Carl Nassib

As Scooch pointed out, we have made progress in so many areas of life and in sports in general, but the NFL seems like something of a final frontier for an individual being free to be who they are.

This took a lot of courage for Carl. Tons of respect.

There have been gay athletes in every sport since time immemorial. It really sucks when segments of society can't accept reality and tries to impose its own version on everyone else. And, yes...I could purposely derail here and go political, but I won't.
Suffice to say the more people are shown support, encouraged to stand up, and speak truth to power, the better off we all will be.

Just over 24 hours ago, Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib made an announcement that had the football world showing an outpouring of love and support.

Nassib became the first active NFL player to announce that he is gay. Immediately following his announcement, he heard from fans, other NFL players and plenty of other sports personalities celebrating his announcement.

While their words were great to see, many fans opened up their wallets to show support as well. Whether donating to the Trevor Project – which Nassib raised awareness for – or buying his jersey, fans showed their love for the Raiders defensive end.

In fact, they showed so much support that Nassib had the highest-selling jersey across the Fanatics network on Monday and Tuesday, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

In many other walks of life, this isn't news. Unfortunately as progressive as sports have been in several areas, the culture around male s e xuality has been toxic for too long. Let's hope that changes, and this is part of it.
Your first line reminded me of a story. My former associate (and my wife’s cousin) was applying to a SUNY school to become a full time professor. He gave my name as a reference. After my call with school I called to tell him how it went. He said he was afraid they were going to go with a minority (he’s a white male). I said, “but John, you’re gay.” He said they told him that doesn’t count anymore.
As hard as it is to believe within the state hiring system, merit won out, and he got the job.

I'm really glad this is the case today. Gives me hope in the country when that's been lacking in some areas lately.

Does anyone believe the team he plays for, and the city they are now in, played into the overwhelming support he's been given? I'm asking would this have played out the same way if he played for Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Buffalo, or one of the other 'blue-collar working' towns?

I honestly don't have an opinion either way, it's just a discussion point. And I'm hoping the answer is yes, it would have been exactly the same (in case you were wondering).

It's kind of sad that someone should have to announce their sexual orientation because it shouldn't matter one bit but good for him.
