Clemson Postgame

Louisville makes the move to bring in a PROVEN head coach and they immediately turned it around in one damn year to the point they’re ranked, second in the league and talking about what seed they’re going to get. Why the hell can’t Wildhack see all of this and make a damn move. My apathy has turned back into anger at the thought of putting up with this pathetic bs for another year when we have examples of places like Louisville and how quickly they fixed their program.
Well the move isn't happening midseason. Even though Stephen . Austin just did it.

Evidently, Stephen Austin cares more about basketball than Syracuse.

One more year...

Sadly, you are 100% correct. The Peter principle is squarely applicable here. Red knows more basketball than 99.99999% of the posters here will ever know. I have zero doubt that he has the capability to be a tremendous assistant coach, but he's out of his depth.

He's not going to recruit his way out of this hole, he's not going to coach his way out of this hole, we're delaying the inevitable, and the sorry results will lead to increasingly poor attendance until change is made.

And when the roster fully turns over after this offseason, we're not going to have a roster position to have him have success next year either. So what's the point?
Do we really know this though?

I think he has the capability to be a good, not great, recruiter. But does that really make you a tremendous assistant coach?

From 2011-16, he was a recruiter on staff. He probably was lead on Jerami Grant & helped us get Gbinije from Duke. Very good pulls. Then probably Chris McCullough due to NYC ties (bust).

From that point forward, the DMV & NYC guys (his areas of strength) we got were Frank Howard (meh), Andrew White (transfer, one year, good), Taurean Thompson (yuck/transferred), Elijah Hughes (good), Jalen Carey (yuck/transferred), Alan Griffin (meh/forced out), Woody Newton (meh/transferred), Kadary Richmond (good/transferred), Benny Williams (yuck), Maliq Brown (good/transferred), Judah Mintz (good but polarizing), Kyle Cuffe (meh), Justin Taylor (yuck/transferred).

Not all that impressive. Probably had some involvement in others but even so, since he has taken a larger role on staff the program has plummeted. People blame Boeheim a lot, but they're a coaching staff. Shared blame, and a lot of that was Jimmy's and Joe's (and honestly, still is - even though I do think we could have won more games with this collection).

But what about how great Red did getting 20 wins with a cast of outfits last year???

Come on guys. For those who threw that in the face of those who were a bit skeptical with Red, what do you say now exactly?

Talk about a narrative that just grew on this board out of peoples a---
Sadly, the credit for alot of those wins goes to Judah. Because when your offensive scheme isnt working you need a player that can drive and get to the rim or fouled. Judah also couldve won us a few more without a few bad plays at the buzzer.
I dont really remember but Im thinking Judahs FTs attempted was up there in the rankings.
Edit: he was 8th in nation. 1st ACC
* over 2 more FTs attempted per game than 2nd in ACC
77%

I'm actually defending the decision to hire him. I'm not defending Red. If you read my post I would fire him if not for Melo. I'm on Record on this. I simply understand why he was hired and why he will be our coach next season.

Since we can't play or execute any competent forms D1 offense or defense, I'm not sure what adding a couple more AAU freshmen and some new portal mercenaries with Melo's cash really gets us.

We still need a coach that can coach the players available.

If the plan is to hope we'll get blood from that stone for another 1 or 2 years, well, we deserve what we'll get.

I'm not a mintz fan, but he was more effective than JJ. The biggest reason is that 1) he got more steals even playing lazy defense (JJ doesn't do any better but without the steals); 2) when he scored, he often drew fouls and got the other team in foul trouble and frustrated them - it was kind of a 2 for 1. He was a true disruptor. Not a fan of him, but at this time, more effective than any other player than what we have now.

US Men's Soccer had a game tonight against Costa Rica. MLS guys, but boy it was entertaining, they played hard and won 3-0, after winning 3-1 vs. Venezuela on Saturday. Much more fun than watching SU hoops right now. I can't stand being 15-20 points down in the first half of literally every game.

And it was B team vs B team. Maybe C.

But I don’t disagree that it was more compelling than our lower-in-alphabet nonsense.

Eh. About the same as JB's last 2 seasons. I mean, it's not like we expected Red to be an improvement, did we??

Sigh.
True.. but reds first year was with JB recruits and players and at least got him 20 wins.. This train wreck of a season is all Red

JW made the right and safe call going with Red. After next year unless Red makes the dance JW will have the ability to go outside and make a good hire. By waiting he will have the full support vs a fractured base if he had gone outside first.
The problem is, by waiting another season, how much of the fan base will be lost?

We are getting dangerously close I fear already. It’s scary the difference over the last 5 years or so in fan enthusiasm. The fact the women’s team is doing so poorly as well is another hit. No where for hoops fans to go.

I think we’re all resigned to the fact that Red will be back next year. Who can/should we bring in to help teach defense? That might be our biggest question.

Red is getting next year.
If he focuses on recruiting and being the figure head coach he has a shot. He needs to let the GM determine who we spend money on. He needs to bring in a new coach to teach D.
Lots of moves need to be made. Let's see if Red's got the chops to shake up his staff and get help. If not he will be fired after next season.
This is exactly what JW did with Dino & football team. You cant micromanage this like you were at ESPN. Coaching is completely different

Please sell me how we will be better next year. I’d love to hear it. Are we going to play defense? Are we going to be able to shoot? Will we be able to run? Please don’t tell me winning is 21-10 and a bubble team. If it is we need to cut bait now.

Ouch that is really really bad
First, to be very clear, I’m not defending it. But Im curious to see how that compares with other first time coaches.

My guess is that it’s not good.

Are u saying we're not even a camp cupcake quality team??

Now I am really depressed.

Didn’t watch. Knew what was going to happen. Now I can delete it off my DVR. Actually nice not being so bent out of shape frustrated.

I like this plan.

Maybe I will give it a try for my sanity.

We've got mostly better ACC teams remaining, so it's likely gonna be clubber lang pain...

we've been saying this since last year.
losing is one thing. that's on the players, a couple missed baskets.
Getting blown out is another.
Yes, got it, play with who you've got.
But seriously - slow the game down. Pete Carril style.

Red is not a good coach. I long for Hopkins, and that's saying something, based on how he did at UW.

He brought in the guy from ODU to coach D and hes done nothing. He doesn't get to build a staff when he seemingly cant identify on or off court talent

The best another coach would do wouldn't be enough to beat the better teams. We don't have much talent, actually the talent level is pathetic. JB, Coach K wouldn't win with this team. The kids are not very good. Other than JJ and Donnie when healthy we don't have one kid who would be a major contributing player on any top 20 team.
Dry Hump might on the right team but the rest of the guys are average at best
Coach K never wouldve built this awful roster so just another indictment on Red.

So basically he's missing most of the qualities you'd want in a head coach,. but go ahead and keep him as a figure head? That's great...

If you read those articles about Sadiq and Kyan this week, they have a good relationship with Red but Straughn was the key to the recruitment and who they talk to every day. Straughn and Kline ( to give him time to see what he can do) are the only parts of this program worth keeping.

If Red is gone, Straughn and Kline are gone too.

A new broom sweeps clean.
