Coach Search Options after Autry

Wish there was a way to gather a petition quickly and get it to the search committee with a very scathing letter around fan support falling apart should they choose Lykes/Hop

There isn't a search committee. It is Hopkins and Melo telling everyone how much money they will bring in and everyone agrees. No real interview or qualification checks or anything. Hey I am going to bring in 15 million in NIL Cool you got the job.

I’m talking about the AD search committee.

Does Hodgson know how to navigate the complexities with the Dome being multi purpose with Football, Lacrosse, and Women's Basketball. Potentially having to wait till gameday to do walkthroughs. Hopkins does. This is another argument in the pro Hopkins camp. Doesn't the away team also deal with this when they come to play us?
Oh no!!! That’s like rocket science combined with quantum physics, all at once. Who but Hopkins could figure that out?

I think we just need the BoaT to look through the JB coaching tree and see that, outside of Pitino who really wasn’t there long enough to count, the JB coaching is very unsuccessful. Like Hopkins, Red, Murphy, hart, Malone, Orr had a couple good year but not great, and GMac is to be seen. Most others never climbed out of the assistant ranks. Probably for a reason.

I am far from an insider. I just read the board. But based on the info from people who do have inside info in this thread: If you still think ADJW had the ability to fire JB and hire whoever he wanted without a whole lot of politics in play, I think that's pretty naive.

I was just thinking about failed coaches that went on to become big winners. You guys might be too young to remember the NY papers when Joe Torre got hired by the Yankees. Or the reaction in Boston when Terry Franconia was hired by the Red Sox. Throw Bill B in to that as well with the Pats. People can learn and they can get better. That isn't to say I would hire Hop. I wouldn't. But the amount of Nil that we are talking is eye opening. Is it a sugar high? 100% yes. Is it the long term answer, I think not. But I have been wrong before and so has everyone on this board. The good thing is the answer is coming. Sooner rather than later.
I don't think Baseball is a good analogy. I have always thought that managers don't make of a difference w/ Joe Torre as my prime example of someone who suddenly became much smarter with a Steinbrenner budget. As opposed to Football and Basketball, a guy like Bill Parcells and Pat Riley are successful everywhere.

I bet one thing liked about the next AD is that she will come cheaper than other candidates.

We are cheap nobody can tell me otherwise.
I would be happy if they really did cheap. It's overpaying for mediocrity that grinds my gears.

Crap, I think GMAC would be better than Hop now.
Wouldn't Melo back GMAC like he would Hop?
I'm going to guess the powers that be have zero interest in GMAC right now (despite having more relevant success and experience) which is why the basketball alumni are backing Hopkins as the family option. We need to be rolling the red carpet out for Hodgson and if you can unite the donors for Hopkins and Hodgson into one pool for Hodgson. We will be a national championship contender. That's not an over exaggeration. When people say Syracuse doesn't have access to resources they mean Syracuse doesn't have access to unconditional resources, that is the problem, too much conditions on the resources to really limit the ceiling of the return on investment.

Melo and GMac famously didn’t get along during the 2003 season. Boeheim had to mediate (I believe it was after the loss to Rutgers that things came to a head).

Obviously that was a million years ago when both were young, immature adults. But who knows if they’ve ever been close.

If we hire Hop I think you could argue we wouldn’t even have a top 5 coaching staff in New York State. I’d probably rank it St John’s, Bonnie’s, Siena, Oswego, Herkimer, and then just maybe Syracuse.

Yeah and as someone making a case for needing an elite staff then posting what he had at UW.. I mean come on. Then add hiring Lykes and it’s almost to the point of why bother having athletics anymore or stay in a P4 conference?

I'm guessing this will be Hopkins sales pitch:

1) You know and like me.

2) Melo will fund NIL at a top national level. Basically unlimited funds! We will offer the most money to any high school or transfer portal player that I want. I will get the top transfers and top high school talent.

3) Kiyan will stay at Syracuse and I can make him really good.

4) I've learned a lot working in the NBA and all these players want to be told how to make it to the NBA.

5) I will have Melo's funding to buy the best coaching staff and scouting possible to help me.

6) I will take a low salary.

7) My plan will cost 2-3 times less than hiring an upcoming mid major coach and hoping he works out.

8) Currently Syracuse is a mess and has no AD or Chancellor. I don't care who you hire & will take job now.

BTW - I still really want BH over Hop but having unlimited basketball funding for a few years is tempting. It would be funny if Syracuse buying a basketball title forced NCAA NIL changes.

I said 20 million on the roster, but maybe 30 million on the roster just to make sure. Kentucky went 22 million and aren't getting a good ROI.

what I’m dying to know is who Hop must be saying he could form his staff with lol

All the details we agonize over here I honestly question the BOT’s competency to consider.

In my opinion we find ourselves in this ridiculousness because my understanding is pre-NIL SU relied on ticket sale/dome revenue to fund its program and never even considered having a campaign geared towards asking alum for money. We started out miles behind everyone when NIL came around.

and still top 5 in the country. little old syracuse ny. in reality we were spoiled by the huge numbers we used to get.
Tickets sold is a lagging indicator, especially with long-time fans who worked hard to get their good seats. Actual butts in seats is what? 8k? 10k? That probably ranks close to every other struggling P4.

Even with the most expensive roster in the ACC I don’t see Hop being top 4 in the league let alone getting anywhere near winning a title.

Then factor in hiring what could be one of the worst ADs in the country and yeah … it’s fantasy land thinking that plays out as anything but failure.

So if McNamara makes it to the Elite 8, we just disregard that completely? The hype around him would be unreal and donors would be stepping up. Seems like a long shot but look at what St. Peter’s did.
We would look foolish in that scenario. Yes I agree.

U would see the Gerry McNamara is overrated clip 1,000x
