I dont blame the ACC or the Sanctions but the 3 year exit ramp for JB that never happened and then the recruiting drop off that continued when Hop left for UW

The only people doing that are Bill Self, Jon Scheyer Kelvin Samson, Tommy Lloyd, Dusty May, Tom Izzo, Todd Golden, thats about it. Apologies if I missed someone but I dont think were landing any of them.

And I probably could do a better job of expressing it, but my point is there is no empirical evidence that Hodgson, with a TBD roster, can beat the Duke, UNC, Virginia and Louisville level teams he would be facing here. Very well possible he can, but without the evidence I can’t necessarily say missing out on him would be an abject failure or that he is the only one of the rumored candidates that should be considered. And we tried the faith without evidence thing, didn’t we?

If you have the large amount of money you hire Hop as the Head Coach( Director of Operations), then you hire well paid assistants who know offense and defense. Then you go out and buy the players who will fit the system.

That still leaves the bench coaching to Hop. Pass.

I think you might be focusing on the wrong question. A better question might be: could Hodgson beat the Duke, UNC, Virginia, Louisville teams once he's implemented his system, and gotten system fits, as a long-term program transformation.

Not worried so much about performance being optimized in year 1. But the footprint needs to be in place, to set the table for future sucess.

Faith without evidence is unnecessary here -- because he's shown his ability to elevate teams not once, but twice, in short order.

If Hop was at another school, having success and this was just trying to get a top coach back home, then it makes sense. But Hop is an assistant in the NBA for a crap franchise with little college HC success and no intrigue nationally.

Wouldn't Melo want his son in a proven offensive system with the ability to build his NBA resume from there? Can't he see the 1-on-1 nature of this season's offense is not going to go well!?

Just makes it seem Melo has no idea what is best for his son's basketball future and only wants him playing for a friend. That is probably harsh and even wrong, but that's what this appears to be.

I see it a little differently -- I think he wants Hop because he knows having Hop [who Melo has a strong personal relationship with] guarantees Melo access to the coaching staff, which will in turn enable him to have a [minor] say in how Kiyan is coached.

After this year didn't go the way Carmelo would have preferred for his kid, I'm guessing that he wants more access / influence over the next coach.

I don't think it is just about pumping up his friend, I think the motivations are more overtly selfish.

I'm not sure selfish is the right word. I think Melo truly wants the team to do well. I imagine that he wants his son to have a similar experience to what he had in Syracuse. In his mind, Hop with a ton of bought talent, can help replicate it. Huge risk given Hop's coaching record but people naturally prefer people they know and trust.

as i said the money is great, you can buy a pretty great roster for 15M a year, but what about when that money is gone? Then what? You're left with a sub .500 coach scraping together some dollars here and there to try to build a roster like this years.

Man this thread this awesome. But it genuinely just makes me sad. Not sure I’m even mad anymore. Mike Hopkins? Really?

I will say this. I am in my early 30’s. I grew up in what I would call the golden age of Syracuse basketball. When I was 9 Syracuse won a national title. Every March our teachers would roll in the tv and we would watch every BET & NCAAT game in class. They would shut it down for those 2 hours.
When I was in HS they were annually #1 and playing in sold out games on Big Monday. Everyone was planning their week around what we were doing and whose house we were going to for the game that week if we weren’t able to go.

My entire life… literally revolved around the Syracuse basketball schedule. I scheduled my wedding around the Syracuse football schedule… I am a die hard, folks. I went to a Syracuse basketball camp when I was 8 or 9 and took a picture with Gerry McNamara and I still have that picture on my wall in my office at my house. The first purchase I made when I got a big boy job was season tickets for Syracuse university’s football and basketball team. For the basketball games I went by myself most nights. I just wanted to be there.

This year, I have gone to ONE game and I got the tickets free. I’m not sure I have watched 1 game from beginning to finish since Kansas in Vegas. Other than the 1 game I attended, I have been offered free tickets on 7 different occasions (I just counted lol) and said no everytime. I could never imagine telling myself that at any other point in my life.

And now if they really go hire Hop at this point of where our program is at? I truly don’t know if I will ever come back. I don’t see myself watching any games next year. I know it’s not done, but I’m also not stupid and know how things go with this university and our awesome insiders. I’ve seen this slow burn play out before.

Maybe at the end of the day the make the right choice. And I will get off my soap box and just wanted to vent for a minute. But I’m just sad and feeling truly hopeless about the state of this program.

And double p.s. maybe they hire Hop and by some grace of god he magically turned into a really good head basketball coach and my pissing and moaning was for nothing… one can hope.

I just want the Syracuse basketball I grew up with back.

So then by that logic the assumption is that if Hopkins isn't hired Melo takes his ball and goes home? No funding?

Melo's stance is, hire a worse coach, play and feature my son, and I will give you money. This isn't AAU basketball, right?

That is a losing strategy for Syracuse because the money Melo is giving is a one time lump sum not an annual thing. So I would rather do what is in the best interest of Syracuse long term versus what is in the best interest of the Anthony's in the short term.

Get a proven coach with offensive and defensive systems build NIL structure the correct way to get stable annual support. If Melo doesn't want to be apart of that, so be it.

Nobody knows how either coach will do. What we do know is that BH will inject energy into the program with a fast paced high scoring team that will at least entertain. We aren’t entertained now. I have been to one game in two years and that was because my kid wanted to see Flagg. BH will need a couple yrs to compete with the dooks and tar holes but I think most are willing to see that transition. I fear Bringing in hop would be the same old same old and we will be having these convos again in three yrs. This school has had one of the worst managed athletic departments in D1 over the last 25 yrs and they have a chance to make a bold move with a guy who’s rep is growing exponentially. Sure BH could fail too, but I think we all know what hop will bring. I hope most of the hop talk is a last ditch effort by JB apologists.
