Damn if Hop and Melo pull this off, they understand the modern game more than you will ever know. Game passed them by???? Nonsense. Real G’s move in silence like Gbinije.
can you provied any examples from NCAABB?I was just thinking about failed coaches that went on to become big winners. You guys might be too young to remember the NY papers when Joe Torre got hired by the Yankees. Or the reaction in Boston when Terry Franconia was hired by the Red Sox. Throw Bill B in to that as well with the Pats. People can learn and they can get better. That isn't to say I would hire Hop. I wouldn't. But the amount of Nil that we are talking is eye opening. Is it a sugar high? 100% yes. Is it the long term answer, I think not. But I have been wrong before and so has everyone on this board. The good thing is the answer is coming. Sooner rather than later.
How many sports have made a pivot as significant, and rapid, as NIL and the portal?how many successful coaches outsource the mental part of the job?
NFL is rigged and scripted FYILately, I've been thinking more and more about how Syracuse reminds me of my Pittsburgh Steelers. Organizations that are afraid of change, clinging to the status quo, and frankly being frugal, convincing themselves that sustained success (i.e., just being average) justified standing still. It's time for a total reset. At least in the Steeler's case, they finally moved on from Tomlin, and for once, there's actually optimism. Hoping the same for Syracuse in that a new hire will bring in fresh ideas and is "outside of the family." Just give the fanbase a reason to believe again and provide hope.
I don't think I've ever put anyone on ignore before-Congrats!Is the Shark about to learn that there is always a bigger fish out there?!?!?! Stay tuned folks. Hold on to your butts.
Then why even have an AD?Wildhack is simply waiting to be told what the decision is so he can announce it.
So would it be an accurate description to say the Melo / Hopkins plan is to basically install Hop as like a GM / recruiter and we hope that the portal talent we get is just so far ahead the competition that we don’t need an offense or a gameday coach. Rely on the assistants and players to just figure out what works. The only thing that makes sense is he knows if he can get Hop hired he can control more of what happens with the team, how his son is used and have more access all the way around.
Correct, Hodgson is. That’s why this is so maddening. How many sports have made a pivot as significant, and rapid, as NIL and the portal?
Coaches are CEO’s now. We going to pretend we’re better when Fran makes all the decisions in football? Hurley lets Murray coach and determine the offense. We’re boxing ourselves in deciding we need another HOF coach, or maverick. Get someone who can build us a modern program, thats our shot. Likelihood is Hops not that guy. But we have to change how we think of HC’s.
Wayne Morgan had a good career. He, like Hop, was an excellent recruiter. He took over as head coach after Larry Eustachy was let go because of scandal after being his assistant. He led Iowa St to an NCAA tournament bid and a NIT bid in 2 of his 3 seasons there. He had a 55-39 record at Iowa St. Creightons Greg McDermott followed him as head coach at Iowa St and left with a 59-68 record before heading to Creighton. Before Iowa St, Morgan was head coach of Long Beach St and had a 175-91 head coaching record there.I'm a little surprised that Melo and crew would hitch their wagon to Hop. Everyone likes Hop, but he didn't exactly set the world on fire as a Head Coach. Same with Wayne Morgan and Rob Murphy and nobody has ever mentioned them.
And I prefer Hodgson as the #1 guy if it were up to me.Correct, Hodgson is. That’s why this is so maddening.

Then on the other side of the fence we have the new blood in BH. Better at everything across the board as a HC but more of a wildcard and less donor support upfront.
If Hop is the coach they better at least keep Alex Kline. I don’t trust Hops judge for talent either. Too defensive focused. So would it be an accurate description to say the Melo / Hopkins plan is to basically install Hop as like a GM / recruiter and we hope that the portal talent we get is just so far ahead the competition that we don’t need an offense or a gameday coach. Yes, where was all this support for Hop 3 years ago after JB stepped down before Kiyan got here? The only thing that makes sense is he knows if he can get Hop hired he can control more of what happens with the team, how his son is used and have more access all the way around.
Mike, chill.Washington is also 27-42 since Hopper left. Maybe there are some systemic issues in the programs
My worry if it’s the hop route, where does the money come from after his son is done at su. The 30 million figure I heard he’s offering won’t last long. Can hop raise big money yearly? With hodgson at least we get a guy than a turn around a program. I’m also worried that Hopkins east coast contacts being dried up. He’s been gone for a long time. I think hodgson is much safer bet.So would it be an accurate description to say the Melo / Hopkins plan is to basically install Hop as like a GM / recruiter and we hope that the portal talent we get is just so far ahead the competition that we don’t need an offense or a gameday coach. It’s almost like having lots of money and the interests of your child involved doesn’t guarantee good, objective decision making. Crazy! With Melo$ connection$ he has to have a better choice than Hop. The whole thing is odd.
Yeah that’s my thought. If it’s hop the need to score a monster portal class year one is a must. The clock is ticking. They only have 3 years of Melo money and I bet it’s only two as he leaves after his junior year. The approach is so short-sighted, it really is morbidly comical...
i thought i was in the twilight zone for a sec coming on here and reading so much about Hop...Even with money we are going to have to overpay players. Who wants to take a chance coming to a coach that struggled to average 70 ppg playing an offense designed for 1995 where his teams shoot 30% from 3 each season no matter the players. It’s so stupid I can’t even believe it’s got to the point of legitimate discussion. And we didn’t even get to discussing the zone.
I wish Melo was aware of what a poor track record Hop has as an offensive and defensive coach when it comes to modern schemes and sets using analytics and data then being able to teach those to his team. And I honestly don’t think his time in the NBA is gonna help, because NBA offenses are so different due to the talent level.I can say this with certainty - Melo has a package of $30 million (and growing) lined up for Hop. This includes nba players, local guys and a few that have never donated to cuse ever before. The plan is to front load that money for the first 2 years to immediately become relevant. But that’s what the deal is for Hop from Melo.
It’s gonna be so depressing to go through another 3-5 years of crap basketball. I can’t do it. At this point, I’m increasingly angry at JB for holding this program hostage for so many years at such a pivotal time.Reading this thread today and seeing that Lyke and Hopkins both have great chances of being the AD and HC have almost made me want to cry. I wish I was kidding, but that’s how bad I’d feel if they’re hired.
