he's out recruiting today it sounds like per Bailey - good to see he isn't wasting any time...

Why do you say this? Pasqualoni was great with Rogers and blew with Deleone. The HC is the top executive, not the vice president of finance. Whoever the HC is, offensive or defensive, his success will be linked to his hires and our offense will be run by a guy we aren't trying to hire this week.
That was true 20 years ago. Not anymore.

I agree on an Offensive HC. But, I don't hate the thought of Ash. The thing about bright, young and innovative guys... They typically know bright, young and innovative guys.

The thing about hiring an offensive guy as HC is that he would be implementing his offensive system and finding an OC to execute on that vision. The benefit there is that if the OC leaves, or needs to be removed, then the system remains and all the recruiting that has been done for it is not a waste of time.

The more I think of what Shafer did the more perplexed I become. The guy outsourced his O to McDonald, which required a different recruiting strategy than what was done under Marrone. And then he fired McDonald and hired Lester, who wanted to run a different system and required a somewhat different recruiting strategy.

So sure, maybe Ash knows a bunch of innovative offensive guys, but from what I see Ash has never worked on the offensive side of the ball. I'd be surprised if he had some strong offensive vision that would persist no matter the OC(s) he hired. Maybe he does, but most former DC's don't operate that way.

If Ash is hired, he might take Tony Alford with him. Coached together at Iowa State for 4 years and was just reunited with him at Ohio State. Alford is a very good recruiter.

Maybe Barney Cotton, who is the OC at Nevada. They coached together at Iowa State.

Wouldn't be shocked to see him bring his old boss Dan McCarney back, probably on the defensive side. He was just fired as the head coach at North Texas.

Don't they say DEFENSE wins championships? Look st the Patriots. Tom Brady had to rely on a no name guy on D to win the SB against Seattle, on the last play of the game. Stop with the "we need an offensive coach". If it's Ash, he does have a resume of coaching at some of the top football programs. He'll just need to bring in a good OC and good recruiters with him. That's it. It just might work. Everyone needs to step away from the ledge...

Interesting relationship with Narduzzi. If he comes here, the Pitt games will be a lot more interesting from day one.

You and I have a very different interpretation of the word interesting.

If it's Ash I'll be disappointed. Not that he can't be good, but that the door marked "quickest way to explosive offense" will stay closed for another 4-5 years.
But why? He could bring in an Art Briles or Chip Kelly disciple as the offensive coordinator, couldn't he? Wait and see who he would hire to run the offense before we start saying that the offense will be horrible for 4-5 years.

Well that just flat out isn't true, not even the realm of accurate.

Period.

Before anyone else says it, I'll do it for them:

BC had the #1 defense in the country this year. BC went 3-9.

Since I am rooting for an offensive guru too, I am hoping posting another 'if X is hired, this is how his staff might look like' post will cause Coyle to head in a different direction.

there are art briles and chip kelly disciples who are already offensive coordinators.

unless he's going the high school route, we're probably getting a position coach

and it's probably going to be an urban meyer position coach which is a lot less sure thing

Let's just go full fantasy here: if he somehow brought Beau Baldwin in as his OC, I'm assuming you'd be on board with Ash.

College Defense =/= NFL Defense.

College defenses suck, as a principle. Offensive coaches figured this out over a decade ago.
