I'm not sure selfish is the right word. I think Melo truly wants the team to do well. I imagine that he wants his son to have a similar experience to what he had in Syracuse. In his mind, Hop with a ton of bought talent, can help replicate it. Huge risk given Hop's coaching record but people naturally prefer people they know and trust.I see it a little differently -- I think he wants Hop because he knows having Hop [who Melo has a strong personal relationship with] guarantees Melo access to the coaching staff, which will in turn enable him to have a [minor] say in how Kiyan is coached.
After this year didn't go the way Carmelo would have preferred for his kid, I'm guessing that he wants more access / influence over the next coach.
I don't think it is just about pumping up his friend, I think the motivations are more overtly selfish.
as i said the money is great, you can buy a pretty great roster for 15M a year, but what about when that money is gone? Then what? You're left with a sub .500 coach scraping together some dollars here and there to try to build a roster like this years. Can't believe so many people are like yup I know Hop is a bad coach, but Melo and his friends are giving up a one-time influx of at least 30 million NIL dollars that keeps growing, so it is all good and the correct move.
So, you're saying it doesn't matter which door we choose!Door 1 - Hop
Door 2 - Lyke
Door 3 - Gun
^I don't think there are many people on this board saying they think Hop should be the next coach. For sure not over Hodgson.
Many posters are saying or implying that it will be hard for Syracuse to not pick Hop due to the huge Melo funded NIL$ that apparently only comes with Hop being selected.

Nobody knows how either coach will do. What we do know is that BH will inject energy into the program with a fast paced high scoring team that will at least entertain. We aren’t entertained now. I have been to one game in two years and that was because my kid wanted to see Flagg. BH will need a couple yrs to compete with the dooks and tar holes but I think most are willing to see that transition. I fear Bringing in hop would be the same old same old and we will be having these convos again in three yrs. This school has had one of the worst managed athletic departments in D1 over the last 25 yrs and they have a chance to make a bold move with a guy who’s rep is growing exponentially. Sure BH could fail too, but I think we all know what hop will bring. I hope most of the hop talk is a last ditch effort by JB apologists.Agree! And I probably could do a better job of expressing it, but my point is there is no empirical evidence that Hodgson, with a TBD roster, can beat the Duke, UNC, Virginia and Louisville level teams he would be facing here. Very well possible he can, but without the evidence I can’t necessarily say missing out on him would be an abject failure or that he is the only one of the rumored candidates that should be considered. And we tried the faith without evidence thing, didn’t we?
Yes, insiders have hinted that Melo's big NIL$ will not appear if Hop is not the next coach. So then by that logic the assumption is that if Hopkins isn't hired Melo takes his ball and goes home? No funding?
Melo's stance is, hire a worse coach, play and feature my son, and I will give you money. This isn't AAU basketball, right?
That is a losing strategy for Syracuse because the money Melo is going is a one time lump sum not an annual thing. So I would rather do what is in the best interest of Syracuse long term versus what is in the best interest of the Anthony's in the short term.
Get a proven coach with offensive and defensive systems build NIL structure the correct way to get stable annual support. If Melo doesn't want to be apart of that, so be it.
And we know who has the much higher upside. And this will be the only time to hire that coach.Nobody knows how either coach will do. Totally agree except your fist sentence should say “any coach”. Nobody on here is Nostradamus.Nobody knows how either coach will do. I don’t know if you’re a poster or lurker here, but people are noticing the weird shift on twitter. Imagine what people are thinking who don’t know about the 30 mill plus and that Melo is behind it with the context of Hopkins and still many aren’t sold. Still, I hope they are noticing the fan base wants an outsider.
Well, I agree we should consider other candidates with a record of recent success, and the shown ability to mold an offense. But that ain’t Hop.Agree! And I probably could do a better job of expressing it, but my point is there is no empirical evidence that Hodgson, with a TBD roster, can beat the Duke, UNC, Virginia and Louisville level teams he would be facing here. Why hasn't Hop gotten another HC job since Washington?
Say they are crazy enough to make this hire, they would need to find a way to publicize the funding that is coming with it. But again I don't know if that will even be enough. The data doesn't support Hopkins ability to produce greatness with talent. Atleast the players that play with him with NBA talent potential still move on to the NBA.I think this is something that Syracuse higher ups aren't realizing or maybe they are floating it to see what the reaction is going to be.
And we know who has the much higher upside. And this will be the only time to hire that coach.
Hopefully Wildhack realizes that and makes the right move.
Wildhack’s email is easy to find and planning on emailing tonight after reading some of the warning signs. Any others that may hold sway?I implore others to do the same - Wildhack, while having a pulse of the fanbase, isn't sitting around sourcing message boards (anymore). This fanbase is the program; make yourselves heard.
He was. But only one of those 2 teams made the NCAAT, which shows how much they were valued. And after that he went 70-84. So yeah, a complete flop.I’m not advocating either way, but didn’t Hop win PAC-12 coach of the year his first two seasons. I believe he had two starters including his PG and star center out the entire season with injuries his last year as well. Again, not making excuses or saying he was John Wooden. But I don’t believe he was a complete flop.

If JB could be objective , I would want him making the decision, absolutely! He watches more college basketball (or at least he used to ) than any other person in the world. BUT he can’t be objective, in my opinion, and therefore should have no input. And who knows the most about basketball in our area? How about JB. You want him making the decisions?
