Chance Westry Transferring to Syracuse

Watched a practice recently...best performer was Cuffe and it wasnt close, multiple steals, good def, led fast breaks well ànd beat his man multiple times from top of the key and dunked on whoever was left down there at least 3 times. If I was Cuffe I would be pissed but what do I really know...nada.
Naheem was the next standout performer. Moving well, blocks, rebounds, solid defense and a couple nifty offensive moves.

Read this and memories of hearing about Terrance Roberts in practice his freshman year popped into my brain. Boeheim said he might be our best player. I was psyched to read about it and thought we found our next DC. Then he got into the games and it was like he'd never played organized basketball before.

Not meant to be a direct comparison (TR had a decent career and injuries got him) other than another memory I had of a reading about a player in practice apparently being a stud compared to what I saw in games.

They are playing against out guys, remember. There is always the possibility that: 1) it was an anomaly, and/or 2) there are off court reasons they are not playing. No

Even if it is "playing against our guys", just like a game of pickup in the park, you can tell who's zooming who. Players know who is playing well.

Yeah we've seen Cuffe in a decent amount of game action, and I can't say he's done much to have me clamoring for him getting more minutes. He's a plus defender, for sure, but he's a tweener at this level, which isn't ideal.

But Carlos is falling flat on his ass. Yes, we want to give guys time to adjust, but Cuffe and Naheem really need to be playing 5-10 minutes each, just to address our obvious shortcomings.

I don't disagree with that premise. I was more speaking to the fact that just because he may look like the best player on the team in practice, that clearly has not translated to actual gameplay.

You act like I want to add 2 more players to a 25 win team. If there are people who can help on the bench, why wouldn't you play them? That makes no sense.
Yeah I can’t stand the “red has been pinching the lineup in these close games to start the season that’s why You haven’t seen some of these guys” takes. We’ve looked like complete against three sub-150 net teams. what is pinching the lineup doing if the lineup isn’t performing to begin with? You could make the complete opposite argument; we need to open up the rotation because the guys playing in it right now aren’t cutting it.

Be careful about what you post on here about practice. People will hang on to it like grim death and then give you a piece of their mind like you’re responsible when the team doesn’t play well. I shared on here about the couple practices and Melo Madness that I went to and was overly optimistic at the defensive intensity. Welllll 3 games in they can’t cover somebody’s grandma. I know what I saw is very similar to what you saw and hence why patience is running thin already bc I thought this team was going to be special on both ends and they still might be, but they are struggling to find right lineups right now. But thank you for your input.

And PS Naheem was incredible at Melo Madness. Eddie was moving 100mph too. But 1+1 doesn’t always equal 2. I wish it did

You think Red isn’t doing this calculus?

He has too many guys in the rotation and is missing the right mix of guys on the court at the same time. He is already going to add Chance when ready. Eddie was fantastic in the last game and we really couldn’t afford to go to whatever Naheem brings. He can’t even get Petar much run.

Eddie moving 100mph compared to Naheem? Lol

Chance is shown in multiple pics on Instagram practicing and scrimmaging as of 2 hours ago…
I hope your right because even at 70% he could be better then some of the players getting major minutes. And that would give Red the ability to sit any of the starters who weren't playing defense.

We have 87 guys in the rotation as it is and we want to add 2-3 more? At some point you have to get you 7-8 set which Red has not gotten there with
JAB taught me 6 and a half is perfect u less you play a 6 OT game.

I didn’t think much of Cuffe last year. I’d be shocked if he was the best second guard option after JJ, let alone the best performer on the team. Like what’s going on here?

My brother was with me and he really loves to disagree with anything and àlmost everything I say, even if I really know he agrees, and have a debate.
On our way home after the practice, I brought what I said here up...he totally agreed ànd that literally never happens. He said he was very impressed with Cuffe mostly.
We ride to the games together and on our way home he always says how right I was about Cuffe & NM and how shocked he is neither is playing...No joke or exaggeration.
In my opinion it is bonkers, to see our specific struggles and to witness 2 players that are not playing thriving at our weaknesses, blows my mind.
I dont care if it was just 1 3hour practice, the dudes made it happen better than everyone else, give em minutes and see what happens.
I mean coach said hes testîng rotations..?

But what do I know?
or is there somethîng else goîng on?
Somethîng doesnt seem right to me
JB’s philosophy was to play well in practice and then he’d try you in the game. I can’t imagine Red is any different. When were you at practice? A few weeks ago or more recently?

I think Naheem should definitely play as a backup defensive center, and I think he will against bigger teams. I have no idea what to think about Cuffe. He’s got good athleticism and shot the ball ok in his limited minutes last year.

He could do simple math and see the total we've beaten bad teams by and see there is a major issue.
How about we work Chance into the lineup, reduce reliance on Carlos and see where we’re at first? If you change all the variables it might wind up worse.

I’m not convinced this team is bad or not talented. I think they lack the right flow of guys and leadership right now

Absolutely true. If you are fortunate enough to to see practice, drawing conclusions from what you think you see is dicey. A lot of these guys - even going way, way back - look great in practice going up against each other. But that doesn't always translate to the games. I think people would be very surprised at how well a lot these guys shoot in practice for example.

Coaches are aware that you never really know what you have until you see these guys perform in games over time.

I'm hoping that JJ got a boost of confidence after the last game, and he and the rest of the team understand he is THE leader. And with that, he becomes a more vocal leader.

They hired that analytics guy. Hoping they can comb through the +/- numbers and how effective certain lineup combos are to find the right mix.
