Correct, no matter what is said, that is coming with playing time and being featured attached no way it is not.

My thing is if Melo and the alumni really want what is best for Syracuse basketball, take the 30 million and get the best coaching staff on the market. That is how you would really make long term impact for Syracuse basketball and your son's NBA future. For 30 million, they can use that money to pull successful P4 coaches away so do that instead.
Melo is no different than any other sport parent. He wants his kid to be the star.

And after Kiyan departs -- what then?

This sounds like a short-term influx, not a long-term sustainable set of NIL funds.
I wouldn't expect anything in college sports to persist long term so it's not the drawback it used to be

In five to ten years, who knows what the world is like, the wealth is going to be insane if AI doesn't kill us all

The Lally's have the better coach to bring to the table though lol. Same thing with what Football needed.
Well, that is opinion based. Others may not agree with that. I would certainly agree with you.
The point is that the Lally's or anyone else have to be held to the same standard was Melo.
Otherwise, what are we talking about here?

I can say this with certainty - Melo has a package of $30 million (and growing) lined up for Hop. This includes nba players, local guys and a few that have never donated to cuse ever before. The plan is to front load that money for the first 2 years to immediately become relevant. But that’s what the deal is for Hop from Melo.
I'm a little surprised that Melo and crew would hitch their wagon to Hop. Everyone likes Hop, but he didn't exactly set the world on fire as a Head Coach. Same with Wayne Morgan and Rob Murphy and nobody has ever mentioned them.

Hopkins had Jaylen Nowell who had been in the NBA since 2019. Same with Thybulle. He had a team with Jaden McDaniels and Isaiah Stewart both 6 years in the league and went 15-17 with them. Money can only get you so far, look at Coach Cal he has endless money every year and yet he losses to no names every year.

This is all just disgusting, I never disliked Melo but if he pushes for this and we end up fizzleing out after the first season, My fan hood will head somewhere else...

we significantly increased the budget for football assts and also added budget for additional staff.
Yeah if anything throughout this thread, I'm learning Syracuse isn't cheap, quite the opposite in fact. They are just not good enough navigating the obstacles the politics that seem to be a reoccurring issue for a better successful outcome for everyone involved when it matters.

Do we know what the Lallys are willing to commit to Hodgson? I can’t imagine it’s anywhere near 30 million

Lally has a kid on the team that needs to get minutes and shots, who wasn't very good last year?
The Lally's also didn't win us a national championship. And so because they don't have a kid you think it is 100% a okay for them to take their ball and run if they don't get the person they want. Gotcha

What’s in it for the donors to provide all this cash? I get boosters who want to play fantasy basketball but random nba players? Something is off here imo.
That kind of $$$ gets you unlimited access, which Melo already has. I'm with you though, I'm struggling to wrap my head around the $30M number. But if the number is real and front loaded...

How long will the Hop train be allowed to chug along.

Sorry, I fundamentally disagree with this premise. That's short-term, wishful thinking and does not reflect the realities attached to the candidate it comes with when thinking longer term.

Two years from now, Kiyan is gone, Melo leaves the program. Now what?

And it might be only 1 year, after this upcoming season, before Kiyan bails for the NBA.

That's my fear.

One-time, short term influx of admittedly large $$$, that quickly evaporates. And we're left with another subpar, no-trick pony head coach who can't coach his way out of a paper bag [based upon what unfolded at UW].

I wish Kiyan went to USC. None of this would have happened. The irony is he will be the first one to get booed next year if this is a disaster.

We have some great posters here making such well articulated points. Can we get some of y'all on the local talk radio, podcasts and on Axe’s show to spread the gospel of why Hop would be an absolutely horrendous hire? I’m not kidding here. We have to push back on Paulie and Infanti and Axe and others from rationalizing this hire as it goes further down the tracks. Media pushback will be key to getting into the decision makers ears before they make another massive mistake.
If that were only true. The university make decisions period. Like Caesar “ let it be written, let be done!”

For the Hop supporters: So if you were running a business and had a manager who over a number of years had shown he could not get results at an acceptable level, you'd just throw more money at the department to solve the problem?

The drawback IS real, if it becomes only a one year or two year benefit, that quickly goes away.

Talk about short sighted "planning."

Old money + stakeholders vs new money. People are invested in the traditional brand and don’t want to see it handed over to the Bryan “the shark” Hodgson, also known as The Guppy to some. We aren’t at rock bottom where the majority of the donor class wants a complete overhaul. The brand isn’t dead; it just smells funny. They are literally putting up the money to revive it. You love to see it!!!
