Players react to the culture that is set. If you are on a team that has a culture and has set the expectations that you either play hard and defend or you are benched, then you can't complain when you get benched as long as that is the culture and standard that is set, and it is consistent with everyone. Players respond to that. You can see it all over the country. Once you have the culture set, the players who don't want to be held to that standard will shy away from the challenge and go to a different program.
If the players in Houston didn't want to play hard and compete every night, they wouldn't go to Houston. That is the expectation and culture that Sampson has set. They will not have players pouting and acting out for being benched because that is the culture of the program.
Now, if Red randomly tried to bench Anthony as he did for not playing defense or hard, then players will pout, and parents will complain because that is not the culture Red has set for the program. You can't just randomly do that stuff mid-season, but if that is the expectation and the culture, players will adjust.
