Coach Search Options after Autry

It was my understanding from the conversations that I has that Syracuse we were near the top 3rd of the ACC this year in NIL.

We had multiple players with multi million dollars deals

We had a coach that didn’t really help or want to be involved in that process.

So with little to no coach support fundraiser a coach who didn’t want to fundraise and coming off a losing season we were able to be top 1/3rd in ACC in NIL.

Now I am to believe we can’t hire a good coach who will do the things that Red wouldn’t. Engage in fundraising. Engage the fan base. Win games. That we somehow will have less NIL with those things?

The whole thing is weird and I’m tired of the gaslighting. 1 or 2 upsets, ok not ideal, but it happens. We are at like 4 for the year. Even Virginia Tech and Miami at home, those should be wins.

Who do you think should pay? Come on be specific. The University is providing $20 million which is the legal amount agreed upon for each university. Who then pays for NIL in your world that differs from the current sources that makes sense? You can criticize the reality in this new collegiate sports world but then what is your answer? I haven’t heard any solutions nor options in the posts if you don’t think fans, corps, or businesses is the answer.

nobody said we'll have less. unless there's big donors stepping out which I have no idea. but as we've seen the past couple years, nil dollars for players have gone up up up. same can be said for a prospective coach and his perceived nil needs to get those players. $5m this year may become $10m next year.

If that is the base line then we will have more next year.

The university can now pay directly not like last year
Hire the correct coach not some off the wall under radar cheap coach they will either per have access to their own revenue or now the importance and get out and come up with more.

So if you tell most coaches we interview the baseline rock bottom for our NIL is top 3rd of ACC and they are confident in their abilities NIL should be a problem in the interview process.

Against a select few schools that might be a problem but certainly not a problem overall to where we are going to have to hire from the JB coaching tree or an alum

No offense to everyone saying well Syracuse isn’t what it used to be and the brand is stale and we haven’t been good in forever.

All true but The same is going to be true of every other team on the market for a head coach this offseason too. If you’re replacing your head coach your brand is already stale and in trouble.

Very few coaches retire and go out on top especially now days. I actually can’t think of a single P5 team this offseason that will have their outgoing coach be someone they wanted to keep but they will lose to retirement or getting a bigger gig. Maybe someone can correct me tho.

Nobody in the athletic department is crying poverty. Folks always want more money. They also never say they have enough money because then folks don’t give. This is just 101 stuff.

We can always use more donors. We can also use more business money. Most individuals don’t support nil. They do it through a business.

Anyone saying they know how much money we have for a new coach is likely lying for a few reasons. 1) we are about to have a new chancellor. 2) a new chancellor will likely pick their own AD at some point in the future. 3) we haven’t had to actually go out and get a new basketball coach in most of our lifetimes.

Relying on what we do for football for our basketball program which traditionally has generated top five revenue in the sport isn’t a good comparison.

We can’t afford to lose more revenue in basketball. Folks know that.

To do what? Beat BC every other game or to win tourney games in March? Maybe schedule Colgate again? I don't know what the school specifically wants to do. Hopefully win games or be a top 25 team again? These aren't questions for the fans, they are for the school and the admin.

Syracuse fans will show up but the school hasn't been a great steward of money of late. Even for the last decade as the program declined, the fans have supported the team waaaay more than than other top-10 all time wins programs would have. You think UK would still be getting 20k fans through the door for a team that hadn't been to a tourney in 5 years? Or even relevant in the conference for a decade? Louisville built a huge new arena for basketball, hired a family coach who was awful and their attendance dropped by 50%. They're still struggling to get them back. As of last year, SU was 5th in the country in paid attendance and Louisville had dropped to 15th nearly 5k people per game fewer than a losing SU team.

Thank you for being able to separate the basketball program and football program in your analysis. I love both programs at similar levels, but I can’t stand when people can’t separate the two. I guess they see us leaving the Big East for football as a reason, but they had to do it. The entire athletic department would be bankrupt without it and the government is not bailing us out. Basketball went through a lot, but the biggest setback currently is coaching not money.

Red's contract has no bearing on the next coach.

NIL, infrastructure, open jobs in BIG, PAC, and B-12, probably ACC stuff are all that matters. Whatever he may be owed is a rounding error next to that

So Syracuse is a small school who is struggling with NIL and can’t afford to pay a big time coach, but also a school that can kiss away 5-6M and not bat an eye? It’s gotta be one or the other

If attendance was a main driver in the cash allocated to a new coach/similar expenses, then I’d love to know where 20-30 years of averaging over 20k fans a game while getting a bargain on a HOF coach went. Where’d that revenue go? No one else in the country could do that.

It has more to do with donors, individual and institutional. Its not attendance.

I know little to nothing about negotiations leading to a coaching hire at D-I schools. Based upon your comments, you're in the same boat.

I don’t think there’s all that much to understand. He had no HC experience, he was on a declining staff and seemingly had no competing offers. You don’t need to be a top flight sport agent to see that is a situation where Syracuse should’ve gotten an absolute steal and the ability to make a clean break.

How is that guarantee communicated? I would suggest that if donors know who the possible coach is and whether they are a proven winner, they would be more likely to donate.
