Coach Search Options after Autry

Be interesting to see how Schertz fits in at LSU if they rehire Will Wade. Maybe OSU, but Diebler isn't a lock to be let go.

I can see him wanting to stay at Saint Louis, but if a bunch of SU boosters want to band together, they should be able to make him an offer that he can't refuse.
I think he has a bit of an inflated ego about his coaching ability. Don’t get me wrong. I am a fan of his but yea…

I don’t think he’s married. On tv they called her his fiancée. I think they have a two month old baby boy and he hasn’t missed a game since he was two weeks old. Does that mean we’ll have daddy ball again in eighteen years?
can we hope?

Well, in the last 60 years, they have conducted precisely ONE national search for an AD or a head coach of a revenue sport.
That just isn't even close to true in any way, shape or form. A national search led to Dick Mcpherson, Greg Robinson, Doug Marrone (he was not the front runner at all, just so happened to be a former syracuse player who showed up with a 200 page playbook), Dino Babers and Fran Brown.

AD: Darryl Gross and Mark Coyle were both national searches.

And BBall never needed a national search because Boeheim was there for 48 years and Autry was a pretty accepted hire at the time.

A national search doesn't equal national relevance. It is still a game between 2 teams, 1 team always wins, 1 team always loses. Success is never guaranteed before, during or even after hire. Sometimes you can hit a grand slam with the guy who is threatening to leave for the University of Rochester if not hired. Sometimes the national search sets you back 20 years with GROB (RIP). If we hired Nick Saban tomorrow, would that be considered a national search?

This post should be nominated and ultimately win 2026 post of the year. Let the rational likes and loves commence.

#Winner. Anyone notice, it looks like he wears a rubber bracelet that says "Always Stay Humble". Let's hope Hodgson can convince her how great she will be as the first lady of Syracuse Men's Basketball. In seriousness, it's such a key role that often goes unnoticed. I can't remember, but it's been talked about how Juli really balanced Jim persona helping him to experience the success he did in the second half of his career including the Natty.

and the last thing I will end with. Success can be slow. Examples:

Coach Mac's first 6 years.

I don’t get the Chris Mack love. The guy had one good year in 4 at Lville and got fired. 2017 is a long way away from when he had a great year at Xavier. I mean he coaches at college of Charleston now
Personally, he seems kind of shady. But he’s wildly more proven of a coach than Hop. He had top 10 teams at Xavier his last few years there and took his teams to 10 NCAA tourneys. Your 2017 reference is incorrect. He had a national championship contender at Louisville in 2020 before the tourney was canceled due to Covid. They were #1 in the country that season. His last two seasons wound up getting marred by the Dino Gaudio extortion scandal and some player drama. He has a much more proven track record than Hop. I’d want to know how he’s running his offense these days. A modern fast-paced offense with lots of off-ball movement, screens and cuts is imperative for me.

They were totally different eras with completely different expectations. Plus teams could only be built slowly. K started at $48k a year in salary (~$200k/year adjusted for inflation).

This mindset is completely irrelevant today, unfortunately. Every season is independent of any other season. There’s no building a program when you have a different team every year with very little continuity. Players hardly stay more than a season or two.

The positive side of this is we could put together a national championship level team next year with the right coach, players, and resources (e.g. NIL).
