This ^, I can't stress enough how much of a potential disaster Lyke would be as the new AD. If the new chancellor has any sort of a clue his first act is to get JW to change his mind on retirement, I don't care if you have to double his salary, Lyke is not the answer.
I get it. I wish he wasn't retiring. But knowing that realignment is 4 years away, that's a long commitment to ask for, for someone who will be 71 in 2030. It seems to me he wanted to get someone in there who will be there long enough to get the lay of the land and get consensus as to how to proceed. Just my opinion.

And to be clear, I think Lyke would be a disaster - not only operationally, but PR-wise also, given her baggage and history.

Hit up Senor Paco's for some cheap margaritas while you're there :)
Sadly, I am finding that during Ramadan many establishments are only serving alcohol discreetly, hence me having to room service the beers.

yea unfortunately the JW ship has sailed. We've got a new chancellor who probably wants their own person.

I don’t believe any NIL will come with Hop. I believe riches are being hinted at, but won’t come to fruition, particularly for the long term. Why? Because those people promising conditional funding don’t care about SU.
You may well be right. I don’t know if you’ve had any fund raising experience, but pledges are relatively easy to get. It’s the checks that are hard.

The Victory Heights project at Schpitt which was Lyke's baby, is way way over budget and still not completed. This and her dislike of fundraising and NIL. Don't forget the Capel extensions too. Hard pass.

Musical chairs is going to start again in the next 4 years or less. If we want to have a seat at the big boy table we had better knock it out of the park with this next AD hire. That is where the rubber is going to meet the road.

This is the better question to ask. She was, without question, fully vetted. She was given dual titles - Special Advisor to the AD and, more importantly, Special Advisor to the Chancellor. There was intent in doing so.

Question - not specifically directed at you, 007 -- but why should that matter anymore, since the current Chancellor is leaving and will soon be replaced?

I really hope that is not a deciding factor. We can't play around w/ this hire-it's too important. Pick the best person for the job.
Obviously but that doesn't seem to be the way things are trending in the Athletic Department.

Is there any push for Torrey Ball for AD? From the outside it felt like they were preparing for him to take over by his media appearances over the last few years. Do they feel he is too young?

This thread has become a mess. It isn’t this bad folks
It’s one of those where you freak out about how bad things could’ve been, but reality is this wouldn’t get picked up by Bravo or E network and even that has a bit of stageness to it

I agree. I actually think Hop could be very successful if he came to SU and had the full backing of the NIL whales. Hodgson looks likely to succeed too.
It’s not even necessarily those 2…nor just Lyke/NC. One of the most important pieces of the decision making process has been in Milan. Everyone watches too much Game of Thrones. This isn’t Winterfell and the Red Keep

Based on nothing, but hope.

Hop has not coached cbb for two years and failed when he did. I feel like that isn’t being highlighted enough. Until we see he has elite assistants that can install winning concepts who are proven we only have the pathetic excuse for a staff he had at UW to point to in terms of his hiring practices for a program.

FWIW, I think it matters because it suggests that current Chancellor was interested in her opinion of the athletic dept knowing that JW could or would be stepping down (there is more to that story). The university is looking to cut costs everywhere (not guessing here) due to the revenue share mandate compounded by the additional loss of revenue from the drop in attendance. Why add an additional, high level administer's salary at this point in time? Maybe they are trying to get the house in order for the transition to the new Chancellor? Maybe they thought/knew Heather was going to be a candidate to replace JW? This is obviously all just guess work. But, I have no doubt it was done with intent.

I genuinely hope you are right.

But the information that has trickled out certainly paints an alarming picture of behind-the-scenes in-fighting and dysfunction.

And coupled with the multitude of key positions that are open -- Chancellor, AD, MBHC -- this situation seems unfavorably timed.

For hoops, the program is in a precarious spot. Getting the hire wrong a second time, after allowing the iconic head coach to drive the program into the ground by hanging around too long, would be a significant problem for a frustrated fanbase.

And it would also be problematic with conference realignment looming.

Agree that it isn't life or death. But to the passionate members of the fanbase / alums, this is unwelcome news that makes an already uncertain future even more uncertain.

When JB was forced to step down, some BoT members and donors intervened in the process and foisted an unqualified internal hire on the program. I love Hopkins, he is a great guy, but he was awful at UW. And it appears that again, several BoT members and donors are jockeying again to influence the process such that it could go to an unqualified internal hire again.

Maybe it won't play out that way, but it sure seems like history is repeating itself.

What makes you think that?!? His different shade of Red offensive "scheme" he used? One tourney appearance in seven seasons? His pulling a Rutgers with two first round NBA draft picks? We have actual empirical evidence that he is a massive failure as a Division I head basketball coach.

Maybe the biggest issue is a lack of anything leaking out that points to a compromise to maximize funding and ensure priorities are in order while not resulting in certain factions being unwilling to support certain sports.

In addition- things like could a home run assistant AD hire be there to ensure Lykes doesn’t make the same screw ups she did at Pitt if she is the choice and ensure the two primary revenue driving sports have everything they need including collaboration around NIL. The assistant AD needs to also be someone who can have a strong voice and help as we enter the madness of the GOR coming to an end etc.

The blind spots are the issue and nothing much yet being shared reassures on that front.
