Clemson Postgame Thoughts

It’s funny because I thought Red was way better than Brownell this game. Hall should have had 30 and Brown should have been fouled out
I can't believe they weren't going to him every time. I think they were afraid of Brown tapping the ball away and sending us on fast breaks. One of the few ways we can score.

I look forward to watching Mintz on the Shanghai Sharks next year.
probably correct but I for one will be glad to never watch him play for anyone. Single handedly took us out at the end

Our repetitive defensive lapses and poor rebounding are a really a big part of this loss, but our combo guard PG trying to play hero ball gassed when we need scripted, efficient end-of-game plays that yield good looks...

...it absolutely screams for a competent point guard.

People saying JJ or Cope can be our next PG... Shoehorning a combo guard with handle into the position comes with a lot of limitations, and we again see why at the end of this game.

I think people have forgotten how important an effective PG is since we haven't had one for so long.

If Cuffe continues not to play, and Carrey/Hima are dealing with injuries, we genuinely have about 6.5 total players that can play at all. It’s unsustainable.
It's at the point where, if we have fouls to give, we would benefit from putting a warm body in with the direction to foul on the floor a couple times in a row - then make a sub as slowly as possible each time. Basically trade a couple fouls to give for an extra "timeout."

And hey, maybe you get lucky and get a steal out of it.

What does that have to do with what I just said and asked? PLAYERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR TURNOVERS AND BAD SHOTS
We shoot such a high number of contested jumpers, isn't it on the staff to help with run some sets to get open jumpers?

-this game perfectly illustrated how to use Joe. This is what we should have been doing through his whole career. He took open shots and wasn’t asked to do things he can’t do like bring the ball up court against pressure.
-i’m pleased that we didn’t fold like we have so often this year. I think most of us expected it after the first half. But the team battled, despite the fact that most of those guys were exhausted and rarely got a break. I guess you could call this our best loss of the year Fwiw.
-but Judah’s late game sequence was devastating. First was the ill-conceived, forced fallaway. Then was his decision to try to clearly flop in the open court late in the game, when no referee is going to give anybody that call. And of course he turned the ball over on a subsequent possession. To be fair I thought his man-to-man defense against Joe was very good for most of the game. I wish he would dig in against other point guards not just against Joe.
-I was excited to see Bell not get down on himself early and play well in the second half. He was far from perfect in the second half including a very ill advised, contested three-point attempt. But he played well in the second half and shot well coming off his career best game. He also had a nice basket of the dribble in the lane, which I hope to see more of.
-I feel for Taylor. A lot of his problems are clearly in his head. He’s a better player than he is showing. I can’t see why Red wouldn’t try to take some pressure off of him and start Copeland.
-Cuffe not getting minutes again is really weird, especially given the lack of depth. I hope the soft Syracuse media asks about that.
-JJ was a no-show in the first half and his defense against picks is nonexistent and needs some serious coaching. But it was good to see him come up huge in the second half aside from the missed bunny. He should continue to get better over the next two seasons like he has this season.

Good coaches get the best out of poor players. They recruit these guys, get them on campus, practice and drill with them.

If it was just about getting the most top-100 recruits, then it would be easy to win.

Good coaches get the best players

Mintz single-handedly blew that game the last 4 minutes because he is so stinking selfish and stupid. And Taylor is such a liability he should not be playing whatsoever.

And you can't win basketball games when you don't even try playing defense in the first half
Unfortunately this is so accurate

It's amazing that he has survived there this long because I don't think he is very good and today was a good showing of why. Although he is using J** G***** exactly how he should be used in P6 basketball and his numbers this season back that up.

They will lose in the first round if they play a team with a halfway decent coach.

They recruit the players who play. The coach the players who play. They choose who to play and when to play them. I don’t get this take.

This implies that players cannot be held at fault and necessitates that everything will always be the staff’s fault, so it’s not worth mentioning that it’s the staff’s fault.

I don't have near enough evidence to judge Red one way or the other. One thing I am pretty confidant about is that Clemson has much more talent that we do. And we were right there at the end of the game with them. Now, I would bet that Red counted on Westry and Benny playing for us. And McCloud as well. We will know more down the road.
Concur, but honestly, it was pretty obvious last season that Bell and Taylor needed a lot of work to be valuable players. JJ was not super impressive at ND. No one could know what they would get with Westry. It's like the Yankees gambling on broken old vets and injury prone guys and then complaining that weird, things didn't work out, whocouldaknowd. I don't think McLeod is capable D1 center playing M2M in Red's defense. I get that he was the best option available, so sure.

But these were the guys we are playing. Moreso on the coaching staff is the dumb offense that is a holdover from JAB's last decade and doesn't look any better. It's been a decade that everyone has been blaming the talent on the floor, but execution has been flawed for a long time just as well.

Kids played hard. We are a very young team. No size. with McCloud we win this game. Bell and Judah lost this game with poor decision making. Really poor shot selection from Both of them. Did we forget how to make foul shots. Would have liked to see some Carey and Zone. I certainly hope that the posters who keep putting JJ down watched this game.

No it really is because whether they can play or not, we only have maybe 2 games left we can win. With or without more guys. And we can win against those two with 6.5 guys.

Joe clearly didn't know he hit his 2000th point. If that was someone on our current team they would have been hunting those points. Reason we lost is we stopped hunting Joe on D. We had four hoops in a row on him and we went away from it. That's on Red.

What I worry about, is what is our brand now? Are we still Syracuse where we can go out and get guys to portal in? I have to think we are . And my thinking is because of Fran Brown. If he can do it in football, it can be done in hoop. But I'm not sure. And that scares me. We need at least 3 good guys in the portal.
