Coach Search Options after Autry

Pete Thamel just said on ESPN College Gameday that it’s not expected to be a good market for new coaches this offseason. He predicts there will be less than the 15 open jobs (Power 4 I assume) there was last year and no Blue-blood job openings (ouch).

No mention of Syracuse or any other potential openings.
We've never been a blue blood.

Buyer's market! The stars are aligning..

Sounds like he likes Tampa. I'd be pretty hesitant to trade Tampa for Syracuse, it would have to be a pretty sweet offer.

I agree. I grew up in Syracuse (Westhill). Went to Siena and came back after college. Been down in Lakewood ranch the last 7 years. I would need a godfather type offer to even THINK about coming back north.

What would you expect him to say? He also said the Buffalo wing place will probably become his favorite.

I don't think Kiyan will be here next year, the simple solution to all this is he will transfer, it is probably best for all parties
If Kiyan isn’t here then we can completely remove Melos money from the equation then all of a sudden anyone calling for Hop would be a lunatic. Then it’s purely a basketball decision …. Hop vs Shark

I'll just say this... these are the exact same words used before we hired Dino Babers.

I agree with the sentiment, but let's make sure there is substance behind the marketing message. FWIW BH has a similar profile to Dino before he got to Syracuse. Before you say but but BH coached at Alabama... Babers was at Baylor under Art Briles before he go to Syracuse.

Not saying BH will turn out like Dino... I think BH is much more aggressive when it comes to recruiting, but it remains to be seen whether he can build a sustainable program. Dino never built a program before Syracuse and we found out he probably couldn't build one period while he was here. Again BH seems young enough and passionate enough that he will build something, but he will definitely be learning on the job.
Like I said before. Stop comparing football to basketball.

There's ways to handle that as part of the negotiation legally if the 30 mil promise is legit... E.g. An escrow clearing account tied legally to the deal to prove ALL promised money is actually there upfront and real (for example) and tied to be released to the school under contract financial covenants, etc.

However, I'm with you on that... more probable that said "30 mil bag" is likely just a marketing ploy to back Hop with no real way to verify funds availability upfront (and whatever is ACTUALLY provided in the bag after he gets the gig will be no where near $30 mil) is my guess... And we'd never know anyways (the sort of thing private SU is not going to be transparent about.)

The 30 mil bag promise is a needed big "sweetener" to justify Hop as a legit candidate, since his CV is pretty terrible now, no other serious P4 school would hire him, and the justification is bunk otherwise without the big bag.

I may be very be wrong about that, but that's just my gut take...
Maybe they mean 30 million pesos. That's 1.7 million US dollars.

I live in Tampa, nobody cares about USF basketball here. It's an NFL, NHL, UFlorida, FSU town, even the poor attendance Rays are more significant than USF athletics. In Syracuse he's literally king of the hill, plus more local $ endorsements available to him. OK, so Tampa's weather is better, I'll give you that (except in hurricane season).

Hard to turn down a P4 program down, especially one that has a history like ours. If he gets us back to a top25 program again he will be a god.

Yeah, it seems like programs in great cities/locations are actually hurt by it in a way. There’s too many other options and the local college team can only rise so far up the pecking order.

And throw in that people may actually be sincere about the their donations to the 30 million but things happen to change things. 30 million suddenly becomes 15 million or whatever. If it goes Hopkins way, we have to know for certain that any money pledged is real.

Yeah, melo's NBA buds with no connection to the program actually stroking multi-mill checks when the time comes... I bet there will be some cold feet when check time comes, for example.

I just worry overall that floating the 30 mill amount is just the "sell" sizzle and the decision makers will go with Hop regardless of what the actual bag comes in at... Hope that's not the case, but worried this is all a ploy and the real bag will be a lot less. I also worry the school will never say publicly what the actual bag comes in at either, so we'll all be left wondering ...but the actual roster construction should tell us a lot.

For crowdfunding apps like Kickstarter, the rule of thumb is that about 20% of the pledges don't come through. I'd expect it to be higher for the dollar amounts we're talking.

I think this is a very important post. Sure we will take people at their word but this is big amount of money maybe they didn't want to tell Melo no to his face or on the phone really can't come up with the money they are saying they would.

They are not. Because if you look deeper into Dino, he went and took advantage of coaches before him. Clawson turned the program around and went 8-5 and then 10-4 before Dino got there and then immediately plummeted to 4-8 and 2-10 once Dino left. To me that says Dino took advantage of what Clawson left behind and did not adequately replenish the resources.

At eastern Illinois he just happened to inheret an NFL quarterback in the championship subdivision.

This is all before the transfer portal. Your team remained pretty much the same every year. In this day and age you have to essentially redo your roster every single year. Hodgson has done this at two schools with little success previously.

He's just a minnow with a man- (fish?) crush.

Minnows are extremely loyal and mate for life.

It's SCIENCE.
