Coach Search Options after Autry

BH is really not the safe pick. He costs a lot more and has been moving around every 2-3 years. Also is in his late 30’s with a few unsavory comments here and there.

The powers that be are all old ass rich people that measure basketball coaches based on who’s friendly and who they know.

It’s an obvious choice to me and you but some people are still living in the past.
Is this sarcasm or parody or do these oar people really value winning that low? Late 30s is prime age, he's built a resume and is a disciple of an elite modern coach.

If you watched Arky and UF last night Golden and Calipari had unsavory comments and nearly came to blows, would that disqualify them?

I agree w your last line.

Has anyone asked the HoF’er what he thinks of Baby Shark Hodgson? Maybe Jim likes his style.
He's probably still bitter that Hodgson was part of the last Oats/UB staff that came in and beat SU.
What was the story?
Oats said pregame or halftime or in a timeout SU is soft and then they took our soul down the stretch of the game

The point of benching is accountability, not just on-court optimization. Even a marginal drop in performance can be worth it if it reinforces standards that ultimately elevate the team. When coaches avoid consequences because the alternative isn’t perfect, they send a louder message, that talent excuses behavior, which is far more damaging long-term.
I didn’t say never bench a player. I just said it can have varying results. It’s the only option a coach actually has to stress player accountability however each player can react differently to it though. Doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be used but it also isn’t a sure fire way to always change attitudes or correct repeated mistakes made on the court. That’s all I meant.

Players react to the culture that is set. If you are on a team that has a culture and has set the expectations that you either play hard and defend or you are benched, then you can't complain when you get benched as long as that is the culture and standard that is set, and it is consistent with everyone. Players respond to that. You can see it all over the country. Once you have the culture set, the players who don't want to be held to that standard will shy away from the challenge and go to a different program.

If the players in Houston didn't want to play hard and compete every night, they wouldn't go to Houston. That is the expectation and culture that Sampson has set. They will not have players pouting and acting out for being benched because that is the culture of the program.

Now, if Red randomly tried to bench Anthony as he did for not playing defense or hard, then players will pout, and parents will complain because that is not the culture Red has set for the program. You can't just randomly do that stuff mid-season, but if that is the expectation and the culture, players will adjust.

I hear ya. I’m just trying to tell ppl this isn’t some open and shut case cuz I do actually really think that some of the board has no clue.

They value winning I’m sure and a good coach.

that’s the easy part but they don’t understand what that takes and looks like in the current landscape.

why isn’t coach Brian the shark Hodgson, also known as Baby Shark to some, on the big boards for any other jobs?????? It seems nobody wants him except for a few terminally online Syracuse fans manifesting it on their Twitter accounts and in this thread. I don’t get it. Nary a peep of interest from LSU, Pitt, BC, and OSU fans. Are they asleep at the wheel??????
I know your trolling (way to much) and even if your a little serious how can you say that when Hopkins has no interest outside of cuse and maybe Boston college at best.

How many people on the BOT do you know for you to say that they make their decisions on who's friendly and who they know?

Why should we care what JB thinks? We went the road of his ass't. It didn't work. There is no doubt in my mind that jb's choice would be either Mike or Gerry. And I don't blame him one bit for that. That is why I don't care what he thinks.

Well said which is why I really don’t want to take chances on bringing back players from this year and hoping they just buy in with a new coach.

Kingz I’m ok with. He’s a grown man and will be 24 this time next year.

Even Sadiq on paper looks like exactly what we should want back but how much time is it going to take the new coach to get rid of the bad habits he has from Autry. Is it worth it hoping, I don’t know.

Kyle I wish but he’s done. The rest I don’t think I want back.

True but the benching thing only works well if someone who plays better team ball can come in and if the player sent to the bench isn’t a sulker who affects other players on the team. Coaches have to be mini psychologists now and find what motivates a player. What works for one kid often doesn’t for another. Another issue is who the player turns to when criticized or benched - whether the parent, friend etc support the coach’s decision or advocate the player to retaliate, brood or in this new college sport’s world urge them to leave.
True kids are different, however, today they’re getting paid if the want to continue getting big bags need to take direction and
Get better or move on. Want to be adults act like it. Old white guy out. Not little league any more.

JB needs to stay very far away from this coaching search. I’d send him on an all expenses paid trip to the Galápagos Islands for the next two months just to make sure he doesn’t interfere.
Send him to Australia, that should be far enough away, or Maybe a nice trip to Antarctica at one of the USA research facilities.

You are confirming my suspicions and this is what I fear. It explains how we got in this situation in the first place, exhaustive national search should have been 3 years ago. I've referred to them not as trustees but another term fwiw.

^Hodgson was on the Buffalo staff for this game.

The amount of blue in those stands…. This game and the game a month earlier against UConn at MSG in Dan Hurley first season can be looked back on as temperature check type games that Syracuse was going to lose its advantage to win the stylistic games. I felt like even after that, Boeheims ‘big’ wins during that season and after was largely against veteran coaches. He was losing to the up and comers bringing a modern style.

Hodgson is part of this young wave that can a) coach out of their minds but also b) adapt and thrive in the NIL era.

Cuse needs to get in front of this trend for once in their lives.

I don't think Hodgson would need $30M to field a competitive, top 4 ACC type of team.

That system + system fits, we could be really, really good with like a $5M NIL budget. Which feels more long term sustainable to me than hoping for crazy NIL donations to offset a coach with limited strategic acumen.

Me thinks about 150 pages of this thread is because there is concern that the BoT is making a decision based on who they know.
So, you are making your judgment on people you don't know based on 150 pages on a internet message board. Got it. Well, I do know some people on the BOT. They love Syracuse as much as you do. They want to win as much as you do. Maybe more. Does that mean they don't make mistakes? Of course not. All of us make mistakes. But the decisions that are upcoming will be made because of what they think is the right choice. I am not overly confidant that they will do the right things on the two positions we are waiting on. I don't know. But I don't question that the decision will be because of who they think is the right person for the job rather than just some person they like.
