Owen Freeman (IL) Portal from Creighton

Isaac Traut was not better than Freeman. That guy stinks. Again, Creighton was awful. The perimeter guys were particulary bad.
Isaac Traudt is horrible on defense, agree 100%. He is an above average 3 point shooter, outstanding three point shooter at home. Creighton was terrible as a team on defense except for DIx the Iowa transfer who was by far the best player on the team. The Center was Green who is 6’7” but was scrappy despite being overmatched but it was the only option. Inside guys were worse than perimeter this year.

I will say this, it would be nice knowing that more big time programs were after him. Butvth wen the price would higher too

Haven’t really seen him connected to anyone except Auburn, us and STL. I feel like if STL really wants him they’ll get him but he could very well be there for the taking for Syracuse.

I have heard what we have offered him. It is a lot.

So safe to say we don’t share OmahaCuse’s opinion of him.
I would be fine with him. At Iowa he scored in double figures every game he played, shot 60% and averaged 6.5 rebounds. His season ended late January due to injury. He would be more than serviceable as center and give us an option to play 15 minutes a game (and more if he earned it). I trust in Gerry and trust in the team he is building. Effort will be demanded and is no negotiable.
Cuse!

I watched the shortened game of Iowa State vs Creighton. I gather Freeman was at somewhere close to 75 percent healthy. He clearly was favoring his leg, but still played and was effective in his minutes.

Based on the one game I’m not seeing where he’s unplayable. Lots of tape of Jasen Green getting cooked by Joshua Jefferson. The Creighton perimeter guys really struggled on defense.

Freeman scored 9 points, with 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a block in just 23 minutes. They were worse with him on the bench. Looks like he has an extremely soft touch and a nice little hook shot. The lift clearly wasn’t there with the leg, but he was never out of position. There was more opportunity to get him the ball, but the Creighton perimeter players spent a lot of time chucking.

Going to see if I can find more tape, but there’s definitely talent to work with if he’s healthy. Syracuse will have much better defenders at the 1-4 positions than Creighton had this past year.

Oye, I’m deep into Creighton tape and two thoughts I have are Dix is a gunner and Green can’t guard 4’s let alone centers.

So watched a bunch of different clips and game segments. What I take for him defensively is you can’t leave him on an island. He does better if ball pressure and perimeter defense stays true and he’s not constantly having to guard without weak side help or some pressure being put on the ballhandler. I think it’s fair to say that won’t be an issue this year with this team.

He fights hard on the block, is not always perfectly in position and some of his challenges at the rim are awkward. He had a nose for rebounds and finishing downlow and an array of moves that working with AO could help him polish. He fits what you want in a post presence to take advantage of a favorable matchup or to simply play inside out with. I’ve seen no tape or segments of these games where he is unplayable. Nothing resembling dry rubs post D.

Was thinking same thing with having AO working with him.

Against Nebraska the Creighton perimeter players shot them out of any chance at winning. It was 15-2 to start. Freeman got position a few times, but never got the ball. Lots of chucking from the outside.

He again was laboring his leg. I imagine he rushed back because of the amount of money he was getting, but in this one he never was given a chance to make an impact in this game. Overall he looks like he may have been a bad fit for what McDermott tries to do on offense.

My hunch from Omaha’s early comments were he simply ran foul line to foul line on O for Iowa and finished breaks to rack up points on Fran M’s system. His Creighton highlights don't seem much different. He is active on O, but not dynamic. Arinze can refine his moves, but he looks to be “old school” by nature.

In short, a better Tasmin Goodrick is my comparison. If that fits what Gerry wants to do then let him take a shot if it doesn’t break the bank.

He’s not your modern 3-ball shooting, rim running gazelle. However, surrounded by active perimeter players in motion that can move a defense to enable him to get 1-1 post opportunities and then feed him or kick it back out would be the value, I guess.
